The Holy Spirit matters because He is God’s active presence and power in the world today. For believers, He provides the strength to overcome life's greatest challenges, like anxiety and addiction, while guiding us into truth and empowering us through Spirit Baptism to live a bold, effective Christian life.
If you’ve ever felt like your spiritual "battery" was running low, or if you've wondered how to navigate the complexities of life in the 901 and beyond, you aren't alone. In the Assemblies of God (AG) tradition, we believe the Holy Spirit isn't just a theological concept; He is the "Helper" promised by Jesus to give us more, more joy, more boldness, and more peace.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
Before we dive into the "why," we have to understand the "who." The Holy Spirit is not a "force," a "vibe," or an "it." He is the third Person of the Trinity, fully God, co-equal with the Father and the Son.
In the Book of Acts, we see the Spirit arriving with a sound like a rushing wind and tongues of fire (Acts 2:1-4). This wasn't just for show. It was the fulfillment of Jesus' promise that His followers would receive power to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. Whether you are at a local coffee shop in Memphis or joining us from the other side of the globe through Boundless Online Church, that same Spirit is available to you today.
The "Power Surge" for Your Life
Think about the last time you were driving down a two-lane highway in Tennessee. You get stuck behind a slow-moving 18-wheeler, and you’re looking for a gap to pass. When that opening finally comes, you put the "pedal to the metal," and your engine surges. You had power before, but in that moment, you needed a surge to move forward.
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is that power surge. In our AG 101 foundations, we teach that Spirit Baptism is a distinct experience that follows salvation. While every believer has the Holy Spirit indwelling them from the moment they say "yes" to Jesus, the Baptism is an overflowing fullness that empowers us for service.
What are the benefits of this "surge"?
More Boldness: The courage to share your faith with a neighbor or coworker.
More Wisdom: The insight needed to raise children or navigate a difficult career path.
More Prayer Power: The ability to pray when words fail us (Romans 8:26).

Overcoming Addiction and Anxiety through Grace
We live in a world that often feels like it's designed to keep us anxious or addicted. Whether it’s the constant noise of social media or deeper struggles with substances, the weight can feel insurmountable.
In the conversation of Sin vs. Grace, we must remember that sin is a heavy burden, but grace is a person, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that grace to our daily lives.
Topic | Biblical Message | The Spirit's Role |
Anxiety | "Do not be anxious about anything..." (Phil 4:6) | He is the Comforter who brings peace that surpasses understanding. |
Addiction | "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." (2 Cor 3:17) | He provides the Self-Control needed to break chains and walk in newness of life. |
Grace | "My grace is sufficient for you..." (2 Cor 12:9) | He empowers us to stand when our own strength is gone. |
The Holy Spirit doesn't just point out our flaws; He provides the "how-to" for overcoming them. He helps us exchange the "spirit of fear" for a "spirit of power, love, and a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7).
Miracles in the 901: Real Stories of Power
At First Assembly Memphis, we don't just read about miracles in the Bible; we see them in our own zip codes. From Cordova to Bartlett, we have seen the Holy Spirit move in ways that defy medical explanation and logical reasoning.
One of our favorite "Memphis Miracle" themes is the Miracle Mindset. This isn't just positive thinking. It is a Spirit-led conviction that God is still in the business of healing bodies, restoring marriages, and providing for those in need. When the Holy Spirit moves, things change.
AG 101: Definitions You Should Know
To live a Spirit-filled life, it helps to understand the "language of the Spirit" used in our fellowship.
Spirit Baptism: A special experience following salvation where a believer is filled with the Holy Spirit, providing power for witnessing and service.
Initial Physical Evidence: The Assemblies of God teaches that speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of being baptized in the Holy Spirit, as seen in the Book of Acts.
Sanctification: The ongoing process, led by the Holy Spirit, of being made holy and becoming more like Jesus in our character.
Divine Healing: The belief that God still heals the sick today through the power of the Holy Spirit, often in response to the prayer of faith.

How to Start Living a Spirit-Filled Life Today
Living "Spirit-filled" isn't reserved for pastors or "super-Christians." It’s for every person who is hungry for more of God. Here is how you can begin:
Ask for the Filling: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13). Simply pray, "Holy Spirit, I welcome You. Fill me today."
Yield to the Fruit: Focus on Galatians 5:22-23. Ask the Spirit to produce love, joy, and peace in your interactions with your family and coworkers.
Stay in the Word: The Holy Spirit authored the Scriptures. He will never lead you in a direction that contradicts the Bible.
Connect with Community: We weren't meant to walk this path alone. Whether you're looking for a church in Memphis or a global digital family, community is where the Spirit often moves most tangibly.
Finding Your Place in the Kingdom
Whether you are walking through the doors at First Assembly Memphis or logging into a small group through Boundless, the goal is the same: to help you take one real step closer to Jesus.
The Holy Spirit is the bridge between our human weakness and God’s divine strength. He is the one who turns a "religion" into a relationship. He is the one who makes the "901" feel like a place where heaven meets earth.
