Jesus of Nazareth is the eternal Son of God, fully divine and fully human, who entered human history, lived a sinless life, died on a cross for the sins of the world, and bodily rose from the dead. He is the unique Savior of humanity, offering forgiveness, eternal life, and daily grace to all who trust in Him.
Discover who Jesus is according to Scripture, exploring His eternal divinity, His historic incarnation in John 1 and Colossians 1, His saving work on the cross, and how you can know Him personally today.
The Most Important Question in Human History
Throughout history, no figure has divided opinions, inspired art, transformed cultures, or captured hearts quite like Jesus of Nazareth. Skeptics have questioned His claims, historians have verified His existence, and millions across every generation have dedicated their lives to following Him. But beyond the historical debates and cultural opinions, the most critical question anyone can ever ask is the very question Jesus posed to His disciples in Matthew 16:15: “Who do you say that I am?”
Your answer to this question shapes everything. It changes how you view your suffering, how you approach your future, where you place your ultimate hope, and how you experience eternity. At Boundless Online Church, we believe that understanding who Jesus is is not merely an academic exercise; it is the heartbeat of spiritual awakening and soul care. Whether you are searching for faith, carrying quiet doubts, or returning to Christ after years away, Jesus meets you right where you are behind your screen.
The Eternal Word: Who Is Jesus in John 1?
To truly understand Jesus, we must look before the manger in Bethlehem, before the foundation of the earth, into eternity past. The Gospel of John opens with a breathtaking declaration of Christ’s divine nature:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:1–3)
In this passage, John identifies Jesus as the Logos, the eternal Word of God. Notice three crucial truths established right at the start of Scripture:
Jesus is eternal: He did not begin His existence when He was born in Bethlehem. He existed "in the beginning," sharing eternity with the Father.
Jesus is distinct yet divine: He was "with God" in intimate, personal fellowship, and simultaneously He "was God," possessing the fullness of divine nature.
Jesus is the Creator: Every star, every ocean, every breath you take, and every molecule in the universe was spoken into existence through Him.
When John later writes, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14), he announces the miraculous reality of the incarnation. The infinite, holy Creator stepped down into our broken world, cloaked Himself in human skin, and pitched His tent among humanity. He did not watch our suffering from a safe distance; He entered our pain to rescue us.
The Image of the Invisible God: Colossians 1 Explained
Another profound portrait of Jesus is found in the letter to the Colossians. In Colossians 1:15–20, the Apostle Paul pens one of the most majestic Christological hymns in the entire New Testament:
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible... all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:15–17)
What does it mean for Jesus to be the "image of the invisible God"? It means that if you want to know what God is like, how God treats the broken, how God responds to the outcast, how deeply God loves, and how perfectly holy God is, you look at Jesus. Jesus is the visible, tangible exact representation of God's character.
Furthermore, Paul declares that “in him all things hold together.” In a world that often feels chaotic, overwhelming, and fragile, where personal anxiety, global headlines, and private grief threaten to pull our lives apart, Jesus is the divine glue sustaining the cosmos and holding our fragile hearts together. Fully God and Fully Human: The Mystery and Majesty of the Incarnation
Orthodox Christian theology, rooted firmly in Scripture and upheld by historic Christian creeds, affirms that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human in one unified person. He is not fifty percent God and fifty percent man; nor is He a created being or an exalted prophet. He is the God-Man.
Philippians 2:6–8 describes this staggering act of humility:
“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
Why is the dual nature of Jesus so vital for our salvation?
He had to be truly human so that He could truly represent us, walk in our shoes, experience our temptations, and substitute Himself in our place under the penalty of sin.
He had to be truly God so that His life and sacrifice possessed infinite worth, capable of bearing the sins of the entire world and conquering death forever.
Because He walked this earth as a human, He understands your grief, your exhaustion, your anxiety, and your loneliness. He is not a distant deity; He is a sympathetic, loving Savior.
