Boundless Daily: Understanding Our Need for Grace

Welcome to your Boundless Daily micro-study. We are so glad you’ve decided to take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to sit with us and look into the Word. Whether you are catching this on your lunch break, during a quiet moment of caregiving, or in the middle of a late-night shift, know that you are welcome here.

Today, we are diving into something that touches every single one of us. It’s a topic that explains why the world feels a bit broken sometimes and why we often feel a tug in our hearts for something more. We’re talking about "The Fall of Man," which is the fourth Fundamental Truth of the Assemblies of God.

More importantly, we’re talking about why that "fall" makes grace the most beautiful word in the human language.

The Moment Everything Changed

We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and that journey usually starts with understanding where we came from.

In the very beginning, things were different. If you look at the opening chapters of the Bible, you see a picture of perfect harmony. Man and woman were in a direct, face-to-face relationship with God. There was no shame, no heavy lifting of the soul, and no "chasm" between us and our Creator.

But then, something happened. We call it "The Fall."

It wasn’t just a small mistake or a minor "oops." It was a moment where humanity chose to go its own way instead of God's way. This is what we refer to as sin. While the word "sin" can sometimes feel heavy or even judgmental in our modern world, in its simplest form, it means missing the mark. It means choosing a path that leads away from the source of life.

The Assemblies of God Truth #4 reminds us that man was created good and upright. However, by voluntary transgression, humanity fell and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God.

The Chasm We Can’t Bridge

Because of that choice back in the Garden, a gap was created. Think of it like a massive canyon. On one side, you have God, perfect, holy, and full of light. On the other side, you have humanity, struggling, imperfect, and living in a world that is clearly showing its cracks.

Many of us spend our entire lives trying to build a bridge across that canyon. We try to fill the gap with "being a good person," doing volunteer work, or trying to follow a long list of rules. We think that if we can just do enough good, we can earn our way back to that perfect harmony.

But here is the reality: that chasm is simply too wide. Our individual efforts, as well-intentioned as they are, can't reach the other side. Our good works are wonderful for our neighbors and our communities, but they aren't a bridge to God.

This is where the "calm power" of the Gospel comes in. We don't have to build the bridge.

What Exactly Is Grace?

If the Fall is the bad news, Grace is the best news ever told.

Grace is often defined as "unmerited favor." That’s a bit of a "churchy" way of saying that God gives us something we didn't earn and don't deserve. It is His hand reaching across that canyon to pull us over to His side.

In Christian theology, and specifically within our AG roots, we believe that grace is essential because our sinfulness created a barrier that we couldn't break down on our own. Ephesians 2:8-9 puts it clearly: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."

It’s a gift. You don't work for a gift; you just receive it.

Grace for Your Daily Life

At Boundless Online Church, we know that life isn't always lived in a Sunday morning service. Life happens in the hospital waiting rooms, in the quiet of a disability-accessible home, and in the stressful hours of a double shift.

The beauty of grace is that it isn't just for "salvation" (the moment you decide to follow Jesus). It’s for every moment after that, too.

  1. Grace Provides Strength: When you feel like you’ve reached the end of your rope, grace is the strength that keeps you going. It helps you resist the temptations that try to pull you back into old, harmful habits.

  2. Grace Brings Healing: We all carry wounds from our past. Grace acts as a balm for the soul, healing the parts of our will that have been wounded by our own choices or the choices of others.

  3. Grace Offers Discernment: Sometimes our judgment gets clouded by stress or bias. Grace helps us clear the fog so we can see people and situations the way God sees them.

  4. Grace Invites Growth: It doesn't just leave us where we are. Grace "teaches" us. It gently nudges us to live more like Jesus every day, transforming our hearts and how we treat our families.

A Global Invitation

Whether you are in Memphis or on the other side of the world, this need for grace is universal. We all feel the weight of the "Fall." We all see the brokenness in our news feeds and in our own mirrors.

But God’s grace is universally present. We believe in what some call "prevenient grace", the idea that God is already at work in your heart, even before you realize it. He is gently drawing you back to Him, respecting your freedom to say "yes" or "no."

If you’ve been feeling that tug: that sense that there must be something more: that’s grace calling your name.

Taking the Next Step

Understanding our need for grace is the first step toward a life of true freedom. You don't have to have it all figured out. You don't have to "clean up your act" before you come to God. You just have to acknowledge that you need Him.
