Bible Study: What Is the Holy Spirit? AG 101: A Beginner's Guide to Mastering Your Spiritual Walk

Have you ever felt like your faith was running on "empty", like you were trying to live a Christian life using only your own willpower?

What Is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, fully God, who lives within believers to empower, comfort, and guide them. He is not a "force" or a "feeling," but a Person who provides the spiritual power needed to live like Jesus and witness to the world.

Whether you are in the heart of Memphis or joining us from the other side of the globe, understanding the Holy Spirit is the difference between surviving your faith and thriving in it. In the Assemblies of God (AG), we believe the Holy Spirit is central to everything we do. This guide will walk you through the basics of who He is, what He does, and why He matters for your spiritual walk today.

The Person of the Holy Spirit (He Is Not an "It")

One of the most common mistakes people make is referring to the Holy Spirit as "it." But the Bible is clear: the Holy Spirit is a Person. He has a mind, emotions, and a will. He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), He can be resisted (Acts 7:51), and He speaks to us (Acts 13:2).

As the third member of the Trinity, He is co-equal with God the Father and God the Son (Jesus). While Jesus walked the earth in a physical body, He promised that after He left, He would send "another Helper" (John 14:16), the Holy Spirit, who would be with us forever.

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit: The AG Perspective

In the Assemblies of God, we emphasize a specific experience called the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. While the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you the moment you accept Jesus as Savior (salvation), the "Baptism" is a distinct, subsequent experience meant to equip you with power.

Think of it like this: Salvation is like getting a glass of water to drink; the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is like being plunged into the ocean. It is an "overflowing" of God's presence in your life.

Why Do We Speak in Tongues? (Initial Physical Evidence)

One of the distinct markers of a Pentecostal church like First Assembly Memphis is our belief in "Initial Physical Evidence." We believe that when someone is first baptized in the Holy Spirit, they will speak in "other tongues" as the Spirit gives them utterance (Acts 2:4).

This isn't about being "extra holy" or "more saved." It is a sign, a physical marker that the Spirit has filled the believer to overflowing. It was the pattern seen throughout the book of Acts (chapters 2, 10, and 19), and we believe that same pattern continues today.

The Purpose: Empowerment for Service

The Holy Spirit doesn't give us power just so we can have a "mountain-top" emotional experience. He gives us power for a purpose. According to Acts 1:8, that purpose is to be witnesses.

The Spirit gives us:

  1. Boldness: To share our faith even when it’s uncomfortable.

  2. Guidance: To know what to say and where to go.

  3. Sanctification: The internal strength to turn away from sin and become more like Jesus.

  4. Comfort: The peace that passes understanding during Memphis's hardest seasons or global crises.

Spiritual Gifts and Your Walk

Beyond the initial baptism, the Holy Spirit provides "Spiritual Gifts" (charismata) to the church. These include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, and more (1 Corinthians 12).

These gifts aren't for personal display; they are for the "common good." They are tools provided by the Spirit to help us serve one another and reveal God’s love to a hurting world. Whether you are serving in a local ministry in Cordova or Bartlett, or connecting with our global Boundless community, these gifts are meant to be active in your life.

Practical Life Takeaways: How to Walk in the Spirit

Living a Spirit-led life isn't about waiting for a lightning bolt; it's about a daily relationship.

  • Ask Daily: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13). Start your morning by saying, "Holy Spirit, fill me today."

  • Listen: Practice moments of silence in your prayer time. If a scripture or a person’s name comes to mind, pay attention, it might be the Spirit’s prompting.

  • Step Out in Faith: The Spirit provides the power, but you provide the feet. If you feel a nudge to pray for someone or share a kind word, do it.

Definition: Sanctification The ongoing process, led by the Holy Spirit, of being set apart from sin and made holy, becoming more like Jesus Christ in character and action.
