Prayer & Hope: Does God Still Do Miracles in the 901 Today?

Yes, God is still performing miracles in Memphis (the 901) today. Through physical healing, deliverance from addiction, and restored relationships, the power of Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever, continues to transform lives in our local community and through our global digital outreach.

Whether you are walking the streets of Cordova, driving through Bartlett, or joining us from the other side of the globe via Boundless Online Church, the question of the supernatural often sits at the edge of our faith. We see the headlines of struggle, the weight of anxiety, and the grip of addiction in our city, and we wonder: Is the God of the Bible still moving here?

At First Assembly Memphis, we don't just believe in miracles because of ancient texts; we believe in them because we see them in the "901" every single week.

What Is a Miracle, Really?

Before we dive into the stories of what God is doing in Memphis, we need to define our terms. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we hold to the "continuationist" view, meaning we believe the gifts of the Holy Spirit, including healing and miracles, did not stop when the last Apostle died. They are for us, right now.

Definition Block: Divine Healing Divine healing is an integral part of the Gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers (Isaiah 53:4,5; Matthew 8:16,17; James 5:14-16).
Definition Block: Repentance Repentance is a sincere "turning away" from sin and turning toward God. It is the first step toward the greatest miracle of all: Salvation.

The Theology of the "Same God"

The foundation for our hope in the 901 is found in the character of God. Malachi 3:6 tells us, "I the Lord do not change." Hebrews 13:8 echoes this: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."

If Jesus healed the blind in Galilee, He can heal the spiritually and physically blind in Memphis. If He broke the chains of the possessed in the New Testament, He can break the chains of addiction in Shelby County today. We serve a God who isn't limited by our zip code or our modern technology.

The "Memphis Miracle": A History of Reconciliation

While many seek physical signs, one of the most famous modern miracles in our city wasn't a blind man seeing, but a divided church healing. In October 1994, right here in Memphis at Mason Temple, leaders from across the Pentecostal world met for what is now known as the "Memphis Miracle."

For decades, racial divisions had separated Pentecostal fellowships. During this meeting, a white Assemblies of God pastor washed the feet of a Black bishop from the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), asking for forgiveness for the sin of racism and division. This act of repentance sparked a movement of reconciliation that fundamentally changed our fellowship.

It reminds us that God's miracles often target the heart and the community before they target the body. In a city like Memphis, where history is deep and wounds can be old, the miracle of racial reconciliation is a testament to the Holy Spirit's power to do what politics and programs cannot.

Sin vs. Grace: Overcoming Addiction and Anxiety

In the 901, we face real battles. Addiction to substances, the crippling weight of anxiety, and the darkness of depression are "modern giants." But at First Assembly Memphis, we view these through the lens of Sin vs. Grace.

Sin isn't just a list of "bad things"; it’s a condition of being separated from God's best for our lives. But Grace is the supernatural enablement to overcome what we could never beat on our own.

We have seen people walk into our Cordova campus bound by years of substance abuse and, through the power of prayer and the support of a Spirit-filled community, walk out into a life of sobriety and purpose. That is a miracle.

5 Ways to Position Yourself for a Miracle

While we cannot "command" God to do our bidding, we can certainly position our hearts to receive what He has for us. If you are in Memphis, Bartlett, or joining us online from afar, consider these steps:

  1. Ask with Boldness: James 4:2 says, "You do not have because you do not ask God." Don't be afraid to be specific.

  2. Anchor in the Word: Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Read the miracle stories in the Gospels to build your expectation.

  3. Seek Community: Whether it's our in-person services or our digital small groups, don't pray alone.

  4. Practice Repentance: Sometimes, a miracle is blocked by unconfessed sin or bitterness. Clearing the heart opens the way for Grace.

  5. Trust the Timing: God is not a vending machine. He is a Father. Sometimes the miracle is the strength He gives you through the trial.

Is There a Church Near Me That Believes This?

If you’re searching for a "church near me" in Memphis, Cordova, Arlington, or Bartlett that still believes in the power of the Holy Spirit, we invite you to come home to First Assembly Memphis.

We aren't interested in being a "religious museum." We want to be a hospital for the hurting and a lighthouse for the lost. Whether you need prayer for a physical ailment or you're seeking freedom from anxiety, you don't have to carry that burden by yourself.

For those outside the 901, our Boundless Online Church community offers the same pastoral care, Spirit-filled worship, and belief in miracles, regardless of where you are on the map.

Life Takeaway

God is not finished with Memphis. He is not finished with you. A miracle isn't just a "magic trick" to make life easier; it is a signpost pointing toward the reality of God's Kingdom. If you are struggling today, remember that the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in us.

Do you believe that God can do the impossible in your life today?
