Holy Spirit Baptism is a distinct spiritual experience where Jesus fills a believer with supernatural power for witnessing, holy living, and service. It is subsequent to salvation and is normally accompanied by the initial physical evidence of speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.
Have you ever felt like there was "more" to your walk with God? Maybe you love Jesus, you’ve been saved, and you’re growing in your faith, but you feel a hunger for a deeper level of boldness or a more vibrant prayer life.
If you've ever asked that question, you aren't alone. In fact, that's exactly where the first disciples were after the resurrection. They knew Jesus, they believed in Him, but they were waiting for a specific promise. At FA Memphis and Boundless Online Church, we believe that promise, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, is still available and essential for every believer today.
Welcome to AG 101. In this beginner’s guide, we’re going to walk through what Holy Spirit Baptism is, why it matters for your journey, and how you can receive this gift from God.
Definition: What Is Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
Baptism in the Holy Spirit: A supernatural experience following salvation where Jesus Christ (the Baptizer) fills or "immerses" the believer in the Holy Spirit. This experience provides an enduement of power for Christian life, witness, and service, typically evidenced by speaking in tongues.
1. It’s a Second Step: Distinct and Subsequent
One of the most common questions we get in the 901 and in our digital community is: "Didn't I get the Holy Spirit when I was saved?"
The answer is yes, and no. When you are born again, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you. He is the one who convicts us of sin and seals us for the day of redemption. You cannot be a Christian without the Holy Spirit!
However, the Assemblies of God teaches that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience that happens after (subsequent to) salvation. Think of it like this: If salvation is like having a glass of water, Holy Spirit Baptism is like being thrown into the ocean. It is an immersion.
In the Book of Acts, we see this pattern repeatedly. People would believe in Jesus, and then they would be filled with the Spirit (Acts 8:14-17, Acts 19:1-6). It is a "plus" experience, a gift intended to take your relationship with God to a new level of power.
2. The Purpose: Why Do I Need It?
God doesn't give gifts just for the sake of an "experience." There is a deep, practical purpose behind Holy Spirit Baptism.
Power for Witnessing: Jesus said in Acts 1:8, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Whether you are sharing your faith in a Cordova coffee shop or chatting with someone across the globe through Boundless, this baptism gives you a supernatural boldness to speak the Truth.
A Deeper Prayer Life: When you are filled with the Spirit, your prayer life often takes on a new dimension. You find yourself praying with more focus, more passion, and sometimes even in a language you didn't learn (tongues), which Paul says builds up the believer (1 Corinthians 14:4).
Sensitivity to the Spirit: You begin to hear God's "still, small voice" more clearly. You might feel promptings to pray for a neighbor or a coworker, or receive a "word of wisdom" when a friend is struggling.
Boldness in Service: It equips you to serve your family, your church, and the city of Memphis with a strength that isn't your own.
3. The Evidence: What About Speaking in Tongues?
We know this is often the "elephant in the room" for those new to Pentecostal life. In the Assemblies of God, we believe that speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of being baptized in the Spirit.
Why do we believe this? Because we see it as the biblical pattern.
Acts 2: The 120 in the upper room were filled and spoke in tongues.
Acts 10: Cornelius and his household were filled and spoke in tongues.
Acts 19: The disciples at Ephesus were filled and spoke in tongues.
Tongues are not a "merit badge" or a sign that you are a "better" Christian. They are a sign that the Spirit has fully taken residence and is now overflowing. It is a beautiful, humble way of saying, "Lord, even my tongue belongs to You."
4. How to Receive: Your Spiritual Journey
Receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't about working yourself up or being "perfect." It's a gift. You don't earn a gift; you simply receive it. Here is how you can begin that journey:
Be Born Again: The Spirit-filled life begins with a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you haven't taken that first step of salvation, start there.
Ask with Expectancy: Jesus gave us a wonderful promise in Luke 11:13: "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Simply ask Him.
Surrender and Yield: Spend time in worship. Focus on the goodness of God. As you pray, yield your heart and your voice to Him.
Step Out in Faith: Often, as the Spirit begins to move, you may feel an impression of sounds or words in your heart. Step out and speak them! The Holy Spirit gives the "utterance," but you do the speaking.
A Journey, Not a Destination
Holy Spirit Baptism isn't a "one-and-done" event. It’s the beginning of a life lived in the overflow. Whether you are walking the streets of Bartlett or connecting with us from halfway around the world, this power is for you. It’s about being equipped to love people better, serve God more faithfully, and experience the presence of Jesus more deeply every single day.
If you’ve been feeling that "spiritual hunger," take it as a sign from the Lord. He has more for you.
