Holy Spirit baptism is a distinct biblical experience following salvation where God empowers believers with supernatural boldness, strength for service, and a deeper prayer life. It is a gift available to every follower of Jesus, often first evidenced by the physical sign of speaking in other tongues.
Have you ever felt like there was a "missing gear" in your spiritual walk? You love Jesus, you read your Bible, and you attend church, but you feel a hunger for something deeper, a boldness you see in the Book of Acts but can’t quite grasp in your daily life. If you’ve ever wondered if there is more to the Christian life than just "getting by," you aren’t alone. Thousands of people in Memphis and around the world through Boundless Online Church are discovering that God has a second gift waiting for them: the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
What Exactly Is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
To understand this experience, we have to look at the terminology. In the Assemblies of God, we believe that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is one of the four "cardinal doctrines" of the faith. It isn't a "bonus" for super-Christians; it is a standard equipment package for every believer.
Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit An experience distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth (salvation). It is an "enduement of power" that provides the believer with the ability to witness, serve, and live a life that honors God with supernatural boldness.
Many people confuse being "born of the Spirit" (salvation) with being "baptized in the Spirit." While the Holy Spirit is present in every believer at the moment of salvation, the baptism is an overflowing, immersion-like experience. Think of it this way: at salvation, you have a well of water inside you; at Spirit baptism, that well becomes a rushing river that overflows to impact everyone around you.

Is Spirit Baptism the Same as Salvation?
One of the most common questions we hear at FA Memphis is, "Do I need this to go to heaven?" The answer is a clear no. Salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ alone. You are a child of God the moment you say "Yes" to Jesus. However, Jesus Himself told His disciples, who were already followers and believers, to wait in Jerusalem until they were "clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49).
Aspect | Salvation (The New Birth) | Baptism in the Holy Spirit |
Purpose | Forgiveness of sin and eternal life | Power for witness and service |
Focus | Internal transformation | External empowerment |
Prerequisite | Repentance and faith in Jesus | Already being a believer |
Evidence | Fruit of the Spirit / Changed life | Speaking in tongues (Initial physical sign) |
Why Do I Need This Experience?
If you are already saved, why seek "more"? The answer is found in Acts 1:8: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Boldness to Share Your Faith: Many Christians struggle with the fear of man. Spirit baptism provides a "holy fire" that makes sharing the Gospel feel natural rather than forced.
A Powerful Prayer Life: Sometimes, words fail us. When we are baptized in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit helps us pray "in the Spirit," bypassing our limited vocabulary to speak directly from our heart to God's heart.
Sensitivity to God’s Voice: This experience often "turns up the volume" on how we hear the Holy Spirit’s prompting in our daily lives, whether that's a call to pray for a neighbor in the 901 or a nudge to help someone in need.
Entrance to Spiritual Gifts: This baptism is often the gateway to the gifts of the Spirit mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12, such as words of wisdom, healing, and prophecy.

Understanding "The Evidence" (Speaking in Tongues)
In the Pentecostal tradition, we talk a lot about "Initial Physical Evidence." This simply means that when someone is baptized in the Holy Spirit, there is usually a physical sign that accompanies the internal spiritual work. According to the pattern in the Book of Acts (chapters 2, 10, and 19), that sign is speaking in other tongues.
This can sound intimidating if you’ve never experienced it, but it is actually one of the most beautiful gifts God gives. It is a language of praise where the Holy Spirit provides the words, and you provide the voice. It isn't "mind control"; you are fully in control, but you are cooperating with the Spirit to express things your mind can't quite articulate.
How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, this gift is already yours! You don't have to "earn" it or be a perfect person to receive it. Here are four practical steps for anyone seeking this experience:
Ask in Faith: Jesus said in Luke 11:13, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Simply ask Him.
Surrender and Worship: Find a quiet place, or join us at FA Memphis for a prayer service, and focus entirely on the goodness of God. Let your heart overflow with gratitude.
Expect and Cooperate: As you pray, you may feel a "bubbling up" of words or syllables that you don't recognize. Don't analyze them with your mind; speak them out in faith. The Spirit gives the utterance, but you do the speaking.
Be Persistent: Sometimes people receive instantly; for others, it is a process of yielding. Don't get discouraged. God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
