Christian Living: Why the Refining Fire Will Change Your Faith: How Do We Grow in Hard Seasons?

We grow in hard seasons because God uses the "heat" of our trials not to consume us, but to consume the things that hold us back. In the Bible, this is called the "refining fire", a process where heat is applied to gold to bring impurities to the surface so they can be removed. When you feel the heat rising in your life, it isn't a sign that God has left you; it’s a sign that He is doing His most beautiful work in you.
The Heat is Rising: Why Does Faith Feel Hard Right Now?
If you’ve ever spent a summer in Memphis, you know that the heat is no joke. It’s heavy, it’s constant, and it makes everything feel a little bit harder. Sometimes, life feels exactly like a humid July afternoon on the Bluff City riverfront, you’re doing your best to keep moving, but the weight of the world feels like it’s pressing down on your chest.
Maybe you’re walking through a season of loss, or perhaps the "heat" is coming from a job that’s draining your spirit. You might be facing a health crisis, or the quiet, nagging feeling that you’re just... stuck. We often pray for the fire to go out. We ask God to turn down the temperature. We wonder why a loving Father would let His children sit in the furnace.
The pain of the fire is real. It’s okay to say, "This hurts." It’s okay to feel like you’re at your breaking point. But here is the truth we often miss: The fire is not your enemy. The fire is your forge.

The Lesson of the Furnace: No Bowing Down
One of the most powerful stories of the refining fire is found in the book of Daniel. Three young men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, lived in a culture that demanded they bow down to an idol. The king made it clear: "Bow down or burn."
Their response changed history. They didn't panic. They didn't compromise. They told the king, "Our God is able to save us... but even if He doesn't, we will not bow."
They were thrown into a furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. But when the king looked in, he didn't see three dead men. He saw four men walking around, and the fourth looked like "a son of the gods."
In the "No Bowing Down" moments of our lives, we learn three major things:
The fire only burns the ropes. The only thing Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego lost in that fire were the ropes that bound their hands. Often, God uses trials to burn away our addictions, our false identities, and our dependencies on things other than Him.
You are never alone in the heat. Jesus doesn't just wait for you to get out of the fire; He meets you in the fire.
Your testimony is forged in the furnace. People didn't notice the three men when they were just standing in the crowd. They noticed them when they were walking in the flames.
5 Ways to Grow When Life Gets Hot
How do we actually navigate these seasons without losing our minds, or our faith? Here are five practical takeaways to help you lean into the refining process:
Change Your Question: Instead of asking, "Why is this happening to me?" try asking, "What is the fire revealing in me?" The heat brings "dross" (impurities) to the surface. It might be revealing a hidden pride, a lack of trust, or a strength you didn't know you had.
Refuse to Bow to Fear: Hard seasons demand that we bow to the "idols" of anxiety and despair. Like the three men in Daniel, decide today that your worship belongs to God alone, regardless of the temperature.
Look for the "Fourth Man": Shift your focus from the flames to the Presence. Spend time in prayer at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org and ask the Holy Spirit to show you how Jesus is walking beside you right now.
Lean into Community: Refining gold is a delicate process, and so is refining a soul. You weren't meant to sit in the furnace alone. Find a virtual small group or a Christian mentor at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org to walk through the heat with you.
Trust the Refiner’s Hands: A refiner knows exactly how hot the fire needs to be and exactly when to take the gold out. God is not a reckless arsonist; He is a Master Craftsman. He won't let you stay in a second longer than necessary.

Scripture for the Season
When the world feels like it’s closing in, let these words from Scripture be the ground you stand on:
Malachi 3:3 – "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver."
1 Peter 1:7 – "These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith, of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire, may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."
Isaiah 43:2 – "When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you."
A Pastoral Insight: The View from the Refiner
There’s an old story about a woman watching a silversmith. She asked, "How do you know when the silver is pure?" The smith smiled and said, "That’s easy. When I can see my own reflection in it."
That is God’s goal for you. He isn't trying to punish you. He is working to clear away the grit and the grime of the world until, when He looks at your life, He sees the reflection of His Son, Jesus.
If you’re in Memphis, or anywhere across the globe, and you feel like the fire is just too much today, please know that you are not forgotten. You are seen. You are loved. And there is a purpose for this pain.
