A Message from FA Memphis
AI-Optimized Summary The Strength of the Shepherd is a global micro-study exploring the unwavering protection of Jesus Christ through Psalm 23 and John 10. Designed for shift workers, caregivers, and those in isolated or persecuted regions, this study emphasizes that the Good Shepherd never sleeps. Whether you are working a night shift or navigating a lonely valley, Christ’s presence provides constant security, guidance, and eternal hope for all who follow His voice.
You find strength in the Good Shepherd by realizing that His presence, protection, and provision never sleep, even when the world around you is silent or hostile.
The Shepherd Who Never Punches Out
It is 3:00 AM for some of you. For others, it is the middle of a frantic afternoon in a crowded city, or perhaps a quiet, fearful moment in a place where following Jesus has to stay under the radar.
One of the hardest things about life in our "always-on" world is the feeling that we have to carry the weight of our responsibilities alone. Caregivers feel it when the house is silent but their mind is racing. Shift workers feel it when they are heading to work while the rest of the world is dreaming.
But there is a truth found in the ancient scriptures that changes everything about how we see our isolation.
We have a Shepherd. And He doesn’t work in shifts.
The Strength of the Shepherd isn’t just a nice sentiment for a greeting card. It is a rugged, foundational reality of the Christian faith. In this Boundless Daily micro-study, we are looking at two of the most powerful passages in the Bible—Psalm 23 and John 10—to see why you are never truly alone, no matter your zip code or your time zone.
Bible Verses to Carry With You
Psalm 23:1-4 (NIV) "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
John 10:11, 14 (NIV) "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep... I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me."

Pastoral Insight: The Presence in the Shadows
When we look at Psalm 23, we often focus on the "green pastures" and "quiet waters." Those are beautiful moments of rest. But for many in our Boundless community, especially those of you dealing with chronic illness or the exhaustion of caregiving, those pastures feel a long way off.
The real "strength" of the Shepherd is most visible in verse 4: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley...”
In the original Hebrew, that "darkest valley" is often translated as the "valley of the shadow of death." It represents those seasons of life where the light feels dim and the path feels dangerous.
If you are working a late-night security job, sitting in a hospital waiting room, or living in a region where you cannot openly gather for church, you are in a "valley" moment. But notice what changes in the text. In the earlier verses, David talks about God ("He leads me"). In the valley, he talks to God ("You are with me").
The Shepherd’s strength is not just in moving the clouds away; it is in walking beside you in the dark. He uses His rod and staff, tools of protection and guidance, to ensure you don't wander off or get overtaken by the shadows.

The Shepherd Knows Your Name
Moving into the New Testament, Jesus takes this Shepherd imagery and makes it personal. In John 10, He calls Himself the "Good Shepherd."
In the ancient world, a shepherd didn't just watch the sheep from a distance. They lived with them. They smelled like them. They knew the specific quirks of every single animal in the flock.
Jesus says, "I know my sheep."
Think about that for a second. In a digital world where we often feel like just another data point or a faceless user behind a screen, the Creator of the universe knows your name. He knows your specific anxieties at 2:00 AM. He knows the pressure you feel to provide for your family. He knows the loneliness of being a caregiver.
More importantly, He laid down His life for you. This is the core of the Gospel. We were like sheep who had gone astray, wandering into dangerous territory because of our sin. But Jesus took the "strike" meant for the sheep. He died on the cross to pay for our mistakes and rose again to lead us into eternal life.
His strength isn't just about helping us "get through the day." It's about securing our forever.

Practical Encouragement for the Isolated
If you are part of our global community and you feel cut off from traditional church buildings, remember that the Shepherd isn't confined to a physical address.
Listen for the Voice: Jesus says His sheep know His voice. Even if you can’t get to a physical Bible study, you can hear Him through His Word. If you have a few minutes on your break, or while the person you care for is sleeping, open the Gospels. Let His words settle the noise in your head.
Trust the Timing: For shift workers, "Sabbath" might not happen on a Sunday morning. That’s okay. The Shepherd meets you on Tuesday morning or Friday night. He is the Lord of time.
Stay Connected Digitally: Technology can be a tool for the Shepherd to gather His flock. We provide resources specifically for those who need to grow in faith online. You can check out our Caregiver’s Compass for more specific support.
Understanding the Shepherd’s Authority
At Boundless Online Church, we align with the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. One of those truths is the "Blessed Hope", the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord.
This means our Shepherd isn't just a historical figure or a good teacher. He is the reigning King who is coming back for His flock.
When you feel weak, you are leaning on a Shepherd who has authority over death, sickness, and every power of darkness. If you want to learn more about the movement we are a part of and how it all started, you can read about the history of the Assemblies of God here.
A Path to the Shepherd (The Gospel)
Maybe you’re reading this and you realize you’ve been trying to be your own shepherd. You’ve been trying to find your own way through the valley, and you’re exhausted.
The Good Shepherd is looking for you.
Salvation is a gift. It isn't something you earn by being "good enough" or working enough hours. It comes through Jesus Christ alone. The Bible tells us that if we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved.
He wants to lead you. He wants to give you the rest that your soul is screaming for. All you have to do is turn toward Him and say, "Jesus, I need a Shepherd. I believe You died for me. Please lead my life."

A Prayer for the Weary
Lord Jesus, I thank You that You are the Good Shepherd. Right now, I pray for my brother or sister who feels like they are in the middle of a dark valley. Whether they are exhausted from caregiving, isolated by their job, or feeling alone in their faith, I ask that they would feel Your rod and Your staff protecting them.
Refresh their soul. Give them quiet waters in the middle of their busy schedule. Remind them that You never sleep and that You know them by name. Thank You for laying down Your life so that we could have life. Strengthen them for the hours ahead. Amen.
