Pentecostalism is a Spirit-filled Christian movement that emphasizes a personal, experiential relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe in the Bible’s authority, salvation through Jesus Christ, and the ongoing power of the Holy Spirit to heal, guide, and empower believers today.
Rooted in the 901, Reaching for the Nations
If you’ve driven through Cordova, Bartlett, or the heart of Memphis, you’ve likely seen many different types of churches. You might have wondered, “What makes an Assemblies of God (AG) church unique?” or “What does it actually mean to be Pentecostal?”
At First Assembly Memphis, we aren't just a building on the map; we are a family. We are a multi-generational community rooted in the 901, committed to seeing lives transformed by the power of the Gospel. Whether you are a lifelong Memphian or someone joining us from across the globe through Boundless Online Church, understanding our foundations helps us grow together.
Pentecostalism isn't about a specific "look" or a complicated set of rules. It is about a vibrant, living faith that believes the same God who performed miracles in the book of Acts is still at work in the Mid-South today.
The Four Cardinal Doctrines: Our Spiritual Compass
While we hold to 16 Fundamental Truths, there are four "Cardinal Doctrines" that serve as the pillars of our faith. These four truths shape everything we do, from our Sunday morning worship in Memphis to our digital discipleship groups online.
Doctrine | What It Means for You |
Salvation | Through Jesus, you are forgiven, restored, and given eternal life. |
Baptism in the Holy Spirit | An empowering experience that gives you strength to live for God and serve others. |
Divine Healing | We believe God cares about your physical and emotional pain and still heals today. |
The Second Coming | We live with the hopeful expectation that Jesus will return for His people. |

Defining the Terms: Faith Made Simple
Sometimes church language can feel like a secret code. At FA Memphis, we want to make the beauty of God's Word accessible to everyone. Here are a few "AG 101" terms you might hear during a sermon or a Bible study:
Salvation: This is the starting point. It is the act of being saved from the power and penalty of sin. It isn’t something we earn; it is a free gift from God received through faith in Jesus Christ. Repentance: This literally means to "change your mind" or turn around. It is a sincere turning away from sin and toward God, asking for His forgiveness and following His path. Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Following salvation, this is an experience where the Holy Spirit fills a believer, providing spiritual power for witnessing and holy living. In the AG tradition, we believe the initial physical evidence of this is speaking in other tongues, as seen in the book of Acts. Sanctification: This is a fancy word for a lifelong journey. It is the process of being set apart for God and becoming more like Jesus every day in our thoughts, words, and actions. Divine Healing: This is the belief that God’s power can bring physical and emotional healing to the body and mind. We pray for the sick because we believe God is still our Great Physician.
Why Memphis Needs a Spirit-Empowered Church
Memphis is a city of soul, history, and deep community. But it’s also a city that knows struggle. From Cordova to Downtown, families are looking for more than just "religion." They are looking for a community where they can find real hope and authentic connection.
The Pentecostal faith is uniquely suited for the 901 because it is a "hope-forward" faith. We believe that no matter what your past looks like, God’s grace is bigger. We believe that even in the toughest neighborhoods or the darkest seasons of life, the Holy Spirit provides the comfort and courage to keep going.
Our history in Memphis is a testament to this. We have seen generations of families find their footing in Christ, students find their purpose, and the lonely find a home.

FA Memphis & Boundless: A Dual Pathway to Connection
We believe the Kingdom of God is bigger than one building. That’s why we operate with a dual-pathway approach:
Local (FA Memphis): For those in Memphis, Cordova, Bartlett, or Arlington, we invite you to experience the warmth of in-person community. From sports leagues to Wednesday night dinners, there is a place for you here.
Global (Boundless Online Church): If you aren't in the 901 area, or if your schedule or circumstances keep you from meeting in person, Boundless is your digital home. You get the same biblically-anchored teaching and Spirit-filled worship, accessible from anywhere in the world.
5 Practical Ways to Grow Your Faith This Week
If you are new to Pentecostalism or just starting your journey with Jesus, here are five simple steps you can take today:
Read the Book of Acts: It’s the "action movie" of the Bible. It shows exactly how the early church was empowered by the Spirit.
Ask for the Spirit’s Guidance: Before you start your commute on I-40 or jump into a Zoom meeting, ask the Holy Spirit to lead your words and actions.
Find a Small Group: Faith isn't a solo sport. Check out our Heart to Heart ladies' ministry or our Prime Time Cruzers for seniors.
Practice Gratitude: Pentecostalism is rooted in worship. Take five minutes to thank God for what He has done in your life this week.
Reach Out for Prayer: You don't have to carry your burdens alone.

A Community Where You Belong
The beauty of the Assemblies of God is that we are a global family with a local heart. Whether you are looking for a church in Memphis that feels like family or a digital community that supports your spiritual growth, you belong here.
Pentecostalism isn't a label to wear; it's a life to be lived. It’s about the joy of knowing Jesus and the power of the Spirit working through you to change the world around you.
