The short answer

Some of the most strengthening Bible verses for when you are exhausted are Isaiah 40:29, Matthew 11:29-30, 2 Corinthians 12:9, Psalm 73:26, and Galatians 6:9. Together they tell you that God gives strength to the weary, that Jesus offers rest for your soul, and that His power shows up best right where you feel weakest.

Below are 13 NIV verses, grouped by the kind of tired you might be feeling, each with a short reflection and a one-line prayer. Start with the heading that sounds like your week.

Maybe you are caring for a parent, working double shifts, raising little ones, or serving every time the church doors open. Maybe you are just tired in a way a nap does not fix. Friend, being worn out does not mean you are failing God. You are human, and He is gentle with tired people.

When your body is running on empty

Isaiah 40:29

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Notice who this promise is for: the weary and the weak. You do not have to be strong to qualify. Your empty tank is the very place God loves to pour in fresh strength.

Pray: Lord, I am weary today, so I am asking You for strength I do not have on my own.

1 Kings 19:7

The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, "Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you."

Elijah was so worn out he asked God to take his life (1 Kings 19:4). God did not scold him. He let him sleep, fed him, and came back a second time. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is eat a real meal and rest.

Pray: Father, thank You for caring about my body, not just my soul. Help me receive the rest and care You provide.

Mark 6:31

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."

The disciples had just come back from ministry, and they could not even find time to eat. Jesus did not push them to do more. He invited them to rest with Him. Rest is not laziness. It is His invitation.

Pray: Jesus, I accept Your invitation. Show me where my quiet place is today.

When you are burned out from carrying everyone

Exodus 18:18

You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.

Moses was serving people from morning until evening (Exodus 18:13), and his father-in-law Jethro lovingly told him the truth. You were never meant to carry everything alone. Sharing the load is not weakness. It is wisdom.

Pray: Lord, show me what I need to hand off, and send me people who can help carry this load.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

If you are tired from caregiving, parenting, or serving, this verse sees you. The good you are doing matters, even when no one says thank you. A harvest is coming in God's timing.

Pray: God, renew my heart for the good You have called me to do, and help me trust Your timing for the harvest.

Matthew 11:29-30

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Right after inviting the weary to come to Him, Jesus calls Himself gentle and humble in heart. Burnout often comes from carrying a yoke He never handed us. His way is lighter.

Pray: Jesus, I lay down the burdens You never asked me to carry, and I take up Your easy yoke.

When you feel too weak to keep going

2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

Paul asked God to take away a painful struggle, and God answered that His grace is enough. You do not have to hide your weakness from God. That is exactly where Christ's power comes to rest.

Pray: Lord, Your grace is enough for me today. Let Your power rest on me right here in my weakness.

Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

The psalmist is honest that his body and heart were giving out. But he did not stop there. He found that God Himself was his strength. Your feelings may run low, but God does not run out.

Pray: God, when my heart is failing, be the strength of my heart and my portion today.

When the hard season just keeps going

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

Some seasons are long: an illness, a hard job, years of caregiving. The outside wears down, but on the inside, where no one can see, God is renewing you day by day.

Pray: Father, renew me on the inside today, even while the outside feels worn down.

Isaiah 40:30-31

Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Even the young and strong get tired. The promise is not that you will never get tired. It is that hope in the LORD brings new strength. Some days you soar, some days you run, and some days you just walk. All three count.

Pray: Lord, I put my hope in You. Renew my strength for whatever today asks of me.

When you need God to fill you up again

Psalm 23:1-3

The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake.

A good shepherd knows when his sheep need to stop. Being made to lie down does not always feel like a gift at first. But quiet waters are where He refreshes your soul.

Pray: Good Shepherd, lead me to quiet waters and refresh my soul.

Zechariah 4:6

So he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty.

Zerubbabel was leading the rebuilding of the temple, and God reminded him it would not be finished by human muscle. A lot of burnout comes from doing God's work in our own strength. The Holy Spirit gives the power to finish what God started.

Pray: Holy Spirit, I cannot do this by my own might. Fill me and work through me.

Romans 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

God does not just want to top you off. He wants you to overflow. As Pentecostal believers, we believe the Holy Spirit still fills and refreshes God's people today (Ephesians 5:18). Ask Him to fill you again today.

Pray: God of hope, fill me with Your joy and peace until I overflow by the power of Your Spirit.

A gentle word about getting help

God really does strengthen tired people through His Word and prayer. It is also wise to pay attention when exhaustion will not lift. If you are tired all the time, struggling to sleep or eat, or losing interest in the people you love, please talk with your doctor or a Christian counselor. God also works through caring, skilled people. Getting help is not a lack of faith.

If you ever feel unsafe or have thoughts of hurting yourself, please reach out right away. Our Emergency Help and Prayer Support page lists who to call.

A simple way to use these verses this week

  • Pick one verse a day and pray its one-line prayer morning and night.

  • Take one real rest. Put a walk, a nap, or a phone-free evening on your calendar.

  • Share the load. Tell one trusted person how tired you really are, and let them pray with you.

You do not have to earn God's strength by trying harder. He gives it freely to the weary. Come to Him tired, as often as it takes.
