Bible Study: Is the Bible Reliable? What the Evidence Actually Says

The Bible is the most historically reliable document of the ancient world. Its reliability is established through overwhelming manuscript evidence (over 24,000 New Testament copies), significant archaeological discoveries confirming biblical locations and figures, and the fulfillment of hundreds of specific prophecies that were recorded centuries before the events occurred. Trust in Scripture is based on informed evidence, not blind faith.

This article explores the historical, archaeological, and prophetic evidence that supports the reliability of the Bible, providing a foundation for those wrestling with doubt or seeking deeper clarity on the Word of God.

The Question of Trust in a Skeptical Age

In the noise of 2026, skepticism toward ancient texts is at an all-time high. You might find yourself scrolling through social media or listening to a podcast where someone claims the Bible is just a collection of myths or a "game of telephone" played over centuries. When these questions arise, they can feel unsettling. If we cannot trust the record of the Bible, how can we trust the promises within it? Is our faith built on a solid foundation, or is it merely a beautiful story passed down through the generations?

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that God is not afraid of your questions. In fact, Christianity is a faith rooted in history. It is a faith that invites scrutiny. When we look at what the evidence actually says, we find that the Bible doesn't ask for a blind leap into the dark; it offers a step into the light of historical reality. As you explore the evidence for the reliability of Scripture, remember the words of Isaiah 40:8: "The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever."

The Manuscript Evidence: The Bibliographic Test

One of the primary ways historians determine the reliability of any ancient text is the "Bibliographic Test." This test looks at two factors: the number of copies (manuscripts) available and the time gap between when the original was written and the earliest surviving copy. If the Bible is compared to other famous works of antiquity, the results are staggering.

Take Homer’s Iliad, for example. It is widely considered one of the most well-preserved ancient texts. There are fewer than 2,000 surviving manuscripts. The time gap between the original writing and the earliest copy is about 400 years. Compare this to the New Testament. We have over 5,800 Greek manuscripts and more than 24,000 total manuscripts in various languages (Latin, Syriac, Coptic). More importantly, some fragments of the New Testament date back to within 50 to 100 years of the original writing.

Because we have so many manuscripts from different geographical locations, textual critics can compare them to see if the message was changed. What they find is a 99.5% consistency across the manuscripts. The minor differences that do exist are primarily related to spelling or word order and do not affect a single major Christian doctrine. If someone rejects the reliability of the Bible based on its transmission, they would also have to reject every other work of ancient history, as the Bible is the most well-attested document in existence.

Archaeology: Stones That Cry Out

For decades, many critics claimed that major parts of the Bible were fictional because there was no archaeological evidence for them. However, one discovery after another has silenced these objections. Archaeology cannot "prove" a miracle, but it can: and does: verify the historical and geographical setting of the biblical narrative.

A famous example is King David. For a long time, many scholars believed David was a legendary figure, similar to King Arthur. But in 1993, archaeologists discovered the "Tel Dan Stele" in northern Israel. This 9th-century BC inscription explicitly mentions the "House of David." Similarly, the "Pilate Stone," discovered in 1961, provided the first archaeological evidence for the existence of Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect who presided over the trial of Jesus. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 was perhaps the most significant find of all. These scrolls contained portions of every book in the Old Testament (except Esther) and dated back to the 2nd century BC. When scholars compared these scrolls to the Masoretic text (the Hebrew Bible we had before 1947), they found that the text had remained virtually unchanged for over 1,000 years. This confirms that the scribes were incredibly meticulous in preserving the Word of God.

The Miracle of Internal Consistency

Consider the logistical reality of the Bible’s composition. It was written over a span of 1,500 years by more than 40 different authors. These authors included kings, peasants, doctors, fishermen, and poets. They wrote on three different continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe) and in three different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek). They addressed hundreds of controversial topics, from the nature of God to the purpose of human suffering.

In any other context, this would lead to a chaotic, contradictory mess. Yet, from Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells one unified story: God’s creation of humanity, our fall into sin, and His plan to rescue and restore us through Jesus Christ. This internal harmony points to a "Divine Editor" who guided the hearts and pens of the authors. Fulfilled Prophecy: The Fingerprint of God

The Bible is unique among religious texts because it contains hundreds of specific prophecies that were fulfilled centuries later. This is particularly evident in the life of Jesus. The Old Testament predicted where He would be born (Micah 5:2), how He would die (Psalm 22, Isaiah 53), and that He would rise again (Psalm 16:10). These prophecies were translated into Greek (the Septuagint) and widely circulated at least 200 years before Jesus was even born, proving they were not written after the fact.

The statistical probability of one person fulfilling even eight of these prophecies by chance is 1 in 10 to the 17th power (that’s 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000). To fulfill over 300 prophecies is mathematically impossible without divine intervention. This evidence shows that the Bible is not just a human book; it is a supernatural message delivered through human agents. The Eyewitness Testimony

The New Testament writers were either eyewitnesses to the events they described or interviewed those who were. Peter wrote, "For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty" (2 Peter 1:16). They wrote their accounts while the people who had witnessed the events were still alive and could have easily refuted any false claims.

Furthermore, many of these writers were willing to die for what they claimed to have seen. While many people will die for a lie they believe to be true, no one willingly dies for a lie they know is a lie. The fact that the apostles faced horrific deaths: ranging from crucifixion to beheading: because they refused to recant their testimony of the resurrected Jesus is a powerful proof of their sincerity and the truth of their message.

A Prayer for the Searcher

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You have not left us in the dark. We thank You for giving us a Word that is true, reliable, and grounded in history. For the one reading this who is wrestling with doubt, we ask for Your peace. Let them feel Your presence as they search for truth. Open their eyes to the evidence, but more importantly, open their heart to the Person at the center of the story: Jesus Christ. Strengthen our trust in Your promises and lead us into a deeper relationship with You today. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who wrote the Bible? The Bible was written by over 40 different authors over 1,500 years. These authors were divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16), meaning God guided their thoughts and words while still allowing their unique personalities and styles to shine through.

Has the Bible been changed over time? No. Thanks to the massive number of ancient manuscripts and the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, we can verify that the Bible we read today is 99.5% identical to the original writings. The tiny variations are minor and do not change any Christian teachings.

What about contradictions in the Bible? Most alleged contradictions are actually "perspectival differences." Just as four people witnessing a car accident will highlight different details, the Gospel writers often chose to emphasize different aspects of Jesus’ ministry. When studied in context and with an understanding of ancient literary styles, these differences actually support the authenticity of the accounts.

Is the Old Testament still relevant? Absolutely. The Old Testament provides the foundation for understanding who God is, why we need a Savior, and the prophecies that Jesus fulfilled. It is the "first act" of the story that makes the "second act" (the New Testament) meaningful.

How should I start reading the Bible if I’m a skeptic? We recommend starting with the Gospel of John or the Gospel of Luke. These books provide a clear eyewitness account of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Ask God to speak to you as you read, and look at the evidence with an open mind.