The "I AM" Statements of Jesus: Claiming Divinity
In the Gospel of John, Jesus explicitly claims His divine identity through seven powerful "I AM" statements, echoing God's revelation to Moses at the burning bush ("I AM WHO I AM"). These declarations reveal not only who He is in His essence, but what He provides for our thirsty souls:
"I am the bread of life" (John 6:35) , He alone satisfies the deepest spiritual hunger of the human heart.
"I am the light of the world" (John 8:12) , He dispels the darkness of confusion, guilt, and despair.
"I am the gate for the sheep" (John 10:7) , He provides safe access into God's eternal family and pasture.
"I am the good shepherd" (John 10:11) , He lays down His life for His sheep and guides us through every valley.
"I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25) , He holds power over the grave, offering eternal life to all who believe.
"I am the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6) , He is the exclusive, living pathway to the Father.
"I am the true vine" (John 15:1) , He is the source of all spiritual fruitfulness and abiding strength.
These declarations invite every seeker to stop relying on self-effort and find complete rest in Christ. If you are exploring these truths alongside other resources, visit our blog for more guided devotionals.
Why Did Jesus Have to Die? The Cross and Resurrection
A common question asked by seekers is: Why did Jesus have to die on a cross? Couldn’t God just forgive everyone without a sacrifice?
To understand the cross, we must understand the holiness of God and the reality of sin. Sin is our rebellion against our Creator, our choice to live independently of God, hurting ourselves, others, and breaking our relationship with the source of life. Because God is perfectly just, moral evil and sin cannot simply be swept under the rug. Justice requires a payment.
Instead of demanding that we pay the ultimate penalty for our rebellion, God in His infinite mercy sent His Son to pay it for us. Romans 5:8 declares: “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
On the cross, Jesus bore the weight of human sin, absorbing the wrath and judgment we deserved. He cried out, “It is finished!” (John 19:30), meaning the debt was fully paid in full. Three days later, God proved that the sacrifice was accepted by raising Jesus physically from the dead. The empty tomb is the cornerstone of our faith. Because He lives, we too can live new lives today and forever.
How Can I Know Jesus Personally Today?
Knowing Jesus is not about performing religious rituals, ticking off moral boxes, or joining an exclusive club. It is a living, breathing, personal relationship with a Savior who loves you unconditionally. Jesus is standing at the door of your heart, knocking (Revelation 3:20).
If you have never placed your trust in Jesus, or if you feel ready to turn away from your past and surrender your life to Him, you can take that step right now wherever you are sitting. You don't need fancy words; you simply need an honest heart. You can pray something like this:
"Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I need Your grace. I believe that You are the Son of God, that You died on the cross for my sins, and that God raised You from the dead. Today, I turn away from my sins and invite You to come into my life as my Savior and my Lord. Thank You for loving me, forgiving me, and giving me eternal life. Amen."

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Jesus according to the Bible?
According to the Bible, Jesus is the eternal Son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity, who became fully human through the virgin birth. He is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, the unique Savior who died for human sin, and the risen Lord of all creation.
Did Jesus claim to be God?
Yes. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus explicitly and implicitly claimed divine identity. He forgave sins (which only God can do), accepted worship, declared "Before Abraham was born, I am!" (John 8:58), and stated, "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30).
What are the "I AM" statements of Jesus?
Recorded exclusively in the Gospel of John, the seven "I AM" statements (Bread of Life, Light of the World, Gate, Good Shepherd, Resurrection and the Life, Way/Truth/Life, and True Vine) reveal Jesus's divine nature and His specific provision for our spiritual needs.

Because God is perfectly holy and just, sin must be judged. Jesus volunteered to take our place on the cross, absorbing the penalty of our sin so that we could be forgiven, reconciled to God, and granted eternal life as a free gift of grace.
How can I know Jesus personally?
You can know Jesus by admitting your need for Him, believing in His death and resurrection for your salvation, and surrendering your life to Him in faith. You can begin a relationship with Him right now through prayer and studying His Word.
