6 min read

Have you ever felt like you were trying to build a house without a blueprint? Faith can sometimes feel that way if we don't have a solid foundation to stand on. You want to grow, you want to lean into what God has for you, but sometimes the "how" and the "what" feel a little fuzzy.

The question many of us face is simple: What are the core, non-negotiable beliefs that keep our faith steady when life gets shaky? Whether you are a lifelong believer or you’re just starting to explore what a relationship with Jesus looks like, having a clear understanding of the 16 Fundamental Truths is like having the ultimate roadmap for your soul.

The answer is found in the heart of the Assemblies of God. These sixteen truths aren't just dry doctrines or ancient history; they are living, breathing principles that help us understand who God is, who we are, and where this whole story is headed. When you engage with a 16 Fundamental Truths Bible Study, you aren’t just learning facts, you’re discovering the heartbeat of God for His people.

In our community at Boundless Online Church, we want you to feel never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved by God. Understanding these truths is a huge part of that. It gives you the confidence to navigate life and the world knowing exactly where you stand.

Why the Foundations Matter

Think of these truths as the guardrails on the bridge of your faith. They don't restrict your movement; they keep you safe so you can cross over to everything God has prepared for you. In fact, it is safe to say that the Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. Without these truths, it is easy to get swept away by every new trend or confusing idea that pops up on our social media feeds.

If you are spending a lot of time online, I always recommend being intentional about what you consume. Just like we need these truths for our spiritual safety, we need practical tools for our digital safety. I always suggest using Bark or Covenant Eyes to keep your digital journey clean and accountable. And when it comes to movies or shows, stick with family-safe options through VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way.” Protecting your heart starts with what you let into your home.

Let’s dive deep into these 16 truths. I’ve broken them down into easy-to-digest sections so you can see how they apply to your life right now.

1. The Core of Our Reality: God and His Word

1. The Scriptures Inspired: We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It’s not just a good book; it’s our final authority for faith and how we live our lives. It’s the ultimate "how-to" guide for the human experience.

2. The One True God: God has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent “I AM.” He is the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind. He exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ: Jesus isn’t just a great teacher or a historical figure. He is the eternal Son of God. We believe in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary work on the cross, His bodily resurrection, and His exaltation to the right hand of God.

2. The Human Condition: Our Problem and God’s Solution

4. The Fall of Man: Man was created good and upright, but man by voluntary transgression fell and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God. This is why we need a Savior.

5. The Salvation of Man (Cardinal Doctrine): This is the "Big One." Man's only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. It’s a free gift, a "welcome home" from the Father to you.

6. The Ordinances of the Church: We practice two main ordinances: Water Baptism by immersion (an outward sign of an inward change) and Holy Communion (remembering Jesus’s sacrifice until He returns).

3. Power and Transformation: Living the Empowered Life

7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Cardinal Doctrine): All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. It brings the endowment of power for life and service.

8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit: We believe that the baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance.

9. Sanctification: This is the process of being set apart from sin and dedicated to God. It’s not about being "perfect" overnight; it’s about growing more like Jesus every single day. It’s a daily "yes" to God’s work in your heart.

4. Our Purpose: Why We Are Here

10. The Church and Its Mission: The Church is the Body of Christ. Every believer is an integral part of the church. Our mission is to seek and save that which is lost, to worship God, to build a body of believers in the image of His Son, and to demonstrate His love and compassion to all the world.

11. The Ministry: A divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord for the fourfold purpose of leading the Church in: Evangelism, Worship, Building a body of saints, and Meeting human need with ministries of love and compassion.

5. God’s Promises: Our Future and Our Hope

12. Divine Healing (Cardinal Doctrine): Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers. God still heals today!

13. The Blessed Hope (Cardinal Doctrine): This is the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord. We look forward to Jesus’s return with great joy!

14. The Millennial Reign of Christ: The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints, followed by the visible return of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years.

15. The Final Judgment: There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works.

16. The New Heavens and the New Earth: "We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness." This is our eternal home, where we will be with God forever.
