Christian Living: How to Mature in Faith When Life Gets Tough?

You mature in faith when life gets tough by learning to stand firm in your convictions, trust God’s character over your circumstances, and look for Jesus’ presence within the trial rather than just looking for an exit. True spiritual maturity isn't about avoiding the fire; it's about being refined by it until you reflect the image of Christ.

If you’ve spent any time in Memphis, you know about "Grit and Grind." It’s a culture of resilience. But there’s a difference between just being "tough" and being spiritually mature. One is about your own strength; the other is about leaning into God’s.

Life has a way of turning up the heat. Maybe it’s a health scare, a relationship that’s crumbling, or the soul-crushing weight of financial stress. In those moments, it feels like the world is demanding you "bow down" to fear, anxiety, or compromise. But there is a better way.

Here are five lessons on how to mature when the furnace gets hot, inspired by the "No Bowing Down" resolve of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

1. Expect the Furnace (Don't Be Shocked by the Heat)

One of the biggest hurdles to maturing in faith is the "Surprise Factor." We often think that if we follow Jesus, life should be a smooth ride down Riverside Drive at sunset. When a trial hits, our first reaction is often, "God, why is this happening to me?"

But the Bible tells us something different. In 1 Peter 4:12 (NKJV), it says: “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you.”

Spiritual maturity begins when we stop being shocked by trouble. In the story of Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn't act surprised when the King threatened them with a furnace. they knew that standing for God in a world that doesn't know Him would eventually lead to a "furnace" moment.

When you normalize trials, you stop wasting energy on "Why me?" and start focusing on "What now, Lord?" Mature faith understands that the furnace isn't a sign of God's absence; it's often the setting for His greatest work.

2. Decide Before the Heat (Pre-emptive Obedience)

Those three young men didn't have a committee meeting at the edge of the furnace to decide if they were going to bow. Their "No" was decided long before the music started playing.

Courage isn't something you "find" in the moment of crisis; it's something you build in the quiet moments of daily obedience. If you haven't decided that God is your ultimate authority when things are going well, you’ll likely bow to whatever feels safest when the pressure hits.

At www.boundlessonlinechurch.org, we talk a lot about spiritual habits. Reading Scripture, joining a virtual small group, and consistent prayer are like "courage training." They anchor your soul so that when the culture screams at you to compromise your integrity or give in to despair, your feet are already planted.

Ask yourself: What have I already decided I will not do, no matter how hot life gets?

3. The "Even If" Faith (Trusting Character over Outcomes)

This is the hinge upon which mature faith swings. In Daniel 3:17-18, the three men told the King:

“If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods.”

Immature faith says, "I’ll trust God if He fixes my problem." Mature faith says, "God is able to fix it, but even if He doesn't, He is still God, He is still good, and I will still serve Him."

This is the "Refining Fire" at work. It burns away our "transactional" relationship with God. When you can say "Even if not," you have reached a level of spiritual maturity that the world cannot touch. You are no longer a hostage to your circumstances because your hope is tied to God's character, not a specific outcome.

If you are struggling with an "Even if" moment right now, we invite you to find prayer at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org. You don't have to carry that weight alone.

4. Find the "Fourth Man" (Presence Over Relief)

The most beautiful part of the Daniel 3 story isn't that they stayed cool, it's who showed up. King Nebuchadnezzar looked into the flames and saw four men walking around, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looked like "a son of the gods."

God didn't keep them out of the fire; He joined them in it.

Often, we pray for God to take us out of the trial. But maturity grows when we realize that the most precious thing we can have isn't relief from the pain, but the presence of the Savior in the midst of it.

When you’re walking through a "Memphis-blues" kind of season, lonely, tired, or hurting, look for Jesus right there in the fire with you. He is the "Fourth Man" who walks through the flames of your grief, your addiction recovery, or your career crisis. Spiritual maturity is the ability to say, "The fire is hot, but I am not alone."

5. Let the Fire Refine (Purpose in the Pain)

In the ancient world, a refiner would put gold into a crucible and turn up the heat. As the gold melted, the impurities (the dross) would rise to the top, and the refiner would skim them off. How did he know when the gold was pure? He knew it was pure when he could see his own reflection in the gold.

Malachi 3:3 says, “He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver.”

God isn't a cosmic bully trying to see how much you can take. He is a Master Refiner. He allows the heat so that the things that don't look like Him, pride, bitterness, self-reliance, can rise to the surface to be cleared away.

When life gets tough, instead of just trying to survive, ask: "Lord, what are You refining in me? What part of my character are You polishing?" When you start cooperating with the fire instead of just complaining about it, you are maturing.

A Prayer for the Fire

Heavenly Father, I thank You that You never leave us or forsake us, especially when the furnace of life gets hot. I pray for the person reading this who feels the heat right now. Strengthen their knees so they won't bow to fear. Give them an "Even if" faith that trusts Your heart when they can't see Your hand. Let them feel the presence of the Fourth Man, Jesus Christ, standing right beside them. Purify us, Lord, until we reflect Your love to a world that needs hope. Amen.
