Christian Living: The Divine Art of Doing Nothing: Why 2026 is the Year of the Digital Sabbath

What does the Bible say about a digital sabbath? While the term "digital" isn't in the ancient text, the principle of the Sabbath is a divine command for total rest. A digital sabbath is an intentional season of rest from screens to reconnect with God’s presence, moving from burnout to spiritual vitality by reclaiming our attention for Him.
Bible Verses
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” , Genesis 2:2-3
“Then he said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.’” , Mark 2:27
“Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God.” , Exodus 20:9-10
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” , Matthew 11:28
The Soul in the Machine
It’s 2026, and if you’re like me, your life is more connected than ever. We have high-speed everything, notifications for our notifications, and a world of information at our fingertips. But as I look at the landscape of our hearts today, I see a common thread: we are exhausted. We are digitally drained. We are "scrolling but never satisfied." As your pastor for Boundless Online outreach, I want you to know that you are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten. Even when you feel like just another data point in an algorithm, God sees the real you.
I believe 2026 is the year we must reclaim the "Divine Art of Doing Nothing." Now, I don't mean being lazy. I mean the holy, intentional act of stepping away from the glow of the screen to stand in the light of the Son. Whether you are searching for an online church Memphis TN or tuning in from across the globe, the need for a Digital Sabbath is universal. We were not created to process the world’s grief, politics, and highlight reels 24/7. We were created for communion.

The Science of Stillness (Tuesday Truths)
Since today is Tuesday, let’s look at some "Tuesday Truths" regarding how God designed our brains. Science is finally catching up to what the Bible has said for millennia: we need rest. Research into neuroplasticity shows that our brains are physically changing due to constant digital stimulation. Our "attention muscles" are atrophying because we never allow ourselves to be bored. Did you know that boredom is actually the birthplace of creativity and deep reflection? When we are constantly "inputting" data from our phones, we lose the "output" of original thought and spiritual meditation.
The Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. This means we trust that God’s design for the human mind includes a rhythm of work and rest. When we ignore the Sabbath, we aren't just breaking a rule; we are breaking ourselves. High levels of blue light and the dopamine hits from social media keep our nervous systems in a state of high alert. This leads to the "Anxious Heart" segment of our community, people overwhelmed by headlines and doomscrolling. A Digital Sabbath allows your cortisol levels to drop and your spirit to rise.
Moving from Burnout to Vitality
For the busy caregiver, the overworked shift worker, or the lonely soul behind a screen, the thought of "doing nothing" might feel like a luxury you can't afford. But I want to challenge that. When we practice a Digital Sabbath, we are telling God, "I trust You to run the world while I rest." It is an act of faith. It’s saying that my worth isn't tied to my productivity or my online presence.
If you are homebound or struggling with your mental health, the digital world is often your primary connection to the outside. At Boundless, we love that! We are a digital church for a reason. However, even good things can become weights if we never set them down. Use your screen time for spiritual growth, like our live worship from First Assembly Memphis, and then, intentionally, turn it off. Go for a walk. Look at the sky. Breathe. Reconnecting with the physical world God made is a form of worship.

Online Safety and the Home
As we talk about the digital world, we must also talk about safety. To protect the "Sabbath space" in your home, I highly recommend using tools that keep the environment clean and focused on Christ. When you do watch movies, use services like VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way” to filter out content that disrupts your peace. To keep your family’s hearts and minds protected from the darker corners of the web, look into accountability and safety tools like Bark and Covenant Eyes. These aren't just about "rules", they are about creating a sanctuary where rest is possible.
How to Start Your Digital Sabbath
1. **Pick Your Time:** It doesn't have to be a full 24 hours at first. Maybe it’s Sunday afternoon after our live stream, or a Saturday morning. 2. **The "Out of Sight" Rule:** Put your devices in a drawer. If you can see it, your brain is still "on." 3. **Plan for Presence:** Have a book ready, a journal, or a walking path. For my Memphis friends, maybe find a quiet spot in one of our local parks to just sit and be. 4. **Invite Others:** Tell your family or your small group at Boundless what you’re doing so they can support you.

A Pastoral Note to the Hesitant
I know some of you are "church-hurt" or quietly searching for Jesus from behind a screen because it feels safer there. I want you to know that the Digital Sabbath isn't about isolating you further, it’s about preparing your heart for deeper connection. When you clear the digital clutter, you might find that the "questions" you have for God start to receive answers. You aren't alone in this. We are a bridge from isolation to connection.
The Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails, and those guardrails are meant to keep you on the path to life, joy, and peace. You were made for more than a screen. You were made for the Creator.
A Prayer for Your Rest
Lord, I lift up the person reading this right now. You know their heart, their exhaustion, and the weight they carry. I ask that You would give them the courage to step away from the noise and into Your silence. Help them to see that their value is found in You, not in their "likes" or their "links." Protect their mind from anxiety and their heart from loneliness. Grant them a true Digital Sabbath this week, where they can hear Your whisper saying, "You are seen, you are loved, you are never alone." Amen.
