Bible Study: AG 101: What Does the Assemblies of God Believe About the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

Trying to live the Christian life without the power of the Holy Spirit is like trying to drive a car with a beautiful engine but an empty gas tank, it looks great on the outside, but you aren’t going anywhere.

What does the Assemblies of God believe about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? The Assemblies of God teaches that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience following salvation that empowers believers for Christian witness and service. This experience is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking in other tongues, as described in the Book of Acts.

The "Something More" Experience

If you’ve spent any time in a Pentecostal church like First Assembly Memphis, you’ve probably heard the term "Spirit-filled" or "Baptism in the Holy Spirit." For many, these terms can feel a little mysterious or even intimidating. But at its heart, this doctrine is about one simple thing: Power.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus told His followers, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

The Assemblies of God (AG) believes that this promise wasn’t just for the early church in the first century; it’s a gift available to every believer today. Whether you are joining us in person in the 901 or connecting through Boundless Online Church, understanding this "extra tank of fuel" is vital for your walk with Christ.

Why Do We Believe This? (The Biblical Pattern)

The AG doctrine of Spirit Baptism isn't based on a single verse, but on a consistent pattern found throughout the New Testament, specifically in the Book of Acts. We see people receive Christ (salvation) and then, in a separate moment, receive this "filling" or "baptism."

Biblical Event

Scripture

What Happened?

The Day of Pentecost

Acts 2:1-4

The 120 disciples were filled and spoke in tongues.

The Samaritans

Acts 8:14-17

They were already saved but received the Spirit later.

Cornelius’ Household

Acts 10:44-46

They received the Spirit and spoke in tongues.

The Ephesians

Acts 19:1-6

Paul laid hands on them; they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

When you look at these accounts, there is a recurring theme: people were filled with the Spirit, and there was a noticeable, observable sign that it had happened.

What Is the "Initial Physical Evidence"?

One of the most distinctive beliefs of the Assemblies of God is the doctrine of Initial Physical Evidence. This simply means that when someone is baptized in the Holy Spirit, the first outward sign is speaking in other tongues (languages they haven't learned).

Why is this emphasized? It’s not because tongues are the "goal" of the Christian life. The goal is always Jesus. However, the AG teaches that tongues serve as a physical confirmation to the believer that they have received the promise. It’s like the ring in a marriage, the ring isn't the marriage itself, but it is the visible sign that a covenant has been made.

It’s important to distinguish this from the gift of tongues mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12. While they are the same in essence, the "initial evidence" is for every believer receiving the baptism, whereas the "gift of tongues" is a specific role used in a public church service that requires an interpretation.

Key Definitions for the Journey

To help clarify some of the terms we use at First Assembly Memphis, here are a few quick definitions:

  • Salvation: The act of God’s grace where a person repents of their sin and trusts in Jesus Christ for eternal life.

  • Baptism in the Holy Spirit: An experience following salvation where the believer is "immersed" in the Spirit for the purpose of power for service.

  • Initial Physical Evidence: The first observable sign (speaking in tongues) that accompanies Spirit Baptism.

  • Sanctification: The lifelong process of being made more like Jesus in our character and actions.

  • Pentecostal: A term referring to churches that believe the experiences of the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) are still active today.

The Purpose: Empowerment for a Broken World

We don't seek the Baptism in the Holy Spirit just to have a "spiritual experience." We seek it because the world is hard, and our mission is big.

When you are filled with the Spirit, you receive:

  1. Boldness to Witness: You find a new courage to share your faith with neighbors in Cordova, Bartlett, or wherever you live.

  2. A Deepened Prayer Life: The Spirit helps us pray even when we don't have the words (Romans 8:26).

  3. Power Over Sin: While we aren't perfect, the Spirit gives us the strength to live a life that honors God.

  4. Spiritual Gifts: Spirit Baptism often opens the door to other gifts like healing, prophecy, and wisdom.

How Do I Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

If you find yourself longing for more of God's presence and power, know that this gift is for you. It isn't reserved for "super-Christians" or pastors.

Here is how you can seek this experience:

  • Ask: Jesus said, "If you then... know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13).

  • Believe: Approach God with faith, knowing that He wants to empower you.

  • Wait and Worship: Many people receive the Spirit during times of intense worship or quiet prayer. You don't have to "work it up", you just have to "soak it in."

  • Surrender: Let go of the need to control the moment. Allow the Holy Spirit to move however He chooses.

At First Assembly Memphis, we regularly pray for people to receive this gift during our services. Whether you are a long-time member or you’re brand new to our church, we would love to walk with you through this.

A Life-Changing Takeaway

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't about being "better" than other Christians. It’s about being "better equipped" to serve the King. It’s a gift of grace designed to help you navigate the stresses of life in the 901 with a peace and power that doesn't come from yourself.

If you’ve been feeling spiritually exhausted or like your faith has become a "checklist" of rules, perhaps what you need isn't more effort, but more of the Spirit's power.
