Bible Study: Who is Jesus? (The Truth About the Son of God)

Jesus is the Son of God, fully God and fully man, the promised Messiah, and the only way to eternal salvation. He is the central figure of the Christian faith, not just a historical teacher or a moral philosopher, but the Savior of the world.

The Universal Question

If you walk down Beale Street in Memphis or scroll through any social media feed, you’ll hear a thousand different opinions about Jesus. Some see Him as a good man, others as a revolutionary, and many as a mystery. But Jesus Himself asked His disciples the most important question anyone will ever answer: "Who do you say that I am?" (Matthew 16:15).

Knowing the real Jesus isn’t just an academic exercise; it’s a life-changing encounter. He is the one who sees your struggle, loves you without condition, and offers a peace that the world simply cannot provide.

Fully God: The Eternal Word

The Bible begins the story of Jesus long before He was born in a manger. John 1:1 tells us, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Jesus didn't just have "god-like" qualities. He is the second person of the Trinity, equal with the Father and the Holy Spirit. He was present at creation, and through Him, all things were made. When we look at Jesus, we are looking at the visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15).

Fully Man: The Compassionate Savior

While He never ceased being God, Jesus became fully human. He was born of a virgin, grew up in a working-class home, and experienced everything we experience—hunger, thirst, tiredness, and even temptation.

Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that "we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin." Because He was human, He can represent us. Because He was sinless, He could pay for our sins.

His Ministry: Bringing the Kingdom Near

Jesus spent three years traveling, teaching, and healing. He didn't come to set up a political kingdom, but a spiritual one. He reached out to the outcasts, loved the unlovable, and challenged the religious elite who had forgotten the heart of God. His ministry was a living demonstration of God's love and power on earth.

The Ultimate Sacrifice and Victory

The most important moments in history occurred on a hill outside Jerusalem and in a borrowed garden tomb. Jesus willingly gave His life on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins.

But the story didn't end in death. Three days later, He rose from the grave, proving that He had conquered sin and death forever. His resurrection is the foundation of our hope. Because He lives, we can have new life today and eternal life tomorrow.

The Only Way to God

In a world that often wants to believe that "all paths lead to God," the Bible is clear and exclusive. Acts 4:12 states, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."

Jesus Himself said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). He is the only bridge between a holy God and a broken humanity.

How to Respond to Jesus

Knowing who Jesus is requires a response. It isn't enough to agree with the facts; you must place your trust in Him.

  1. Believe: Accept that He is who He says He is.

  2. Repent: Turn away from your old way of living and toward God.

  3. Follow: Invite Him to be the Lord of your life and follow His lead.

A Prayer to Know Him

Lord Jesus, I want to know the real You. Thank You for being fully God and yet becoming fully man to reach me. I believe You died for my sins and rose again to give me life. I turn from my old ways and I invite You to be my Savior and Lord. Lead me, guide me, and help me to follow You every day. Amen.

FAQ: Common Questions About Jesus

Is Jesus really God? Yes. The Bible teaches that Jesus is the eternal Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, who took on human flesh. His miracles, His teaching, and His resurrection all testify to His deity.

Was Jesus a real historical person? Absolutely. Virtually all serious historians, regardless of their religious beliefs, agree that Jesus of Nazareth was a real person who lived in first-century Israel.

Why did Jesus have to die? Because God is holy and just, sin must be punished. Because God is love, He provided a way for that punishment to be paid. Jesus, being sinless, took our place on the cross, taking the punishment we deserved so we could be forgiven.

What does the name 'Jesus' mean? The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Yeshua, which means "The Lord is Salvation." It perfectly describes His mission to save His people from their sins.
