A Message from FA Memphis
Hi there. I’m Dr. Layne McDonald, the Online and Connection Pastor here at Boundless Online Church.
If you’re reading this, you probably know how hard it can be to get the whole family in one room at the same time, let alone getting everyone to focus on a Bible study. Between soccer practice, late work shifts, and the endless pull of social media, "family time" often feels like a memory rather than a reality.
But what if we stopped fighting the screens and started using them for the Kingdom?
At Boundless Online Church, we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. We believe that the Great Commission doesn’t stop at your front door, and it certainly doesn't stop at the edge of your smartphone screen. Leading a digital Bible study with your family is one of the most practical ways to fulfill the command in Deuteronomy 6 to "talk of them when you sit in your house."
In this guide, I want to show you how to turn your family's digital habits into a source of spiritual growth.
Why Go Digital for Family Discipleship?
You might be wondering, "Why not just use a physical Bible?"
Don’t get me wrong, I love the feel of a real Bible in my hands. But we live in a world where our phones are always within reach. By moving your family study into the digital space, you are meeting your kids, your spouse, and even your extended family exactly where they are.
Digital tools allow for:
Consistency: It’s hard to lose a digital reading plan.
Accessibility: You can study together even if one parent is traveling or working a night shift.
Engagement: Modern apps use video, audio, and interactive plans that can keep younger minds engaged.

Choosing the Right Tools
The first step in leading a successful digital study is picking the right platform. You don't need to be a tech genius to do this. There are incredible resources designed specifically for families.
1. The YouVersion Bible App
This is the gold standard. It’s free, and it has over 1,000 reading plans specifically for families. You can create a "Plan with Friends" (or in this case, family) where everyone reads the same passage and can comment on it throughout the day. This is perfect for families with busy schedules. You might read the verse at 10:00 AM, and your teen might read it at 3:00 PM, but you can still see each other's thoughts.
2. Bible Gateway
If you want to do a deeper dive into different translations, Bible Gateway is a fantastic tool. It offers over 200 versions of the Bible, which is great for comparing how different scholars translated a specific verse.
3. Video-Based Studies
Sometimes, seeing is believing. Using video-based devotionals can be a game-changer for younger children or visual learners. We often talk about how to use these tools securely in our post on Safe Tech for the Gospel.
Structuring Your Time: The "Word Hand" Framework
One of the best ways to ensure your family isn't just "skimming" the Word is to use a structured method. I often recommend the Word Hand framework, which uses five fingers to represent five ways to engage with Scripture:
Hearing: Use the audio function on your Bible app during breakfast or while driving the kids to school.
Reading: Set aside 10 minutes where everyone reads the digital plan on their own device.
Studying: Use the search tools in your app to look up the historical context of a passage.
Memorizing: Use the "Verse of the Day" feature to pick a family memory verse.
Meditation: Spend a few minutes in silence (yes, it's possible!) thinking about what God is saying to you personally.

Practical Tips for Every Age Group
A digital study looks different depending on who is at the table.
For Families with Young Children
Keep it short and visual. Use the Bible App for Kids, which has interactive stories. Your goal here isn't a 30-minute sermon; it’s building the habit of turning to God’s Word daily. Check out our Daily Parent Devotionals for more age-appropriate ideas.
For Families with Teens
Teens value authenticity and "the why." Instead of telling them what a verse means, ask them. Use the digital plans to prompt questions like, "How does this apply to what you saw on social media today?" You can also explore tougher topics together, like the questions we tackle in our 7 Life Questions Everyone’s Afraid to Ask series.
For Long-Distance or Busy Families
If you have a child in college or a spouse working a late shift, digital Bible study is a lifeline. You can use our Bible Study Club to find resources that work for adults and young adults alike, keeping everyone connected through the Spirit, no matter the distance.

Overcoming Digital Distractions
The biggest irony of a digital Bible study is that the tool you’re using to read the Word is the same tool that sends you TikTok notifications.
To lead effectively, you have to set boundaries.
Turn on "Do Not Disturb": Make it a family rule that for the 15 or 20 minutes of study, all other notifications are silenced.
Focus on the Text: Use the "Focus Mode" found in many modern smartphones to hide distracting apps.
Model the Behavior: If you're checking your email while your child is reading a verse, they’ll notice. Be present.
Making it a Habit
Consistency is better than intensity. It is much better to have a five-minute digital devotion every morning than a two-hour study once a month that everyone dreads.
Try scheduling a recurring "drop" for your family study. At Boundless, we find that 8:00 AM works well for many families to set the tone for the day. If you're a night-shift worker or a late riser, find the "Faith at 3 AM" rhythm that works for your household. You can read more about why God never sleeps on the night shift here.

Growing Together in the Spirit
At the heart of the Assemblies of God tradition is the belief in a Spirit-empowered life. When you lead your family in study, you aren't just reading a book; you are inviting the Holy Spirit into your home.
Don't be afraid to pray for the baptism of the Holy Spirit during your family time. If your kids have questions about spiritual gifts, we have resources like Gifts of the Spirit to help guide those conversations.
Remember, you don't have to have all the answers. The goal is to "meet Jesus" together.

A Prayer for Your Family
Lord, thank You for the technology that allows us to stay connected to Your Word. We ask that You bless this family as they seek You together. Open their eyes to see Your truth and their hearts to receive Your love. May their home be a place of peace and may their digital devices be tools for Your glory. Amen.
