Christian Living: How to Seek Divine Healing: A Simple Guide

Seeking divine healing begins with understanding that God cares deeply for your wholeness. By approaching Him through faith, rooted in the finished work of Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, you can access the restoration promised in Scripture for your body, mind, and spirit today.

When we talk about healing, we aren't just talking about a lucky break or a medical mystery. We are talking about the deliberate, loving intervention of a Father who sees His children in pain. I want to walk you through what the Bible says about this and how you can position your heart to receive everything God has for you.

What Does the Bible Say?

Before we dive into the "how," we have to look at the "Why." Our foundation must always be the Word of God. Here are a few verses that anchor our understanding of divine healing:

James 5:14-15 (NIV): "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up."

Isaiah 53:5 (NIV): "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."

Matthew 8:17 (NIV): "This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.'"

Psalm 103:2-3 (NIV): "Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases."

Healing and the Atonement

In our walk of faith, we believe that divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. When Jesus died on the cross, He didn’t just deal with our sin problem; He dealt with the consequences of a fallen world, which includes sickness and disease. This is what we call "healing in the atonement."

It’s important to realize that the Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. We believe that deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers. This isn't a "maybe" or a "sometimes" in the heart of God: it is a benefit of being His child. However, we also recognize that we live in a "now but not yet" kingdom. While healing is provided, we still live in mortal bodies awaiting final redemption.

I often tell people that seeking healing isn't about twisting God's arm. It's about aligning our hearts with His already expressed will. When you realize that Jesus already "bore our diseases," it changes how you pray. You aren't begging a reluctant deity; you are claiming a legal right bought by the blood of Christ.

The Power of Holy Spirit Baptism

You cannot talk about divine healing without talking about the Holy Spirit. If Jesus is the Physician, the Holy Spirit is the power that brings the prescription to life in our physical bodies. Many people ask me about "Holy Spirit Baptism" and how it relates to their health and wellness.

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is an empowerment for life and service. It opens up a deeper dimension of prayer: specifically the "prayer of faith" mentioned in James. When we are filled with the Spirit, we are more attuned to the "still small voice" that might direct us toward specific steps for our healing, whether that’s a lifestyle change, a specific person to pray with, or a release of bitterness that has been manifesting as physical stress.

Think of the Holy Spirit as the resident Comforter and Healer within you. He strengthens your inner man so that your outer man can reflect the glory of God. If you haven't yet sought the baptism in the Holy Spirit, I encourage you to do so. It isn't just about "speaking in tongues"; it's about being submerged in the very presence and power of the Living God.

Practical Steps to Seeking Divine Healing

If you are struggling today, I want to give you some practical, simple steps to seek God for your healing. These aren't formulas, but they are biblical patterns that help us engage with God's grace.

1. Ask and Be Specific: Sometimes we pray very vague prayers like, "Lord, bless my health." While that's fine, Jesus often asked people, "What do you want me to do for you?" Be specific about what hurts and what you need. Faith is the substance of things hoped for. Give your faith something specific to latch onto.

2. Call for Prayer: Don't try to go it alone. The Bible tells us to call for the elders or for the community of faith. There is a special "corporate" anointing when believers agree in prayer. If you can’t get to a physical building, reach out to your online church family. Use the prayer wall. Let people stand in the gap with you.

3. Immerse Yourself in the Word: Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. If you are fighting a physical battle, you need to feed your spirit "healing scriptures." Read the accounts of Jesus healing the leper, the blind man, and the woman with the issue of blood. Remind your soul of who He is.

4. Use Your Authority: As a believer, you have been given authority in the name of Jesus. You can speak to the mountain of sickness. You can say, "In the name of Jesus, I command this pain to leave." It might feel strange at first, but you are simply exercising the authority Jesus gave to His followers.

5. Maintain a Heart of Praise: Sickness can be a heavy thief. It tries to steal your joy and your focus. One of the greatest "medicines" is a heart of praise. Even when the symptoms are still there, praise God for being your Healer. Praise shifts your perspective from the problem to the Provider.

Living a Life of Wellness

While we believe in the miraculous, we also believe in being good stewards of the "temples" God gave us. Divine healing and common sense go hand in hand. I always tell our community that God can heal a heart attack, but He also wants to give you the wisdom to eat well and manage stress so you don't have one in the first place.

This includes taking care of our mental and spiritual intake. In a world full of noise, we need to be careful about what we allow into our "eye gates" and "ear gates." For our families, I always recommend using tools like VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way” to keep our entertainment clean and life-giving. If we are filling our minds with darkness all day, it's much harder to walk in the light of God’s peace. I also suggest using Bark and Covenant Eyes for online safety: protecting your peace is a huge part of staying spiritually and emotionally healthy.

Wellness is a holistic journey. It’s about the prayer of faith, but it’s also about the Sabbath rest. It’s about the Holy Spirit’s power, but it’s also about the community of believers who check in on you. Never feel like using medical help means you lack faith. God often works through the hands of doctors and the wisdom of science just as much as He works through a miracle. All healing is divine healing because God is the source of all life.

When Healing Seems Delayed

This is the part that is hard to talk about, but we must. What happens when you’ve prayed, you’ve fasted, and you’re still hurting? Does it mean God isn't listening? Absolutely not.

We see in Scripture that even great heroes of faith faced seasons of "not yet." The key is to stay in the posture of trust. Don't let a delay become a denial in your heart. Sometimes God is doing a deeper work in us during the waiting: building our character, deepening our prayer life, or preparing us for a testimony that will help thousands of others.

You are never forgotten, you are never alone, and you are deeply loved by God. Your worth is not defined by your health, but by your identity as a child of the King. Keep seeking, keep knocking, and keep believing. He is faithful.

A Prayer for Healing

Lord Jesus, I come to You right now on behalf of the person reading this. You know the pain they carry, the diagnosis they’ve received, or the exhaustion they feel. I thank You that You are the Great Physician. By Your stripes, we are healed. I ask for Your Holy Spirit to move right now, bringing comfort and restorative power to their body. Strengthen their faith and give them a peace that passes all understanding. We trust You, Lord. Amen.
