Christian Living: The Secret to Paying Off Debt (and Staying Out of It)

Financial stress is a unique kind of weight. It’s the sort of burden that doesn't just sit in your wallet, it follows you to bed, shadows your conversations with your spouse, and colors the way you see the future. If you’ve ever felt like your paycheck is spoken for before it even hits your account, or if the "minimum payment" cycle feels like a mountain you’ll never finish climbing, you aren't alone.
We live in a culture designed to keep us in debt. From "buy now, pay later" buttons to the constant pressure to upgrade our lives, the world tells us that the secret to happiness is just one more transaction away. But for many of us, those transactions have become a chain.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that God cares about every part of your life, including your bank account. In fact, Jesus spoke about money and stewardship more than almost any other topic. Why? Because He knew that where your treasure is, your heart will be also.
If you are tired of being "owned" by your debt, there is a way out. It’s not a magic trick, and it’s not a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s a spiritual and practical shift that begins with the heart.
The Weight of the "Invisible Chain"
The Bible doesn't mince words when it comes to debt. Proverbs 22:7 tells us a sobering truth: "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender."
When we carry heavy debt, we lose a certain amount of freedom. We lose the freedom to give generously when we see a need. We lose the freedom to take risks for the Gospel. We even lose the mental and emotional freedom to be fully present with our families because we are so preoccupied with the numbers on the screen.

Debt often feels like an invisible chain. You can’t see it, but you can feel the tug every time you want to step forward. Perhaps the hardest part isn't even the money itself, it’s the shame that comes with it. Many people stop coming to church or distance themselves from community because they feel like they’ve failed.
If that’s you, please hear this: Your debt does not define your worth. You are loved, you are seen, and you are not forgotten. God is the God of new beginnings, and He wants to help you walk into a life of peace and stewardship.
The Biblical Secret: Stewardship Over Ownership
The "secret" to paying off debt isn't just about finding a better interest rate (though that helps). The real secret is shifting your mindset from ownership to stewardship.
In the world's eyes, we own our money. We earned it, so we can do whatever we want with it. But in the Kingdom of God, we are managers, not owners. Psalm 24:1 says, "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it."
When we realize that every dollar we have is actually a tool entrusted to us by God, our perspective changes. We stop asking, "How can I get what I want?" and start asking, "How can I manage these resources to honor God and find peace?"
Step 1: Surrender and Seek Wisdom
The first step isn't opening an Excel sheet; it's opening your heart in prayer. James 1:5 promises that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God, and He will give it to us generously.
Before you make a plan, sit down and invite Jesus into the room. Acknowledge the stress. Confess any mistakes you’ve made without fear of condemnation. Ask for the self-discipline and the "eyes to see" the path forward.
If you need someone to pray with you during this first step, our team is available 24/7. You can reach out for prayer support anytime at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org.
Step 2: The Honest Inventory
You cannot defeat an enemy you haven't identified. Most of us avoid looking at the "total" number because it’s too painful. But the truth will set you free.
Take a notebook: a clean, physical notebook often works best: and list everything.
Credit cards
Student loans
Medical bills
Personal loans
Car payments
Write down the balance and the interest rate. This isn't an exercise in shame; it's an exercise in clarity. Once the numbers are on paper, they lose some of their power. They are just numbers, and with God’s help, numbers can change.

Step 3: The "Smallest Win" Strategy (The Snowball)
While there are many technical ways to pay off debt, the most effective way for most people is the Debt Snowball method. This focuses on momentum rather than just math.
List your debts from smallest balance to largest balance.
Pay the minimum on everything except the smallest debt.
Attack that smallest debt with every extra dollar you can find.
Once it's gone, take the entire payment you were making on that debt and move it to the next one on the list.
Why does this work? Because you need a win. When you see that first $300 credit card disappear, your brain realizes, "I can do this." That momentum is what carries you through the larger balances later on.
Step 4: Build a "Wall of Protection"
Unexpected car repairs or medical bills are the main reasons people fall back into debt. Before you get too far into your payoff plan, try to save a small emergency fund: even just $1,000.
This is your "Wall of Protection." It prevents life’s surprises from becoming life’s disasters. It allows you to stay on the path without having to reach for the credit card again the moment something goes wrong.
Staying Free: The Heart of Stewardship
Paying off debt is half the battle. Staying out of it is the other half. This is where we learn the beauty of contentment.
Hebrews 13:5 tells us, "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'"
Debt is often a symptom of trying to find security or status in things rather than in Christ. As you grow in your faith through resources like our virtual Bible studies at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org, you’ll find that the "need" for the next big purchase begins to fade. You'll realize that the most valuable things in life: peace, purpose, and relationship with God: can't be bought on credit.

You Don’t Have to Walk This Path Alone
Financial struggle thrives in the dark. When we keep our struggles secret, they grow. But when we bring them into the light of community, they begin to shrink.
One of the best ways to stay motivated is to be part of a community that understands your values. At Boundless Online Church, we host online small groups and mentoring where you can find encouragement and accountability. Whether you are in Memphis, Tennessee, or halfway across the globe, you can find a seat at our table.

A Prayer for Your Financial Journey
Lord, I come to You today feeling the weight of these financial burdens. You know the numbers, and You know the anxiety they cause in my heart. I ask for Your wisdom and Your peace. Help me to be a wise steward of the resources You’ve given me. Give me the strength to make hard choices and the patience to wait for the results. Thank You for being my Provider and for promising never to leave me. I trust You with my future. In Jesus' name, Amen.
