Bible Study: What Is the Assemblies of God? AG 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Our Pentecostal Roots

Ever wonder why some churches feel so full of energy, prayer, and a deep sense of the Holy Spirit’s presence? You might be experiencing the heart of the Assemblies of God.

What is the Assemblies of God? The Assemblies of God (AG) is a global Pentecostal Christian denomination that believes the Bible is God’s inspired Word and that the Holy Spirit is active today. Founded in 1914, the AG focuses on four "cardinal doctrines": salvation through Jesus, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, divine healing, and the second coming of Christ.

If you’ve ever driven through Cordova, Bartlett, or Arlington and seen an "Assembly" church, or if you’ve joined us at First Assembly Memphis, you’ve stepped into a movement that is both historically rooted and modern in its reach. Whether you are a lifelong believer or just spiritually curious, understanding where we come from helps clarify where we are going together.

A Movement Born from Fire: The History of the AG

The Assemblies of God didn't start in a boardroom; it started in a prayer meeting. In the early 1900s, a spiritual "awakening" swept across the world, most notably during the Azusa Street Revival. People from all walks of life experienced a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit, much like the early church in the Book of Acts.

In 1914, around 300 ministers and laypeople gathered in Hot Springs, Arkansas. They didn't want to create a rigid "religion." Instead, they wanted to protect the purity of the Gospel, support global missions, and create a fellowship where the Holy Spirit was always welcome. Today, that small gathering has grown into a global family of over 85 million people. You can read more about our specific local journey on our History page.

The 16 Fundamental Truths (Simplified for You)

While we are "people of the Book" (the Bible), we have 16 core beliefs that serve as our guardrails. These ensure that our teaching stays grounded in Scripture. Here is a quick look at some of the most vital ones:

  1. The Bible is our Boss: We believe the Bible is inspired by God and is the final word on how we should live.

  2. The Trinity: God is One, but reveals Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  3. Jesus is God: He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died for us, and rose again.

  4. The Fall: Humans weren't always messy, but sin entered the world and separated us from God.

  5. Salvation: The only way back to God is through faith in Jesus Christ.

Definition Block: Justification Justification is a beautiful theological term that simply means God declares us "not guilty." Because of what Jesus did on the cross, when we put our faith in Him, our debt is paid. It’s "just-as-if-I’d" never sinned.

The 4 Cardinal Doctrines: Our Spiritual Compass

Every Assemblies of God church, from Memphis to the farthest reaches of the globe via Boundless Online Church, stands on these four pillars:

  • Salvation: The foundation of everything. God loves you so much that He provided a way for you to be forgiven and have eternal life.

  • Baptism in the Holy Spirit: We believe God wants to empower you for life and service. This is a distinct experience that gives you "spiritual fuel" to share God’s love with others.

  • Divine Healing: We believe God still heals the sick today. It’s not a magic trick; it’s a compassionate response from a loving Father.

  • The Second Coming: We live with hope because we know Jesus is coming back to make all things right.

Why This Matters for Families in the 901

At First Assembly Memphis, we aren’t just a "headquarters" for doctrine; we are a home for your family. Whether you live in the heart of Memphis or the growing neighborhoods of Bartlett and Arlington, we know that life is hard. Families are under pressure, and kids are looking for answers.

Being part of a Spirit-filled community means you don't have to do life alone. Our roots in the Assemblies of God mean we prioritize:

  • Strong Marriages: Building homes on biblical truth.

  • Youth & Kids: Empowering the next generation to know God’s voice.

  • Community: From our Wednesday night meals to local outreach, we are here to serve the 901.

Definition Block: Sanctification Sanctification is the lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus. It’s not about being perfect today; it’s about being a little more like Him tomorrow than you were yesterday.

From Memphis to the Nations

The "Assembly" in our name means "gathering." While we love gathering in our physical building in Memphis, we believe the Kingdom of God is "Boundless." Through our digital ministry, we reach those who can't make it to a physical building, the homebound, the traveler, or the curious seeker in another country.

If you aren't in the Memphis area, you can still experience our Pentecostal heritage and teaching through Boundless Online Church. We provide the same biblical depth and community care, no matter where your GPS says you are.
