Your Phone is a Sanctuary

Updated: Feb 9

I'll be honest with you, when I look around a coffee shop or sit in an airport terminal, I see the same thing: heads down, fingers scrolling, everyone lost in their phones. And for years, the church world (myself included) has treated this like it's the enemy of faith. We've said things like, "Put your phone away and pray," or "You can't worship God through a screen."

But what if we've been looking at this all wrong?

What if the very device we carry in our pockets, the one that's always with us, always on, always ready, could become one of the most powerful tools for prayer, connection, and spiritual growth we've ever had?

Rethinking What "Sanctuary" Means

When we hear the word "sanctuary," most of us picture stained glass, wooden pews, and organ music. We think of a physical building where we go to meet God. And listen, I love those spaces. I pastor at First Assembly Memphis, and there's something irreplaceable about gathering together in person.

But here's the thing: sanctuary has always been about more than a building. Historically, sanctuary meant a place of safety, refuge, and protection. It was where you could go when the world felt too heavy. It was where you were safe, seen, and loved.

Your phone can be that place.

Not because the device itself is sacred, but because it gives you immediate access to the presence of God and the family of God no matter where you are. It's a portal to prayer, worship, Scripture, and community that fits in your palm.

When You Can't Get to Church

Maybe you're a nurse working the overnight shift. Maybe you're stuck at home caring for an elderly parent. Maybe you're traveling for work, sitting in a hotel room in a city where you don't know a soul. Maybe you're just curious about Jesus but not quite ready to walk through the doors of a physical church building.

You are never forgotten. You are never alone. You are deeply loved by God.

And your phone can remind you of that truth every single day.

Turning Your Phone Into a Sacred Space

Here's how I've started thinking about my phone as a sanctuary, and I want to share some practical ways you can do the same:

1. Protect Your Peace

Just like a sanctuary is a place of refuge, your phone should protect your spiritual and mental well-being. That means being intentional about what you allow in. Use tools like Bark for online safety and Covenant Eyes for accountability. If you're streaming content, use VidAngel or "Enjoy Movies Your Way" to filter what you watch.

Your phone isn't just a tool, it's a space you control. You get to decide what enters your eyes, your mind, and your heart.

2. Start Your Day With God

Set your morning alarm to open a Bible app or a worship playlist instead of social media. I'm not saying you have to be a morning person (trust me, I get it), but even five minutes with Scripture before the chaos starts can completely reset your day.

At Boundless, we're building resources specifically for these "micro-moments", short devotionals, prayer prompts, and encouragement that meet you right where you are, even if that's in bed with your coffee.

3. Pray Anytime, Anywhere

You don't need a quiet room or a formal posture to talk to God. You can pray while you're waiting in line at the grocery store. You can pray in a hospital waiting room. You can pray at your desk between meetings.

And if you need prayer support, Boundless offers 24/7 live chat and video ministry. Real pastors and team members are available around the clock to pray with you, encourage you, and walk through whatever you're facing. You're never alone.

4. Join a Community That Travels With You

One of the most powerful things about digital church is that your community goes wherever you go. Through Boundless, you can join Bible study groups, small groups, prayer teams, and training sessions, all from your phone.

We also have live translation so language is never a barrier. Whether you're in Memphis or Manila, you're part of a global family that prays together, grows together, and supports each other.

5. Worship Without Walls

Some of the most powerful moments of worship I've experienced haven't been in a building, they've been in the quiet of my car, the stillness of an early morning, or even the noise of a crowded airport terminal with earbuds in.

Your phone gives you access to worship music, sermons, podcasts, and teaching whenever you need it. You can turn a commute into a time of praise. You can turn a sleepless night into a conversation with God.

A Biblical Affirmation for You

Here's a truth I want you to carry with you today:

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul." , Psalm 23:1-3

God doesn't need you to be in a specific building to restore your soul. He meets you wherever you are. And sometimes, that means He meets you through the screen in your hand.

You're Not Replacing Church, You're Extending It

Let me be clear: I'm not saying you should skip church altogether and just stay home with your phone. Physical, in-person community is irreplaceable. But for so many people, whether because of work schedules, health challenges, anxiety, or geographic isolation, getting to a building every Sunday just isn't possible.

That doesn't mean you should go without.

At Boundless, we believe church should come to you when you can't get to it. And when you're ready to explore a physical church home, we'll help you find one. Use our ZIP code or country search to locate a healthy, welcoming church near you, and we'll even offer a VIP handoff to make sure you're warmly welcomed.

We're not here to compete with local churches, we're here to support them and to make sure no one falls through the cracks.

Your Phone, Your Sanctuary

So the next time you pick up your phone, I want you to see it differently. It's not just a device. It's not just a distraction.

It's a doorway to the presence of God. It's a connection to a global family.

It's a reminder that you are never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved.

Your phone is a sanctuary, a place of safety, refuge, and hope. Use it well. Use it intentionally. And let it draw you closer to the heart of God.
