Bible Study: Truth #2: The One True God

Jul 26
6 min read

The one true God is the eternally self-existent "I AM," the sovereign Creator of the universe, and the loving Redeemer of humanity. He has revealed Himself as one Being existing eternally in three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, perfectly united in purpose, nature, and essence.

This article explores the biblical foundations of God's nature as revealed in the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths, examining His self-existence, His role as Creator, and the beautiful mystery of the Trinity.

Who Is the Great "I AM"?

At the core of Christian faith is the recognition that God does not depend on anyone or anything else for His existence. When Moses asked for God’s name at the burning bush, the reply was profound: "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14). This declaration signifies that God is eternally self-existent. He is the source of all life, yet He Himself has no beginning and no end.

In a world where everything is shifting and temporary, the self-existence of God provides a firm foundation for our hope. He is the "Alpha and the Omega" (Revelation 21:6), the constant through every generation. For the believer, this means that even when our circumstances change, the God who sustains us remains the same. He is not a created being; He is the uncreated Creator who holds the stars in place and knows the number of hairs on your head.

Understanding God as the "I AM" shifts our perspective from our own limitations to His limitless power. He is not just a "higher power" or a vague spiritual force; He is the living, breathing reality who chose to reveal Himself to us so that we might know Him personally.

The Mystery of the Trinity: One God, Three Persons

One of the most beautiful and complex aspects of God’s nature is the Trinity. The Bible clearly teaches that "the Lord our God, the Lord is one" (Deuteronomy 6:4). Yet, Scripture also reveals that this one God exists in three distinct Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is not a description of three separate gods, but of one God in perfect relationship and association within Himself.

We see the Trinity in action throughout the New Testament. At the baptism of Jesus, the Son is in the water, the Holy Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven (Luke 3:22). This "relationship and association" means that God is inherently relational. Even before the world was made, there was love, communication, and fellowship between the Father, Son, and Spirit.

This truth is practical for your daily life. Because God is relational, you are invited into that relationship. You are not just following a set of rules; you are being called into the fellowship of the Father, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the communion of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14). Whether you are feeling isolated behind a screen or connected in a digital community, you are never truly alone because the Triune God dwells with His people.

The Sovereign Creator of All Things

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). This foundational truth establishes God’s ownership and authority over all that exists. Everything you see: the vast galaxies, the deep oceans, and the intricate details of a single leaf: was spoken into existence by the one true God. He is the Architect of time, space, and matter.

Acknowledging God as Creator means recognizing that your life has purpose. You are not an accident or a product of random chance. You were designed by a Creator who saw you before you were born. This provides a profound sense of dignity and worth to every human being, regardless of their background, health, or status.

When we look at the majesty of creation, we are reminded of God’s power. If He can hold the universe together, He can surely hold your life together. When anxiety or fear tries to take hold, we can look at the heavens and remember that our help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:2). The Gracious Redeemer of Humanity

The one true God is not only the distant Creator but also the intimate Redeemer. Scripture tells us, "I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior" (Isaiah 43:11). After humanity turned away from God through sin, God did not leave us in our brokenness. Instead, He revealed Himself as the Redeemer: the one who pays the price to bring us back into a right relationship with Him.

This redemption was accomplished through the Son, Jesus Christ, who died and rose again to bridge the gap between a holy God and a hurting world. The Father planned the redemption, the Son executed it on the cross, and the Holy Spirit applies it to our hearts today. This is the ultimate "soul care": knowing that you are forgiven, restored, and loved with an everlasting love.

If you are searching for clarity in a noisy digital world, remember that the Redeemer is calling you by name. He offers hope to the grieving, peace to the anxious, and a fresh start to anyone who turns to Him. Why This Truth Matters for You Today

Understanding "The One True God" is not just an academic exercise; it changes how we live. It moves us from "scrolling to soul care." In a world that offers thousands of distractions and "gods" of money, fame, or self-reliance, the Bible calls us back to the only One who can truly satisfy the human heart.

Because God is one, we can have a focused and simplified faith. We don't have to please multiple competing powers; we simply walk with the one true God. Because He is a Trinity, we find a home in His community. Because He is Creator, we find meaning in our existence. And because He is Redeemer, we find grace for our failures. We are a community from every nation, united by this one central Truth.

No matter where you are: whether you are working odd hours, caring for a loved one, or quietly searching for Jesus from behind a screen: the one true God sees you. You are loved. You are not forgotten. You are never alone.

A Prayer for the Reader

Heavenly Father, we thank You for revealing Yourself to us. We stand in awe of Your majesty as the one true God: the eternally self-existent I AM. Thank You for creating us with purpose and redeeming us with Your grace. Spirit of God, open our hearts to understand Your Triune nature more deeply so that we may walk in the fellowship of Your love. For anyone feeling isolated or anxious today, let them feel the warmth of Your presence. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can God be three and one at the same time? The Trinity is a divine mystery that reflects God's infinite nature. While the word "Trinity" isn't in the Bible, the concept is woven throughout. It describes one divine Being (the "what") existing in three distinct Persons (the "who"). Like a chord in music consists of three notes forming one sound, or water exists as ice, liquid, and steam while remaining H2O, these are only small shadows of the glorious unity of God.

2. Why is it important that God is "self-existent"? If God depended on anything else for His existence, He would not be the supreme God. His self-existence means He is completely sufficient. He doesn't "need" us, yet He "wants" us. This makes His love for us even more amazing: it is a choice of pure grace, not a fulfillment of a divine need.

3. How does knowing God as Creator help with my anxiety? Anxiety often stems from a feeling that things are out of control. When we recognize God as the Creator who sustains the entire universe, we realize that our lives are in the hands of the One who has the power to manage every detail. He who created the stars is more than capable of handling your tomorrow.

4. Does the Assemblies of God believe in other gods? No. Following the biblical mandate in Deuteronomy 6:4 and Isaiah 43:10, we believe there is only one true God. Any other "god" is either a man-made idol or a spiritual deception. True peace and salvation are found only in the one true God revealed in Scripture.

5. How can I start a relationship with this one true God? A relationship with God begins with faith in Jesus Christ, the Son. By acknowledging our need for a Redeemer and accepting His gift of salvation, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us, connecting us to the Father. You can start right now by simply talking to Him in prayer.
