Christian Living: Is the Refining Fire Bad? What the Bible Says About Finding Strength in Trials

We’ve all had those weeks: or maybe those years: where it feels like the heat has been turned up just a little too high. You’re navigating a health scare, a sudden job loss, or a relationship that feels like it’s fraying at the edges. In those moments, it’s easy to feel like the fire is there to consume you. You might find yourself asking, "God, why is this happening? Did I do something wrong? Is this fire meant to destroy me?"
If you’re feeling the heat today, I want to start by telling you something very simple: You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten. And most importantly, you are never alone in the heat.
At Boundless Online Church, we meet people every day who are walking through seasons of intense pressure. Whether you are joining us from Memphis, Tennessee, or from halfway across the world, the question remains the same: Is the fire bad?
The Bible gives us a surprising answer. The fire isn't there to burn you up; it’s there to bring out the gold.
The Purpose of the Refiner’s Fire
In the book of Malachi, the Bible uses a powerful image to describe how God works in our lives. It says, "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify... and refine them like gold and silver" (Malachi 3:3).
Think about a silver refiner for a moment. He doesn't just toss the metal into the flames and walk away. He sits. He watches. He stays close. A refiner knows that if the heat is too low, the impurities won't separate. If it’s too high, the metal will be damaged. He stays until he can see his own reflection in the surface of the silver.
This is exactly how Jesus works with us. The "refining fire" isn't a sign of His absence; it’s actually a sign of His intense focus on your life. He is removing the things that hold you back: the fear, the self-reliance, the old wounds: so that His image can shine through you. The fire isn't "bad." It’s purposeful. It’s the process of becoming who you were truly meant to be.

No Bowing Down: The Secret to Strength
When the heat gets intense, the temptation is always to "bow down" to something else to make the pain stop. We might bow to bitterness, to unhealthy coping mechanisms, or to the pressure to conform to what the world says we should be.
In Daniel 3, we see the ultimate example of "no bowing down." Three young men: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: stood before a literal fiery furnace. The king told them to bow to a golden idol or burn. Their response is one of the most powerful declarations of faith in all of Scripture:
"Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace... but if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods" (Daniel 3:17-18).
They didn't have a guarantee of safety. They had a guarantee of God's character. They decided that standing with God in the fire was better than sitting on a throne without Him.
The Fourth Man in the Fire
What happened next changed history. They were thrown into the furnace, heated seven times hotter than usual. But when the king looked in, he didn't see three men burning. He saw four men walking around, unbound and unharmed. He remarked that the fourth looked "like the Son of God."
This is the promise for you today: When you refuse to bow to your circumstances, you discover that Jesus is already in the fire waiting for you. He doesn't always keep us from the furnace, but He always meets us in it.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, we invite you to find a community that will stand with you. You can join our virtual small groups at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org to find people who will pray with you and remind you of the truth when the flames feel hot.

How to Find Strength When Life Gets Hot
So, how do we practically find strength when we are in the middle of a trial? How do we adopt that "no bowing down" mindset?
1. Shift Your Perspective
Stop asking "Why is this happening to me?" and start asking "What is God doing in me?" When we realize that trials are tools for refinement rather than weapons of destruction, our anxiety begins to lift. You aren't being punished; you are being prepared.
2. Stay Close to the Word
Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. When the world is screaming that you won't make it, you need to hear what God says about you. You can explore our "Verses for How You Feel" section at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org/verses-for-how-you-feel to find specific scriptures for anxiety, grief, and strength.
3. Connect with a Global Community
Isolation is the enemy's favorite playground. When you’re in a trial, you need a "cloud of witnesses" around you. At Boundless Online Church, we offer live-streamed services every weekend where you can interact with a global family. We bridge the gap between our local roots at FA Memphis and our worldwide congregation. Join us for our 10:30 AM CST live service this Sunday at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org/sunday-live-worship.
4. Listen to Encouraging Resources
What you put into your ears matters. We highly recommend the Boundless Bible Study Podcast (formerly Connected Faith) at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org/connected-faith-podcast. Listening to deep dives into Scripture during your commute or while doing dishes can help steady your heart in the heat.
A Prayer for the Person in the Fire
Lord, I lift up the person reading this who feels like they are in the middle of a furnace. I thank You that You are the Fourth Man in the fire with them right now. Give them the strength to stand tall and the grace to not bow down to fear or despair. Purify their heart, burn away the dross, and let them come out of this season shining like pure gold. Remind them that they are not alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.

You Are Never Alone
Whether you are in a hospital bed in Memphis, a high-rise in New York, or a home in London, the refining fire is doing a work that will result in "praise, glory, and honor" (1 Peter 1:7). You don't have to be perfect; you just have to stay in the hands of the Refiner.
If you need a place to belong while you navigate these trials, Boundless Online Church is here for you 24/7. We are a digital church designed for those who can’t make it to a physical building but still deeply need the presence of God and the warmth of community.
