Why Is Worship More Than Just a Sunday Song?

FA Memphis Series: so we can make sure we know that these are being posted to Boundless Online Church (www.boundlessonlinechurch.org) Boundless Online Church is an online outreach ministry of FA Memphis Church, here in Cordova, TN.

Worship is more than music on Sunday because it’s our whole-life response to who God is—heart, mind, body, and voice. In a Pentecostal worldview, worship is also a Spirit-led encounter where the Holy Spirit draws us to Jesus, changes us, and empowers us to live surrendered all week long.

Worship That Welcomes Everyone

Our Music and Creative Arts Ministry operates on a simple principle: no one stands, walks, or sits alone. Whether you've sung professionally for decades or you're picking up an instrument for the first time, we welcome your voice and your gifts.

Led by Music and Creative Arts Pastor Bob Geabhart, we pursue God's presence through both traditional and contemporary musical styles. This isn't about performance: it's about creating an atmosphere where the Holy Spirit moves and people encounter Jesus through music, drama, and creative arts.

The heart of our ministry beats with the truth of Psalm 100:2: "Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs." We take this command seriously, building a culture where worship becomes a lifestyle, not just a Sunday event.

In the Assemblies of God, we don’t treat worship like a warm-up for the sermon. We make room for a real encounter with God’s presence (John 4:23–24). Sometimes that looks like joyful songs; sometimes it looks like quiet surrender. Either way, we’re giving the Lord our “yes,” and inviting the Holy Spirit to lead.

Beyond Sunday Morning Services

We gather for worship at 10:30 AM on Sunday mornings and 6:30 PM on Wednesday evenings, but the Music and Arts Ministry extends throughout the year in diverse ways:

Seasonal Concerts & Productions : Pastor Geabhart directs and produces large-scale concerts throughout the year, including signature productions like A Concert of Christmas.

These events unite our congregation and the wider Memphis community in celebration and worship.

Multi-Generational Involvement : From elementary students to seasoned musicians, we create opportunities for participation at every life stage. Our affiliated First Assembly Christian School integrates choral programs for students from elementary through high school, studying music theory, history, and participating in co-curricular experiences including All West and All State Honor Choirs.

Drama & Creative Expression : Music isn't the only avenue for worship. We incorporate drama, visual arts, and multimedia presentations that communicate the gospel in fresh, compelling ways.

The Life Hack: Music as a Spiritual Anchor During Your Work Week

Here's a practical tool we've discovered that transforms ordinary moments into sacred ones: curate a "worship work playlist" that keeps your spirit aligned with God's presence throughout the week.

The hack works like this:

Monday Morning : Start your commute with the songs from last Sunday's service. This simple practice extends the worship experience and sets your mind on eternal things before the demands of the day begin.

Midweek Reset : Keep a worship playlist accessible on your phone or computer. When stress escalates or discouragement creeps in, take a five-minute break to listen and refocus. One song can recalibrate your entire perspective.

Friday Wind-Down : End your work week with intentional worship music. This creates a mental and spiritual transition from labor to rest, reminding you that your identity isn't defined by productivity but by God's love.

Weekend Preparation : Saturday evenings, preview the setlist for Sunday's service (when available). Familiarizing yourself with the songs beforehand deepens your Sunday worship experience.

This life hack works because music bypasses our rational defenses and speaks directly to our hearts. When we fill the mundane moments of our week with worship, we create consistent touchpoints with God's presence.

Real Stories from Our Ministry

We've witnessed firsthand how music ministry transforms lives:

The grandmother who hadn't sung publicly in forty years joined our choir and discovered renewed purpose in her retirement season. The teenager battling anxiety found peace through leading worship at youth services. The businessman who thought he had no musical gifts now runs our sound booth, realizing that technical excellence is also worship.

These stories illustrate a foundational truth: worship creates community. When we lift our voices together, barriers dissolve. Economic status, age differences, and past mistakes fade in the light of collective praise. You are seen, heard, and loved here: not for what you bring to the stage, but because you're part of God's family.

How to Get Involved

We welcome participation at every skill level. Here's how to connect with our Music and Arts Ministry:

Vocalists : Join our choir or worship team. We provide training and mentorship for developing singers alongside opportunities for experienced vocalists to lead.

Instrumentalists : Whether you play piano, guitar, drums, strings, or brass, we need your gifts. Our band rotates musicians and creates space for multiple styles and skill levels.

Technical Arts : Sound engineering, lighting design, and multimedia production are critical components of modern worship. We train volunteers in these specialized areas.

Drama & Dance : Expressive arts teams periodically present sketches, interpretive dance, and visual storytelling during services and special events.

Behind-the-Scenes Support : Music ministry requires coordination, planning, and administrative support. These "invisible" roles are equally valuable and vital to our success.

The Theology Behind the Music

We approach worship with theological intentionality. Music isn't mere entertainment or emotional manipulation: it's a biblical response to who God is and what He's done.

Throughout Scripture, God's people sing. Moses and Miriam sang after crossing the Red Sea. David's psalms became Israel's songbook. Paul and Silas sang in prison. The book of Revelation depicts eternal worship around God's throne.

But worship isn’t limited to singing. Scripture calls us to offer our whole selves to God: “present your bodies as a living sacrifice… this is your true and proper worship” (Romans 12:1). And as we worship, we ask for something more than a mood—we ask for the Holy Spirit to lead and to shape us into Christlikeness (2 Corinthians 3:17–18).

When we engage in worship, we participate in something cosmic and eternal. We join a chorus that spans generations and cultures—earth harmonizing with heaven.

This understanding elevates every rehearsal, every sound check, every note played. We're not just preparing for a service; we're preparing hearts (including our own) to encounter the living God.

The Wednesday Night Advantage

While Sunday morning showcases our full production capabilities, Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM offer a different worship atmosphere: often more intimate and participatory. These midweek services provide opportunities to try new songs, develop emerging leaders, and create space for spontaneous worship moments.

Many of our most meaningful worship experiences happen on Wednesday nights when schedules are lighter and hearts are hungry for God's presence in the middle of the week's chaos.

Building a Worship Culture at Home

The most important music ministry happens outside our building: in your home, car, and workplace. We equip families to build worship into daily rhythms:

Family Worship Nights : Designate one evening weekly for intentional worship together. Play instruments, sing favorite hymns and choruses, and pray together.

Musical Scripture Memory : Set Bible verses to simple melodies. Children (and adults) remember truths better when paired with music.

Testimony Through Playlists : Share worship playlists with friends, coworkers, and family members who need encouragement. Music opens doors for spiritual conversations.
