The short answer

Some of the best Bible verses for anxiety and worry are Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:7, Isaiah 41:10, Matthew 6:34, John 14:27, and Psalm 4:8. They do more than tell you to stop worrying. They invite you to hand your worries to a God who cares about you, and they give you words to pray when your own words run out.

Below are 15 verses from the NIV, grouped by the moment you might be in right now. Each one comes with a simple, honest way to pray it. You do not have to read them all at once. Find the heading that sounds like your day and start there.

Maybe it is 2 a.m. and your mind keeps replaying that conversation. Maybe it is a test result, a bill, a teenager who is not answering, or a tight feeling in your chest you cannot even name. Friend, feeling anxious does not make you a bad Christian. It makes you human, and God knows exactly how you are made (Psalm 103:14). Even Jesus felt deep distress in the garden of Gethsemane, and He took it straight to His Father in prayer (Matthew 26:36-39). You can do the same.

When your mind won't slow down

Philippians 4:6-7

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Pray it: Paul does not say, "Just stop it." He says to turn every worry into a request. Name your worries out loud, one at a time: "Lord, here is the bill. Here is my son. Here is that appointment." Then thank Him for one thing He has already done. Peace may not come all at once, but God promises it will stand guard over your heart and mind.

Isaiah 26:3

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."

Pray it: When your thoughts are bouncing everywhere, pick this one verse and breathe it in slowly. "Lord, I fix my mind on You. I trust You." Repeat it as often as you need. Steadfast simply means steady, and God can make you steady.

Psalm 94:19

"When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy."

Pray it: The psalmist admits his anxiety was great. You can be that honest too. "God, my anxiety feels huge right now. Comfort me the way only You can." Then sit quietly for a minute and let Him.

Psalm 139:23-24

"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

Pray it: This is a brave prayer. Instead of running from your anxious thoughts, you invite God to look right at them with you. Ask Him to show you which worries are yours to act on and which ones are His to carry.

When you're afraid of what's next

Matthew 6:34

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Pray it: Jesus gives you permission to live in today. "Lord, give me what I need for today, and help me leave tomorrow with You." When your mind races ahead to next month, gently bring it back to the next small step.

Isaiah 41:10

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Pray it: Count the promises packed into one verse: I am with you, I am your God, I will strengthen you, help you, and uphold you. Read it slowly and thank God for each one. He is saying it to you.

John 14:27

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

Pray it: Jesus spoke these words to His friends the night before the cross. His peace is not the absence of problems. It is His presence in the middle of them. "Jesus, I receive Your peace. I choose not to let my heart stay troubled."

2 Timothy 1:7

"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

Pray it: The Holy Spirit lives in every believer, and He is not a Spirit of fear. "Holy Spirit, fill me fresh today. Where fear is pushing me around, give me Your power, Your love, and self-discipline."

When the weight feels too heavy to carry

1 Peter 5:7

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

Pray it: Cast is an action word. Picture tossing a heavy bag off your shoulders onto someone much stronger. And the reason is so tender: because He cares for you. "Father, I am handing You this. I trust that You care about me." If you pick it back up an hour later, that is okay. Just hand it over again.

Matthew 11:28

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Pray it: Jesus does not ask you to get it together first. He says come. Come tired, come burdened, come as you are. "Jesus, I am coming to You just like I am. I need Your rest."

Psalm 55:22

"Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken."

Pray it: Sustain means He will hold you up. You may still be in the storm, but you are not in it alone. "Lord, hold me up today."

Romans 8:26

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

Pray it: Some days anxiety leaves you with no words at all. The Holy Spirit is praying for you even when all you can manage is a sigh. Simply sit with God and say, "Help." If you have received the baptism in the Holy Spirit, praying in the Spirit can be a sweet way to keep praying when your own words run out (1 Corinthians 14:14-15).

When you can't sleep

Psalm 4:8

"In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety."

Pray it: Lying down in peace is an act of trust. Pray this as you turn off the light: "Lord, You alone keep me safe. I can rest because You never sleep" (Psalm 121:4).

Psalm 3:5

"I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me."

Pray it: David wrote Psalm 3 when he was running from his own son Absalom (see the heading of Psalm 3). If God could give him sleep in that season, He can help you rest tonight. "Lord, You sustain me. I will wake up tomorrow still held by You."

Proverbs 3:24

"When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet."

Pray it: Keep this one by your bed. If you wake up anxious, whisper it before you reach for your phone. "Lord, make my sleep sweet tonight."

A gentle word about getting help

Praying through Scripture is powerful, and God really does meet us there. It is also wise to reach out when anxiety feels heavy. If worry is keeping you from sleeping, eating, working, or enjoying the people you love, please talk with your doctor or a Christian counselor. God can work through prayer and His Word, and He can also work through the caring, skilled people He places around us. Asking for help is not a lack of faith. It is wisdom.

And if you ever feel unsafe or have thoughts of hurting yourself, please reach out for help right away. Our Emergency Help and Prayer Support page lists who to call.

A simple way to use these verses this week

  • Pick one verse a day. Do not try to memorize all 15. One is plenty.

  • Put it where you will see it. Try a sticky note on the mirror or your phone's lock screen.

  • Pray it morning and night. Use the "Pray it" line above, or just talk to God in your own words.

  • Tell someone. Share your verse with one trusted friend. You were never meant to carry worry alone.

Anxiety can feel loud, but God's love for you is louder. He is near, He is kind, and He is not tired of hearing from you. Bring Him every worry, as many times as it takes.
