In a world that feels increasingly drained and disconnected, we often find ourselves searching for a source of strength that doesn't run dry. Holy Spirit Baptism is a distinct experience for believers, following salvation, that provides spiritual power for witnessing and godly living. It is characterized by the initial evidence of speaking in tongues and empowers the Christian to serve their community and navigate life's challenges with supernatural strength.
The Modern Dilemma: Searching for Power in a Burned-Out World
We live in a high-pressure culture. Recent data for 2025 and 2026 indicates that nearly 55% of the U.S. workforce is currently experiencing significant burnout, with Gen Z and Millennials reporting the highest rates of emotional and physical exhaustion. People are searching for meaning, yet many feel they are running on empty.
Despite this exhaustion, there is a profound spiritual hunger rising. Research shows that 74% of U.S. adults express a desire to grow spiritually, and nearly 44% feel more open to God than they did just a few years ago. The question isn't whether we need help; it’s where that help comes from. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe the answer is found in the person and power of the Holy Spirit.
Definition Block: Understanding the Terms
Before we dive deeper, let's clarify what we mean by these biblical concepts:
Salvation: The act of God’s grace where a person is forgiven of their sins and receives eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.
Sanctification: The lifelong process of being set apart by God and growing in holiness and Christ-like character.
Holy Spirit Baptism: An immersion in the Spirit’s power, distinct from and following the new birth, intended to equip the believer for witness and service.
Initial Physical Evidence: The biblical sign (speaking in tongues) that accompanies the baptism in the Holy Spirit, as seen in the Book of Acts.

What Is Holy Spirit Baptism?
The baptism in the Holy Spirit is one of the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. It is not "salvation 2.0," nor is it a badge of spiritual superiority. Instead, it is a gift from the Father intended for every believer.
In the Book of Acts, we see multiple instances where individuals who already believed in Jesus were subsequently filled with the Holy Spirit. In Acts 8, the believers in Samaria had received the Word and were baptized in water, but the apostles prayed for them to receive the Holy Spirit. In Acts 19, Paul asks the disciples in Ephesus, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"
This experience is described as being "clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49). It is an overflowing of God's presence that shifts our focus from our own limited abilities to His limitless resources.
Why Does the "Evidence" Matter?
For many, the mention of "speaking in tongues" can feel intimidating or confusing. However, in the New Testament, this was the consistent physical sign that the Spirit had fallen upon believers (Acts 2:4, 10:44-46, 19:6).
Why would God use language as a sign?
Surrender: The tongue is often the hardest part of the human body to control. Surrendering our speech to the Spirit is a profound act of yielding our entire selves to God.
Edification: Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians 14 that those who speak in a tongue "edify themselves." It is a private prayer language that allows our spirit to communicate with God even when our minds don't have the words.
Unity: On the Day of Pentecost, the Spirit enabled people to speak in languages they hadn't learned, breaking down cultural barriers, a mission we carry on today in the diverse neighborhoods of Memphis and through our Boundless Online Church.

Why It Matters Today: Power for the 901 and Beyond
The goal of Holy Spirit baptism isn't just to have a "spiritual experience" inside the walls of a church. The goal is power. Acts 1:8 says, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
In our context, that means receiving power to be a witness in:
Memphis: To show the love of Christ in the midst of city challenges.
Cordova & Bartlett: To be a light in our workplaces and schools.
The 901: To serve our neighbors with a patience and kindness that isn't humanly possible.
When we are filled with the Spirit, we receive a "boldness" to share our faith. We find that our prayer lives become more vibrant, and our desire to see others healed and restored grows. Whether you are attending our Wednesday night gatherings or connecting with us from another state, this power is available to you.
How Do You Receive This Gift?
If you are a follower of Jesus, this promise belongs to you. You don't have to "earn" it or be perfect to receive it. Here is how you can seek this experience tonight:
Ask Expectantly: Jesus said the Father loves to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13).
Surrender Fully: Set aside your own agenda and ask God to fill every area of your life.
Receive by Faith: Just as you received salvation by faith, receive the Spirit’s filling by faith.
Yield Your Speech: As you feel the Holy Spirit moving, begin to praise Him, allowing the Spirit to give you the words or sounds that aren't from your own intellect.

Evening Reflection: A Prayer for You
As you close your day, remember that you were never meant to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. You were created to walk in the power of the Spirit. If you feel "burned out," let tonight be the night you ask for a "fresh filling."
Takeaway: Holy Spirit Baptism is God's provision for your exhaustion. It turns "I can't" into "He can."

Are you ready to stop relying on your own strength and start walking in the power of the Holy Spirit today?
