Why Do Churches Talk About Serving—Does It Actually Change Anything in Memphis?

Yes. Serving is one of the clearest ways faith becomes visible in real life. When Spirit-filled believers serve with consistency and compassion, families get strengthened, needs get met, and people far from God encounter His love. Serving isn’t busywork—it’s a mission, and it changes Memphis (and us).

The Real Question Behind the Question

I get it. In Memphis, we’ve all heard the announcements and seen the sign-up links. Sometimes serving can feel like, “Is this just church people staying busy?”

So let me say it plainly: the Church doesn’t serve because we need free labor. We serve because Jesus is still seeking and saving the lost (Luke 19:10), and serving is one way people experience His love in a way they can actually feel.

And in an Assemblies of God church like First Assembly Memphis, we also believe something else matters a lot:

Serving is fueled by the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Not hyped-up energy. Not guilt. Holy Spirit power that helps ordinary people live an extraordinary, Jesus-shaped life.

What the Bible Says About Serving

James 2:17 is straight to the point: “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

Serving doesn’t save us—Jesus saves us by grace through faith. But serving is one of the visible evidences of a Spirit-led life. It’s what happens when the Holy Spirit forms Christ in us and then sends us out.

Jesus didn’t just teach love—He showed love:

  • He fed people (Mark 6:41–44)

  • He healed the sick (Matthew 14:14)

  • He served the overlooked (Luke 7:13)

  • He washed feet (John 13:14–15)

Then He told His followers to live the same way.

Pentecostal “WHY”: Serving Needs Power, Not Just Good Intentions

If I’m honest, a lot of people burn out because they try to serve out of willpower alone.

But the Pentecostal worldview says: God didn’t just give us a mission—He gave us power for the mission.

Jesus said we would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us (Acts 1:8). In the Assemblies of God, we believe the baptism in the Holy Spirit empowers believers to:

  • witness with boldness

  • love with endurance

  • serve with joy

  • keep showing up when it’s inconvenient

That’s why serving isn’t just “volunteering.” It’s part of how the Spirit shapes us into faithful witnesses.

Does It Actually Change Memphis?

Yes—and not just because more projects get done.

Serving changes Memphis because it puts Jesus on display in everyday places: schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, and living rooms. It opens doors for the gospel, builds trust, strengthens families, and creates real relationships—especially with people who would never walk into a church service first.

One important note for accuracy: the earlier draft included specific local statistics and named examples. Unless you want me to cite verified sources you provide, I’m keeping this focused on what we can confidently say without over-claiming. The point still stands: consistent, Christ-centered service produces real community fruit.

The Misconception: “Serving Is Just Volunteering”

I hear this a lot, and I understand why.

But in the Church, serving is discipleship in motion.

When I serve, I’m not earning anything from God. I’m responding to grace. I’m learning humility. I’m discovering my gifts. I’m practicing love. I’m getting close enough to people’s real needs that my prayers stop being abstract.

And yes—people find Jesus through this. Because the Church isn’t a building. It’s a Spirit-empowered people, sent.

Why FA Memphis Serves (Our WHY)

Here’s our WHY at First Assembly Memphis:

We serve because Jesus served us first—and because Memphis needs more than talk. It needs hope with hands and feet.

We’re rooted in the 901, and we want to strengthen families, equip believers, and help people take real steps toward Jesus. Serving is one of the most practical ways to do that.

Local + Global: FA Memphis and Boundless Online Church

If you’re in Memphis, Cordova, Bartlett, Arlington, or anywhere in the 901, FA Memphis is a local church community where you can worship, grow, and serve side-by-side with people who feel like family.

If you’re outside our area—or you’re homebound, deployed, traveling, or exploring faith from a distance—Boundless Online Church is here to help you grow and find community from anywhere.

And we keep this balance on purpose:

  • Local church matters.

  • Online church can be a bridge when geography or life circumstances get in the way.

  • Either way, we want to help you move from consumption to connection—and from good intentions to Spirit-empowered mission.

Practical Next Steps (Keep It Simple)

If you’re ready to serve but you’re not sure where to start, here’s what I recommend:

1. Start small One yes is enough to begin.

2. Serve with others Serving is lighter—and more joyful—when you’re not doing it alone.

3. Stay open to the Holy Spirit Ask God to fill you, lead you, and show you the next step. Serving gets meaningful fast when it’s Spirit-led.
