What is the Holy Spirit according to the Bible?
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, fully God, co-equal with the Father and the Son. He is God’s active presence dwelling within believers, providing the supernatural power needed for spiritual living, comfort during trials, and divine guidance into all biblical truth.
For many people starting their faith journey, the Holy Spirit can feel like a mystery. You might hear people talk about "the Spirit moving" or "feeling the lead of the Lord," but what does that actually mean for your Tuesday afternoon or your toughest family decisions?

The Role of the Holy Spirit in the Trinity
We believe in one God who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. This isn't three gods, but one God in perfect unity. While Jesus walked the earth, he was physically limited to one place at one time. Before he ascended to heaven, he promised to send "another Helper" who would be with every believer, everywhere, all at once (John 14:16).
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit: An AG Perspective
One of the distinctives of the Assemblies of God is our belief in the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Based on the 16 Fundamental Truths, we believe this is an experience distinct from and following the experience of the "new birth" (salvation).
When you are saved, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in you. However, the Baptism in the Spirit is an "overflow" experience. In Acts 1:8, Jesus says: "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

The Holy Spirit doesn't just give us "goosebumps" during worship; He performs critical functions in our daily lives:
Empowerment for Witnessing: He gives us the courage and the right words to share our faith with others in the Memphis 901 area and across the globe.
Conviction of Sin: He gently points out areas where we are drifting from God's best, leading us toward repentance and healing.
Divine Comfort: In seasons of grief or anxiety, He is our "Paraclete", one who walks alongside us to provide supernatural peace.

Stay in the Word: The Holy Spirit wrote the Bible through inspired authors. He speaks most clearly through the scriptures He already provided.
Common Questions About the Holy Spirit
Is speaking in tongues required for salvation? No. Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. We believe speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4), but it is not a requirement for entering heaven.
Can anyone receive the Holy Spirit? Yes! If you have put your faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit is God's gift to you. You don't have to "earn" Him; you simply need to ask and receive in faith.
