AG Truth Deep Dive: Understanding Sanctification

If you have been around church for a while, you might have heard the word "sanctification" thrown around in sermons or Bible studies. It sounds like one of those heavy, academic words that belong in a dusty textbook. But at its heart, sanctification is one of the most beautiful and practical parts of the Christian walk.

In our series, the AG Truth Deep Dive, we are looking at the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. These aren't just rules; they are the bedrock of what we believe. Today, we are focusing on Truth #9: Sanctification.

Whether you are a late-shift worker catching this on your break, someone navigating a disability, or a seeker looking for hope in an unsafe part of the world, this truth is for you. Sanctification is God’s way of saying, "I’m not just saving you from your past; I’m inviting you into a brand-new kind of future."

What Does "Sanctify" Actually Mean?

At its simplest level, to sanctify something means to "set it apart" for a special purpose.

Think about it like this: You might have a pair of old, beat-up sneakers you use for mowing the lawn or working in the garden. But then, you have that one pair of shoes you keep clean for special occasions. Those special shoes are "set apart." They have a specific purpose.

In a much deeper, spiritual way, God does this with us. When we follow Jesus, we are set apart from sin and the world’s way of doing things, and we are dedicated to God. We are no longer just "common" or "ordinary"; we are His.

It’s a Process, Not Just a Moment

The Assemblies of God teaches that sanctification is both an act and a process. It isn't something that happens once and then you're done. It has a beginning, a middle, and a glorious end.

Theologians often break this down into three phases. Understanding these helps take the pressure off. If you’ve ever felt like you aren't "holy enough" or that you’re failing at being a Christian, these three phases will give you a lot of peace.

1. The Start: You Are Already Holy (Definitive Sanctification)

This is the "past" part of the process. The moment you put your trust in Jesus, something radical happens. You are "justified": which is a fancy way of saying God declares you righteous because of what Jesus did on the cross.

In that same moment, you are also sanctified. You are immediately set apart for God. You don't have to earn this. You don't have to go through a 12-step program to reach it. It is a gift.

Because of Jesus, God looks at you and sees holiness. Even if you don't feel holy, and even if you still struggle with old habits, your position before God has changed. You are His child, and you belong to Him. This is the foundation for everything else.

2. The Middle: Growing Every Day (Progressive Sanctification)

This is where most of us live our daily lives. This is the "present" part of the journey.

While we are positionally holy because of Jesus, we are also progressively becoming more like Him in our character. Progressive sanctification is the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It’s the process of the Holy Spirit helping us change our thoughts, our words, and our actions to match who we already are in Christ.

It’s like a seed that has been planted. The moment it’s in the ground, it is "a plant." But it still has a lot of growing to do before it looks like the tree it’s meant to be.

This phase requires our cooperation. We don’t do it by our own willpower: that would be exhausting and impossible: but we do it by yielding to the Holy Spirit. We read the Word, we pray, and we listen when the Spirit nudges our hearts to be more kind, more patient, or more honest.

3. The Finish: The Goal (Glorification)

The final phase of sanctification happens when we see Jesus face-to-face. This is our future hope.

In this life, we will always struggle with the "presence" of sin. We might get better at resisting it, but it’s still there in the world and in our human nature. But one day, when Christ returns or when we go to be with Him, we will be completely and totally separated from the very existence of sin.

We will be like Him because we will see Him as He is. That is the "finish line" of sanctification.

How Does This Work in Real Life?

If you are a caregiver for a family member, or if you are living in a place where it’s dangerous to even mention the name of Jesus, you might wonder: How does this theology help me on a Tuesday afternoon?

Sanctification is about the power of the Holy Spirit changing your "want-to."

Without the Spirit, we try to be "good people" to impress God or others. That leads to burnout. But through sanctification, the Holy Spirit begins to change our hearts from the inside out.

  • In your relationships: You find yourself being able to forgive someone who doesn't deserve it, not because you are a "better person," but because the Spirit is working in you.

  • In your work: Whether you are cleaning an office at 3:00 AM or managing a team, you realize your work is "set apart." You are doing it for God, and that gives your daily grind incredible dignity.

  • In your struggles: When you face a recurring temptation or a habit that is hard to break, sanctification reminds you that you aren't fighting alone. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, helping you "reckon yourself dead to sin."

The Role of the Holy Spirit

We cannot talk about sanctification without talking about the Holy Spirit. In the Assemblies of God, we believe deeply in the Spirit-empowered life.

Sanctification isn't a "self-help" project. You can't scrub your own soul clean. It is the Holy Spirit who does the heavy lifting. Our job is to stay connected to the vine: to stay close to Jesus.

As we spend time in His presence, we naturally start to pick up His "scent." We start to think like He thinks. We start to love what He loves. This is why we encourage people to join us for worship and Bible study: not to check a box, but to put ourselves in a position where the Spirit can work on our hearts.

Sanctification and the 16 Truths

Truth #9 is a bridge. It connects the truth of our salvation (Truth #4) to the truth of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Truth #7). Salvation sets us on the path, the Spirit empowers us, and sanctification is the journey itself.

A Note for the Weary

If you feel like you aren't making progress, don't lose heart. Sanctification is rarely a straight line upward. It looks more like a staircase with some landings and maybe a few stumbles along the way.

The important thing is that you are in the hands of the Master Potter. He is patient. He knows your frame and He knows your circumstances. Whether you are isolated because of health or living in a place where you feel spiritually alone, God is working in you right where you are.

He has set you apart. You are His treasure. And He is faithful to complete the work He started in you.
