Daily Parent Devotional: Teaching Your Kids About Faith When You’re Busy (March 3, 2026)

Life doesn’t usually slow down to give us a "perfect" moment for a Bible study.

If you’re reading this, you might be a shift worker just getting home while the kids are waking up. Maybe you’re a parent with a 9-to-5 who spends the evening playing taxi driver for sports and errands. Or perhaps you’re a caregiver who feels like the day is just one long cycle of meeting everyone else’s needs.

Whatever your schedule looks like, there is a common pressure we all feel: the desire to raise our children to know Jesus, clashing with a calendar that feels like it’s bursting at the seams.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that faith isn't just for Sunday mornings. It’s for Tuesday afternoons in the carpool lane and 3 AM conversations after a late shift.

God’s Word is the light for your family’s path, even when that path is a little crowded.

The Myth of the "Perfect" Time

We often have this image in our heads of what "family devotions" should look like.

We imagine a quiet room, an open Bible, and children sitting perfectly still, soaking in every word. In reality, it usually looks more like sticky fingers, someone losing a shoe, and a parent who is checking the clock to make sure they aren’t late for work.

If you wait for the "perfect" time to talk about God, you might never start.

The good news? God designed faith to be shared in the middle of everyday life. In Deuteronomy 6:7, God instructs parents to teach His commands to their children: "Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."

Notice that this doesn't mention a classroom or a formal altar. It mentions sitting, walking, lying down, and getting up. It’s about the margins of your day.

Small Moments, Big Impact

Teaching your kids about faith doesn't require a degree or an hour-long lecture. It requires consistency in the small things.

Think about "The Memphis Scrub", not the physical location, but the idea of cleaning up the clutter in our lives to focus on what matters. When we simplify our approach to faith at home, we make it accessible for our kids.

1. The Morning Huddle If you have five minutes over cereal or while walking to the bus stop, share one verse. Don’t worry about a deep theological breakdown. Just read it and say, "This is what God says about how He loves us today." You can even find inspiration from The Boundless Daily: Day 1.

2. The Carpool Conversation When you’re "walking along the road" (or driving through traffic), use that time. Ask your kids, "Where did you see God working today?" or "Who can we pray for right now?" It turns a mundane chore into a spiritual exercise.

3. The Night Shift Connection For parents working irregular hours, you might not be there for bedtime or breakfast. Use technology to your advantage. Send a quick text to your spouse or child with a prayer, or leave a sticky note on the bathroom mirror with a verse. Your presence is felt through your spiritual leadership, even when you aren’t physically in the room.

Grounding Your Family in Truth

As a ministry of FA Memphis, we are committed to sound doctrine. We align with the 16 Fundamental Truths, which remind us that the Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice.

When you teach your kids, you are grounding them in two vital areas:

  • The Authority of Scripture: We believe the Bible is inspired by God. By reading it with your kids, you show them that there is a standard for truth that never changes, regardless of what they hear online or at school.

  • The Message of Salvation: Every small conversation is an opportunity to point back to Jesus. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, but that growth often starts with a parent’s simple testimony.

For the Busy Parent: A Simple 3-Step Routine

If you feel overwhelmed, try this "minimalist" approach to faith this week:

Step 1: Pick One Verse Choose one verse for the week. Post it on the fridge. Step 2: Connect it to an Action If the verse is about kindness, point out when you see your child being kind. If it’s about God’s provision, thank God together when a need is met. Step 3: Pray Together Once a Day It doesn’t have to be long. A 30-second prayer before school or before you head out for your shift is powerful. It shows your kids that you depend on God.

Leveraging Digital Tools

We live in a time where technology can either distract us from faith or help us multiply it. At Boundless Online Church, we want to help you use these tools for the glory of God.

If you can’t make it to a physical building because of your work schedule, you can always join our Sunday Live Worship. It’s a way to stay connected to a community of believers no matter where you are or what time your shift ends.

You can also explore our Ultimate Guide to AI and Faith. It’s designed to help parents and leaders navigate new technologies without losing sight of the timeless message of the Gospel.

You Are Not Alone

Parenting is hard. Doing it with a demanding schedule is even harder. There will be days when you feel like you’ve failed to be the "spiritual leader" you want to be.

On those days, remember that God’s grace is sufficient. He isn't looking for a perfect performance; He’s looking for a willing heart. Your effort to mention His name in the middle of a busy day speaks volumes to your children. It shows them that God isn't just a Sunday accessory, He is the foundation of your life.
