Bible Study: What Is Holy Spirit Baptism? A Beginner’s Guide to the Pentecostal Life in Memphis

Holy Spirit baptism is a distinct, post-salvation spiritual experience where a believer is filled with God's power for bold witness and service. As taught in the Assemblies of God, it is often accompanied by the initial physical evidence of speaking in other tongues.

Whether you are walking the streets of Memphis or joining us from the other side of the globe, you may have heard the term "Pentecostal" or seen people praying with a unique fervor. This isn't just about emotion; it’s about a biblical promise meant for every follower of Jesus. In this guide, we will break down what Holy Spirit baptism is, why it matters for your daily life, and how you can experience this "promise of the Father" today.

What is Holy Spirit Baptism?

In the Assemblies of God (AG), Holy Spirit baptism is considered one of the four cardinal doctrines. It is not the same thing as being "born again" or receiving salvation. Instead, it is a subsequent experience where the Holy Spirit, who already dwells within a believer, overflows to empower them for ministry.

Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit A spiritual experience distinct from and following the New Birth, in which the believer is filled with the Holy Spirit for the purpose of receiving power to witness and live an overcoming life.

This experience is available to all believers. In the book of Acts, Jesus told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they were "clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49). This wasn't a suggestion for a select few; it was a command for the entire Church.

The Biblical Foundation

The most famous account of Holy Spirit baptism occurs in Acts 2 on the Day of Pentecost. The Bible says that they were all gathered in one place when a sound like a rushing wind filled the house, and "tongues of fire" rested on each of them.

Why the Evidence of Tongues?

One of the most common questions we receive at FA Memphis is about speaking in tongues. According to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, the "initial physical evidence" of this baptism is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

This serves several purposes:

  1. A Sign to the Believer: It is a personal confirmation that you have received the gift.

  2. A Tool for Prayer: It allows you to pray beyond your own understanding (1 Corinthians 14:14).

  3. A Witness to Others: In the early church, it was the unmistakable sign that God was moving among His people.

Definition: Initial Physical Evidence The biblical sign (speaking in tongues) that accompanies the baptism in the Holy Spirit, as seen in the New Testament church.

Why Do You Need It?

You might be wondering, "If I'm already saved, why do I need more?" The answer lies in the mission. Living for Jesus in a complex world, whether you’re navigating life in Cordova, Bartlett, or downtown Memphis, requires more than just human willpower.

The Need

The Holy Spirit’s Solution

Weakness in Witnessing

Power to share the Gospel boldly (Acts 1:8).

Shallow Prayer Life

Deepened intimacy and "groanings" in the Spirit (Romans 8:26).

Lack of Spiritual Gifts

Distribution of gifts like healing and prophecy (1 Corinthians 12).

Burnout

Constant refreshing and "rivers of living water" (John 7:38).

Spirit baptism isn't about being "better" than other Christians; it’s about being better equipped. It’s about having the fuel necessary to run the race God has set before you.

Pentecostal Life in the 901

In Memphis, faith is woven into the very fabric of our city. From the blues on Beale Street to the historic churches on every corner, the 901 knows about soul. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe the "Pentecostal life" is about bringing that soul into alignment with God’s Spirit.

Living a Pentecostal life in Memphis means:

  • Active Community: We don't just "go to church"; we are a family.

  • Expectant Worship: When we gather, we expect God to show up, heal the sick, and speak to our hearts.

  • Outreach-Focused: Because we have the Spirit’s power, we are called to serve our neighbors in Arlington, Millington, and beyond.

How to Receive Holy Spirit Baptism

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, this gift is already yours for the asking. You don't have to "earn" it or be perfect. You simply need to be hungry for more of God.

  1. Ask in Faith: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13).

  2. Surrender: Let go of your own control. Pentecost is about letting God lead.

  3. Wait Expectantly: Spend time in prayer, worship, and reading the Word.

  4. Receive: When the Spirit moves, respond. If you feel the urge to speak in a language you haven't learned, do so in faith.
