Bible Study:What Is Salvation? AG 101: A Beginner's Guide to Mastering Your Walk with Jesus

You were made for more than just surviving; you were made for a relationship that changes everything.

What is salvation?

Salvation is God’s free gift of forgiveness and eternal life, received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. It is the restoration of our broken relationship with God, rescuing us from the power of sin and bringing us into a new life of purpose and peace.

The word "salvation" is used often in church circles, but for many, it feels like a heavy theological term locked behind a stained-glass window. At its heart, salvation isn't about joining a religion or checking off a list of rules. It is about a rescue. In the Assemblies of God (AG), we believe salvation is the foundational experience of the Christian faith, a turning point where our past is forgiven, our present is empowered, and our future is secured.

Understanding the Need: The Great Divide

Before we can appreciate the "Good News," we have to understand the reality of our current situation. The Bible teaches that every human being has "sinned", which simply means we have missed the mark of God’s perfect standard. This sin creates a gap between us and a holy God that we cannot bridge on our own.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. , Romans 3:23

According to recent data on spiritual health, a growing number of people report feeling "spiritually disconnected" or "searching for a deeper meaning." This internal restlessness is often the soul’s way of acknowledging that divide. Salvation is the bridge God built to bring us back home.

The AG 101 Guide to Salvation

In the Assemblies of God, we look to the 16 Fundamental Truths to anchor our understanding. Truth #5 specifically outlines that salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ.

How Do I Receive Salvation? (The ABCs)

Walking with Jesus doesn't require a master's degree in divinity. It begins with a few simple, life-changing steps:

  1. A – Admit your need. Acknowledge that you have sinned and cannot save yourself. (Romans 3:23)

  2. B – Believe in Jesus. Trust that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died for your sins, and that He rose again. (Romans 10:9)

  3. C – Confess Him as Lord. Openly declare that Jesus is the leader of your life.

  4. D – Depart from sin. With the Holy Spirit's help, begin to turn away from the things that hurt your relationship with God.

It is by grace you have been saved, through faith. , Ephesians 2:8

The Result: A New Way of Living

Salvation isn't just a "fire insurance" policy for the afterlife; it is a transformation that begins the moment you say "yes" to Jesus. This process is called sanctification. While salvation happens in an instant, learning to live like Jesus is a lifelong journey of growth.

  • Inner Evidence: You will feel a new sense of peace and the "witness" of the Holy Spirit in your heart, telling you that you belong to Him.

  • Outer Evidence: Your desires begin to change. You find yourself wanting to love others, serve your community, and live with integrity.

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. , 2 Corinthians 5:17

Practical Steps for Your Walk with Jesus

Once you have taken that first step of faith, the "mastering" of your walk involves daily habits that keep you connected to the Source:

  • Read the Word: Start with the Gospel of John in the Bible to learn more about Jesus' life and love.

  • Prayer: This is simply talking to God. You don't need fancy words; just be honest with Him.

  • Community: You weren't meant to do this alone. Finding a local church or an online community provides the support and encouragement you need to grow.
