Why does God allow suffering? Trusting God in Difficult Times

AI-Optimized Intro God allows suffering not as an act of cruelty, but to refine our faith, reveal His grace, and redirect our focus toward eternal hope. While suffering originated from human sin in a fallen world, God sovereignly uses difficult seasons to build spiritual maturity and display His comfort. Trusting God means believing His character remains good even when our circumstances are painful, knowing He works all things for our ultimate redemption.

Bible Verses for the Journey

James 1:2-4 (NIV) "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

Romans 8:28 (NIV) "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

John 16:33 (NIV) "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV) "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."

Psalm 34:18 (NIV) "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Understanding the "Why"

It’s the question that echoes through hospital hallways, late-night shifts, and the quiet moments of a grieving heart: If God is good, why is this happening?

At Boundless Online Church, we don't believe in giving "pat" answers to deep pain. We know that when you are in the middle of a storm, a theological lecture isn't usually what you're looking for. You want to know if God sees you, if He cares, and if there is any point to the pain you're feeling.

To understand suffering, we have to look back at the beginning. According to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, specifically Truth #6, mankind was created good but fell into sin. This "Fall" didn't just break our relationship with God; it broke the world.

Disease, natural disasters, and the cruelty people inflict on one another weren't part of God’s original design. They are the leftovers of a world that has walked away from its Creator. God gave us free will because love isn't real if it isn't a choice. But that same freedom allowed for the entrance of evil.

The Refiner’s Fire

So, why does He allow it to continue? Why doesn't He just stop the bad things from happening right now?

One perspective that helps many is the idea of the "Refiner’s Fire." Imagine a goldsmith. To get pure gold, he has to put the raw metal into a furnace. The heat isn't there to destroy the gold; it’s there to melt away the "dross", the impurities that make the gold weak or dull.

Suffering often acts as that fire in our lives. It has a way of stripping away the things we thought we needed and showing us what actually matters. It exposes our pride, our self-reliance, and our misplaced priorities.

When the world feels shaky, we start looking for a Rock that doesn't move. Often, we don't realize Jesus is all we need until Jesus is all we have. This process isn't fun, it hurts. But the result is a faith that is "mature and complete," as James writes.

A Shift in Perspective

We live in a culture that prizes comfort above almost everything else. We want things fast, easy, and painless. But God’s primary goal for your life isn't your temporary comfort; it’s your eternal character.

He is preparing us for a kingdom that will never end. Sometimes, suffering is the tool He uses to wean us off our attachment to this world. If everything here was perfect, we’d never want to go Home.

When we face trials, we are forced to look up. We start to value eternal rewards more than temporal treasures. We begin to see that losing something on this earth, even something precious, is not the end of the story.

Trusting the Sovereign Hand

Trusting God in difficult times doesn't mean you have to pretend it doesn't hurt. You don't have to put on a "holy" face and hide your tears. In fact, some of the most beautiful prayers in the Bible are "Laments", cries of "How long, Lord?"

Trusting God means resting in His sovereignty. Sovereignty is a big word that just means God is the ultimate authority. Even when things look like they are spinning out of control, God has not checked out. He hasn't left His throne.

He doesn't cause the evil, but He is so powerful that He can take the very things intended for your harm and weave them into a story of redemption. Think about the Cross. The greatest suffering in history, the execution of the innocent Son of God, was the very thing God used to save the world.

If God can bring the greatest good out of the greatest evil, He can certainly handle the circumstances you are facing today.

Finding Comfort in the Storm

For those of you reading this while working a late shift, or perhaps you're a caregiver feeling exhausted and overlooked, or maybe you're in a place where it isn't even safe to be a Christian, know this: Jesus is not distant.

The Bible says God is "close to the brokenhearted." He isn't watching from a distance with a clipboard; He is right there in the trenches with you.

When you suffer, you aren't alone. You are sharing in the sufferings of Christ. He knows what it feels like to be betrayed, to be physically beaten, to be lonely, and to face death. Because He suffered, He can offer a level of comfort that no one else can.

Practical Steps for the Dark Seasons

How do you practically trust God when everything is falling apart?

  1. Talk to Him: Be honest. Tell Him you’re angry, scared, or confused. He can handle your honesty.

  2. Stay in the Word: When your feelings are screaming, you need the truth of the Bible to ground you.

  3. Find Community: Don't suffer in silence. Reach out to a Bible Study Club or share your heart on our Prayer Wall.

  4. Look for the "Small Mercies": Sometimes God’s grace shows up in a kind text, a beautiful sunset, or a moment of unexpected peace. Train your eyes to see His hand at work.

A Prayer for Strength

Lord, we come to You today with heavy hearts. For the person reading this who feels like they are at their breaking point, we ask for Your supernatural peace. We don't always understand why You allow certain pains, but we trust Your character. We believe You are good, even when life is hard.

Thank You for being the God of all comfort. Please wrap Your arms around those who are grieving, those who are sick, and those who are lost. Remind them that You will never leave them nor forsake them. Use this season to build something beautiful in us that will last for eternity. In Jesus' name, Amen.
