Bible Study: What Is Spirit Baptism? 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Mastering the Christian Walk in the 901

What is Spirit baptism?

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience following salvation where Jesus empowers believers with spiritual vitality and boldness for witness and service. As taught in the Assemblies of God, it is initially evidenced by speaking in other tongues as the Holy Spirit gives utterance.

The Power Source You Didn't Know You Had

Have you ever felt like your spiritual life was running on a low battery? You love Jesus, you read your Bible, and you’re trying your best in the 901, but sometimes it feels like you’re missing that "spark" to truly make an impact in your neighborhood, your workplace, or your family.

If that’s you, you’re not alone. In fact, the first disciples felt the exact same way. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave them a very specific instruction: Don’t leave yet. He told them to wait for the "Promise of the Father." That promise was the baptism in the Holy Spirit, a gift designed to turn ordinary people into extraordinary witnesses.

Whether you are joining us from Cordova, Bartlett, or halfway across the globe via Boundless Online Church, understanding this gift is the key to moving from "surviving" your faith to "thriving" in your calling.

What Does the Bible Actually Say?

The baptism in the Holy Spirit isn’t a modern invention; it’s a biblical pattern. In the Book of Acts, we see that the early church didn't just believe in Jesus; they were empowered by Him.

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." , Acts 1:8

Notice that Jesus doesn't say you'll receive "information." He says you'll receive power. This word in the original Greek is dunamis, which is where we get the word "dynamite." It is an explosive, life-altering strength that helps you stand firm when life in Memphis gets tough and gives you the words to say when a friend is hurting.

Defining the Experience: AG 101

To help you navigate these spiritual waters, let’s look at a few core definitions that we hold dear at First Assembly Memphis and Boundless.

Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit An experience following salvation where the believer is "immersed" in the Spirit’s power. Its primary purpose is to provide the believer with power for witnessing and effective service.
Definition: Salvation The act of being "saved" from sin through faith in Jesus Christ. This is the first step in the Christian journey and is required before receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Definition: Sanctification The lifelong process of being set apart for God and becoming more like Jesus in character and action.

Why Do We Speak in Tongues?

One of the most common questions we get at FA Memphis is about the "initial physical evidence." In the Assemblies of God, we believe, based on the pattern in Acts 2, 10, and 19, that when a person is first baptized in the Spirit, they speak in a language they haven't learned.

Think of it like a signpost. The signpost isn't the destination (the power is the destination!), but it lets you know you’ve arrived. Speaking in tongues is a beautiful, personal prayer language that allows your spirit to communicate directly with God beyond the limits of your own understanding.

Living it Out in Memphis and Beyond

Why does this matter for someone living in the 901? Because Memphis is a city that needs the light of Christ. Whether you are volunteering at a local outreach in Cordova or just trying to be a godly parent in Germantown, you need more than your own strength. You need the dunamis of God.

For our global family at Boundless Online Church, this message is just as vital. You might be the only believer in your workplace or your city. Spirit baptism gives you the boldness to stand alone and the grace to love others well, even when it’s difficult.

How Can I Receive This Gift?

If you’re sitting there thinking, "I want that power," the good news is that it’s a gift. You don't have to earn it, and you don't have to be perfect to receive it.

  1. Ask: Jesus said the Father loves to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13).

  2. Believe: Trust that this promise is for you, not just for people in the Bible.

  3. Receive: Open your heart and surrender to God’s presence.

  4. Respond: If you feel the Holy Spirit moving on your heart or giving you words you don't recognize, speak them out in faith!

One Step Closer to Jesus

At the end of the day, everything we do, whether it’s worship, preaching, or teaching about Spirit baptism, is about one thing: getting closer to Jesus. The Holy Spirit was sent to glorify Christ and to help us live the life He called us to live.

Are you ready to stop running on a low battery? Are you ready to see what God can do through a person fully empowered by His Spirit?
