Why Does Serving Others Matter for My Spiritual Growth?

Tier 3 › Community-Minded Believers

Serving matters because Jesus uses it to grow me into a disciple and to reach people with His love. I’m not saved by serving, but because I’m saved, I serve. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, my service becomes a real witness—meeting practical needs and pointing Memphis (the 901) to Christ.

The Real Question Behind the Question

If I’m honest, the tension usually isn’t “Is serving good?” Most of us already believe it’s good.

The real question is: Why does it matter for me? Like—my spiritual growth, my joy, my walk with Jesus, my purpose.

Here’s what I’ve learned: serving isn’t a church’s way of getting stuff done. It’s one of God’s main tools for forming disciples. And it’s also one of the clearest ways we become the hands and feet of Jesus in Memphis.

What the Bible Says About Spiritual Growth and Serving

James 2:17 says it plainly: “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

That doesn’t mean we earn salvation by serving. We’re saved by grace through faith in Jesus alone.

But it does mean this: real faith grows legs. It becomes visible. It becomes practical. It becomes love in motion.

Jesus didn’t just teach—He served:

  • He fed people (Mark 6:41–44)

  • He healed the sick (Matthew 14:14)

  • He lifted up the overlooked (Luke 7:13)

  • He washed feet (John 13:14–15)

When I follow Jesus, I’m following a Servant-King. That changes what “spiritual growth” even looks like.

Pentecostal “WHY”: Serving Is Better With Holy Spirit Power

In an Assemblies of God church, we don’t just talk about doing good—we talk about being empowered.

Jesus said we would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us (Acts 1:8). And that power isn’t just for a church service moment—it’s for everyday life.

The Holy Spirit helps me:

  • love when I’m tired

  • stay humble when I want credit

  • keep showing up when it’s inconvenient

  • care about people I used to overlook

  • share Jesus with courage and compassion

That’s why serving is more than volunteering. It’s discipleship with power.

How Serving Impacts Memphis (901)

Serving shapes me—and it also blesses my city.

When Spirit-filled believers show up consistently in the 901, it brings:

  • practical help to real needs (meals, mentoring, encouragement, care)

  • strength for families who feel stretched thin

  • trust and relationship in neighborhoods

  • open doors for the gospel as people experience Jesus through His people

Memphis doesn’t just need opinions. Memphis needs people who will love like Jesus—up close.

The Misconception: “Serving Is Just Filling a Slot”

I get why people feel that way. Sometimes it’s been presented like a guilt-trip: “We need more volunteers.”

But biblically, serving is about formation:

Serving teaches me to live less self-centered, more Spirit-led, and more mission-minded.

It’s where my prayers get specific. It’s where my compassion grows. It’s where I learn to listen to the Holy Spirit in real time.

WHY This Matters at FA Memphis (and for Boundless)

At First Assembly Memphis, our WHY is simple: we want to help people take real steps toward Jesus—right here in Memphis and the 901—and we want to send believers out as Spirit-empowered witnesses.

And for anyone who isn’t local, Boundless Online Church exists because distance shouldn’t block discipleship. You can grow, find community, and live on mission from anywhere.

  • FA Memphis is for local connection in Memphis/Cordova and the 901.

  • Boundless Online Church is a bridge for those outside the area or unable to attend in person.

Practical Next Steps (Inspiring + Doable)

If you want to grow spiritually, here’s a simple plan:

1. Pick one place to serve for 90 days Long enough to grow roots. Short enough to be realistic.

2. Serve with a team Growth happens faster when you’re not doing life alone.

3. Pray before you serve A quick prayer changes everything: “Holy Spirit, fill me and lead me today.”

Why Serving Actually Changes Memphis (& You)

The Question: Does church service work actually make a difference, or is it just busy work?

The Short Answer: Yes. When Memphis churches serve strategically and consistently, measurable transformation happens: lower crime, stronger families, better student outcomes, restored hope in the 901.

What the Bible Says: "Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." – James 2:17 Serving isn't optional. It's how faith becomes love in action.

Real Memphis Impact:

  • 12 Cordova churches + Operation Backpack = 3,200 students served

  • 4 East Memphis churches united = 400 families fed (vs. 80-100 per church alone)

  • Brown Missionary Baptist gave $100,000+ to Memphis nonprofits (2020–2022)

  • Cities with church collaboration see 23% lower crime rates

  • Student achievement scores increase 18 points with church tutoring programs

3 Simple Steps to Start Serving:

  1. Start Small – Greet someone. Pray. Bring a meal.

  2. Find Your Fit – Try kids ministry, hospitality, community outreach, or prayer teams.

  3. Keep Showing Up – Consistency transforms you and your city.

The WHY Behind FA Memphis: We serve Memphis because Jesus served us first. Every person in the 901 deserves access to hope, healing, and belonging.

The WHY Behind Boundless Online Church: Distance shouldn't block mission. Online believers need a place to serve, grow, and make a difference where they live.
