Bible Study for Beginners: Where to Start Your Journey with God

Starting a Bible study journey can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. By beginning with the Gospels, specifically the Book of John, you can focus on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. This guide provides a simple framework for beginners to engage with Scripture, build a daily habit, and grow in faith through practical tools like the OIA method. Start your spiritual growth today with clear, manageable steps.

Essential Bible Verses for Your Journey

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." : Psalm 119:105

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." : 2 Timothy 3:16-17

"Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." : Joshua 1:8

"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." : Hebrews 4:12

Getting Started with Bible Study

Welcome to the start of something beautiful. If you’ve ever picked up a Bible, looked at its hundreds of pages, and wondered, "Where on earth do I begin?": you are not alone.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that the Bible isn't just an ancient history book; it’s a living invitation to know the Creator of the universe. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and the most consistent way to do that is through regular time in God’s Word.

Whether you are a shift worker looking for peace at 3:00 AM, a caregiver needing strength in the middle of the day, or a seeker just curious about who Jesus is, this guide is for you.

Why We Study the Bible

Before we talk about how to study, we need to understand why. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we hold to 16 Fundamental Truths, the first of which is that the Bible is the inspired, infallible rule of faith and conduct.

This means the Bible is our compass. It tells us who God is, how much He loves us, and how we can live a life full of purpose. Studying the Bible is how we hear God's voice. It’s how we find hope when things get tough and wisdom when we have big decisions to make.

Where Should a Beginner Start?

The Bible is a library of 66 books, so it’s natural to feel lost. While it’s tempting to start on page one (Genesis), many beginners find themselves getting bogged down in the complex laws and genealogies of the Old Testament.

Start with the Gospel of John.

The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) tell the story of Jesus. John’s Gospel is particularly welcoming for beginners because it focuses heavily on the identity of Jesus and His heart for people. It’s simple, poetic, and direct.

After you finish John, consider moving into:

  1. The Book of Acts: To see how the early church began and how the Holy Spirit empowers believers.

  2. Philippians: A short book about finding joy in every circumstance.

  3. The Psalms: For when you need words for your prayers and emotions.

Choosing Your Tools

You don't need a degree in theology to understand God’s Word, but a few simple tools can make the journey smoother.

1. A Readable Translation Don't feel like you have to struggle with "thees" and "thous" if that isn't how you speak. For beginners, we recommend the New International Version (NIV), the English Standard Version (ESV), or the New Living Translation (NLT). These balance accuracy with modern, easy-to-read language.

2. A Study Bible A good study Bible includes notes at the bottom of the page that explain cultural context and difficult verses. This is like having a pastor sitting next to you while you read.

3. A Notebook and Pen Writing things down helps your brain process what you're reading. It also creates a record of your journey with God that you can look back on later.

The OIA Method: A Simple Way to Read

If you’re not sure what to do once you open the book, try the OIA Method. It’s a classic, straightforward way to engage with any passage.

Observation: What does it say? Read the passage slowly. Maybe read it twice. Look for repeated words, names of people, and the setting. Ask yourself the "5 Ws": Who is involved? What is happening? Where are they? When is this taking place? Why is this being said?

Interpretation: What does it mean? Try to understand the original author's intent. What was the "big idea" they wanted the readers to grasp? This is where study notes or Sunday Sermons can be very helpful. Be careful not to make the text mean something it clearly doesn't; look for the universal truths.

Application: What does it mean for me? This is the most important part. The Bible is meant to transform us, not just inform us. Ask: "Is there a command to obey? A promise to claim? A sin to avoid? An example to follow?" How does this passage change how you will treat your family, your coworkers, or yourself today?

Building a Consistent Habit

Consistency is better than intensity. Reading for 10 minutes every day is more impactful than reading for two hours once a month.

  • Pick a Time: Link it to an existing habit. Read while you have your morning coffee, during your lunch break, or right before bed.

  • Pick a Place: Find a quiet corner where you feel comfortable.

  • Don't Give Up: If you miss a day, don't let guilt stop you. Just pick up where you left off the next day. God’s grace is new every morning!

Join the Community

You don't have to study alone. In fact, you shouldn't! Growing in faith happens best in community. At Boundless Online Church, we offer several ways to connect with others who are on the same journey.

Check out our Clarion Call Bible Study or join our Bible Study Club to discuss what you're learning. If you're looking for a group specifically for men, we have a private group for that too.

Facing the Difficult Parts

You will eventually run into a verse that confuses you or even upsets you. That’s okay! The Bible is deep and complex. When you hit a "hard" spot:

  • Keep reading. Sometimes the context of the next chapter clears things up.

  • Ask for help. Use our I'm New Q&A Center to post questions.

  • Pray about it. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom.

Remember, the goal isn't to master the Bible, but to let the Bible: and the God who wrote it: master your heart.

A Prayer for Your Journey

"Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Word. I ask that as I begin this journey, You would open my eyes to see wonderful things in Your teachings. Help me to not just read the words, but to encounter You through them. Give me the hunger to seek You daily and the strength to live out what I learn. I want to know Jesus more. Guide my steps and light my path. In Jesus' name, Amen."
