Bible Study: The Ultimate Guide to the 16 Fundamental Truths

Ever felt like you were building your faith on shifting sand, unsure of exactly what the core pillars of your belief really are? In a world filled with endless noise and conflicting opinions, having a solid, biblical foundation isn't just helpful: it’s essential for your spiritual survival and growth.

The 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God serve as a roadmap for understanding the heart of God and the primary teachings of Scripture. These truths aren't just dry doctrines; they are life-giving anchors that remind us who God is, who we are in Him, and the incredible future He has prepared for those who love Him.

What are the 16 Fundamental Truths?

The 16 Fundamental Truths are the core theological beliefs that provide a shared foundation for our global community. They cover essential biblical doctrines such as the inspiration of Scripture, the nature of the Trinity, the salvation of humanity through Jesus Christ, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, divine healing, and the second coming of Christ. These truths ensure our teaching remains biblically sound and Christ-centered.

Why Doctrine Matters for Your Daily Walk

You might wonder, "Why do I need a deep dive into doctrine? Can't I just love Jesus?" The truth is, how you love Jesus is shaped by what you believe about Him. Doctrine is simply a formal word for "teaching." When our teaching is rooted in the Word of God, our relationship with Him becomes more stable, our prayer life more powerful, and our witness to the world more clear.

Let’s walk through these sixteen pillars together, exploring the Scripture that brings them to life.

1. The Scriptures Inspired

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It isn’t just a collection of historical stories; it is God’s direct revelation to humanity. As 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us, "All Scripture is God-breathed." It is our final authority for faith and how we live our lives every single day.

2. The One True God

God has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent "I AM." He is the Creator of all things and exists in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This mystery, known as the Trinity, shows us that God is a relational being who invites us into fellowship with Him.

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus is not just a "good teacher." He is fully God and fully man. From His virgin birth and sinless life to His miracles and His substitutionary death on the cross, every aspect of His life points to His identity as the Son of God. His bodily resurrection is the victory that changed history forever.

4. The Fall of Man

To understand the "Good News," we have to understand the bad news. Humans were created good and upright, but by voluntary transgression, we fell. This fall didn't just affect Adam and Eve; it brought a nature of sin into the heart of every person, creating a separation from God that only He could bridge.

5. The Salvation of Man

This is the first of the four "Cardinal Doctrines." Salvation is a gift of grace, received through repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. You cannot earn it, buy it, or work for it. It is by the "washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5) that we are made new.

6. The Ordinances of the Church

We practice two main ordinances:

  • Water Baptism: An outward sign of an inward change. When we are immersed, we publicly declare that we have died to our old selves and been raised to new life in Christ.

  • Holy Communion: A sacred time where we remember Christ’s suffering and death and look forward to His return.

7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The second Cardinal Doctrine is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This is an experience distinct from and following the new birth. It’s not about being "extra holy"; it’s about power for service and witness. Jesus promised in Acts 1:8 that we would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us.

8. The Initial Physical Evidence

Following the biblical pattern found in the book of Acts, we believe the initial physical sign of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. This experience opens the door to a deeper prayer life and a greater sensitivity to the Spirit’s leading.

9. Sanctification

Sanctification is the act of separation from that which is evil and of dedication unto God. It’s both a moment (when you are saved) and a process (as you grow to be more like Jesus). It is a life of holiness, enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.

10. The Church and Its Mission

The Church is the "Body of Christ." Our mission is fourfold:

  1. To be an agency of God for evangelizing the world.

  2. To be a corporate body in which man may worship God.

  3. To be a channel of God’s purpose to build a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son.

  4. To be a people who demonstrate God’s love and compassion for all the world.

11. The Ministry

God provides divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry for the purpose of leading the Church in evangelism, worship, edification, and compassion. Whether you are called to be a pastor or a lay leader, we are all part of God’s plan to reach the lost.

12. Divine Healing

The third Cardinal Doctrine is Divine Healing. We believe that deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers. James 5:14-16 instructs us to pray for the sick, believing that the "prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well."

13. The Blessed Hope

The fourth Cardinal Doctrine is the "Blessed Hope": the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord. This is the "Rapture," and it is our great encouragement that we will one day be with Him forever.

14. The Millennial Reign of Christ

Following the tribulation, Christ will return with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years. This reign will bring the salvation of national Israel and the establishment of universal peace.

15. The Final Judgment

There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. This is a sobering truth that reminds us of the urgency of sharing the Gospel with everyone we meet.

16. The New Heavens and the New Earth

"We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness" (2 Peter 3:13). This is our eternal home: a place where there is no more pain, no more tears, and where we will live in the direct presence of our King.
