Bible Study: What Is the Resurrection of Jesus and Why Does It Define Your Faith?

The resurrection of Jesus is the historical, bodily rising of Christ from the dead on the third day. It defines the Christian faith by proving Jesus is the Son of God, confirming His victory over death, and guaranteeing justification and eternal life for all who believe.

If the cross was the payment for our debt, the resurrection was the receipt that proved the debt was paid in full. Without the empty tomb, the Christian faith is just another set of good moral teachings, but with it, everything changes.

Why the Resurrection is the "Linchpin" of Faith

Christianity does not rest on a philosophy or a feeling; it rests on an event. In 1 Corinthians 15:14, the Apostle Paul makes a startling claim: "If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith." The resurrection is the non-negotiable foundation of everything we believe. It is the moment God intervened in human history to reverse the curse of death and open the way for us to return to Him.

Whether you are a new believer in the 901 area or a seeker joining us globally via Boundless Online Church, understanding the resurrection is the key to understanding your identity in Christ.

Key Definitions: Understanding the Language of Life

Before we dive into the evidence, let’s define the terms that describe this miracle.

Term

Biblical Definition

Resurrection

The literal, physical rising of Jesus Christ from the dead after being buried for three days.

Justification

The judicial act of God where He declares a sinner righteous based on Christ’s finished work on the cross.

Victory over Death

The breaking of the power of sin and the grave, ensuring that death is no longer the end for those in Christ.

The Biblical Evidence: Four Accounts, One Reality

The New Testament provides multiple eyewitness accounts of the risen Jesus. While each Gospel writer highlights different details, they all agree on the core facts: the tomb was empty, and Jesus appeared to His followers.

He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. - Matthew 28:6

Gospel Comparison Table: The Resurrection Morning

Aspect

Matthew 28

Mark 16

Luke 24

John 20-21

The Messengers

An angel at the tomb.

A young man in a white robe.

Two men in dazzling clothes.

Two angels inside the tomb.

The Message

"He is not here; he has risen."

"He has risen! He is not here."

"Why do you look for the living among the dead?"

Jesus Himself speaks to Mary Magdalene.

The Response

Fear and great joy; they ran to tell.

Trembling and bewildered.

They told the Eleven and all the others.

Peter and John ran to the tomb to see.

The Appearance

Jesus meets the women on their way.

Jesus appears to Mary and the disciples.

The road to Emmaus encounter.

Jesus appears to Mary and then the disciples in the room.

This convergence of testimony proves that the resurrection was not a private vision or a metaphor; it was a public, physical reality witnessed by hundreds of people (1 Corinthians 15:6).

The Theological Significance: Why Does It Matter?

Why couldn't Jesus have just died for our sins and stayed in the grave? Why was the rising necessary?

1. It Proves Jesus' Identity

Jesus claimed to be the Son of God. He claimed to have the power to lay His life down and take it up again. If He stayed in the grave, He would have been a liar or a lunatic. By rising, God the Father put His stamp of approval on Jesus, vindicating His identity as the Messiah.

2. It Secures Our Justification

The Bible says Jesus was "raised for our justification" (Romans 4:25). This means the resurrection is the proof that Jesus’ sacrifice was accepted by God. When you put your faith in Jesus, God looks at you and sees the righteousness of Christ. The resurrection is the guarantee that your sins are truly forgiven.

Justification: Being made right with God through the risen Christ.

3. It Is the Victory Over Death

Death is the "last enemy" (1 Corinthians 15:26). Because Jesus broke the power of death, we no longer have to live in fear of the grave. The resurrection of Jesus is the "firstfruits", the promise that just as He was raised, we will also be raised to eternal life.

Practical Application: Living the Resurrection Life

The resurrection isn't just a historical fact to believe; it is a power to be experienced today.

  • Hope in Hardship: Because the tomb is empty, no situation in your life is too dead for God to bring back to life. Whether it’s a broken relationship, a lost job, or a struggle with health, we serve the God of the resurrection.

  • Freedom from Shame: If Jesus is alive, your past is truly dead. You are not defined by your mistakes, but by the new life Christ has given you.

  • Boldness in Mission: The disciples went from hiding in fear to boldly preaching in the streets of Jerusalem. Why? Because they knew death had been defeated. We can live with that same courage in Memphis and beyond.

Victory over Death: Our ultimate hope in Jesus.
