The Eternal Word: Who Is Jesus in John 1?
To truly understand Jesus, we must look before the manger in Bethlehem, before the foundation of the earth, into eternity past. The Gospel of John opens with a breathtaking declaration of Christ’s divine nature:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:1–3)
In this passage, John identifies Jesus as the Logos, the eternal Word of God. Notice three crucial truths established right at the start of Scripture:
Jesus is eternal: He did not begin His existence when He was born in Bethlehem. He existed "in the beginning," sharing eternity with the Father.
Jesus is distinct yet divine: He was "with God" in intimate, personal fellowship, and simultaneously He "was God," possessing the fullness of divine nature.
Jesus is the Creator: Every star, every ocean, every breath you take, and every molecule in the universe was spoken into existence through Him.
When John later writes, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14), he announces the miraculous reality of the incarnation. Fully God and Fully Human: The Mystery and Majesty of the Incarnation
Orthodox Christian theology, rooted firmly in Scripture and upheld by historic Christian creeds, affirms that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human in one unified person. He is not fifty percent God and fifty percent man; nor is He a created being or an exalted prophet. He is the God-Man.

He had to be truly human so that He could truly represent us, walk in our shoes, experience our temptations, and substitute Himself in our place under the penalty of sin.
He had to be truly God so that His life and sacrifice possessed infinite worth, capable of bearing the sins of the entire world and conquering death forever.

The "I AM" Statements of Jesus: Claiming Divinity
In the Gospel of John, Jesus explicitly claims His divine identity through seven powerful "I AM" statements, echoing God's revelation to Moses at the burning bush ("I AM WHO I AM"). These declarations reveal not only who He is in His essence, but what He provides for our thirsty souls:
"I am the bread of life" (John 6:35) , He alone satisfies the deepest spiritual hunger of the human heart.

Why Did Jesus Have to Die? The Cross and Resurrection
A common question asked by seekers is: Why did Jesus have to die on a cross? Couldn’t God just forgive everyone without a sacrifice?
To understand the cross, we must understand the holiness of God and the reality of sin. Sin is our rebellion against our Creator, our choice to live independently of God, hurting ourselves, others, and breaking our relationship with the source of life. Because God is perfectly just, moral evil and sin cannot simply be swept under the rug. Justice requires a payment.
Instead of demanding that we pay the ultimate penalty for our rebellion, God in His infinite mercy sent His Son to pay it for us. Romans 5:8 declares: “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
On the cross, Jesus bore the weight of human sin, absorbing the wrath and judgment we deserved. He cried out, “It is finished!” (John 19:30), meaning the debt was fully paid in full. Three days later, God proved that the sacrifice was accepted by raising Jesus physically from the dead. The empty tomb is the cornerstone of our faith. Because He lives, we too can live new lives today and forever.
How Can I Know Jesus Personally Today?
Knowing Jesus is not about performing religious rituals, ticking off moral boxes, or joining an exclusive club. It is a living, breathing, personal relationship with a Savior who loves you unconditionally. Jesus is standing at the door of your heart, knocking (Revelation 3:20).
