When Everything Around You Shifts
You just clocked in for another night shift. The machines hum. The fluorescent lights buzz. The world outside is asleep, but you're wide awake, keeping watch over whatever matters most in your corner of the world.
Or maybe you're in a place that doesn't feel safe. Where the ground beneath your feet, literally or figuratively, feels unstable. Where tomorrow isn't promised, and certainty is a luxury.
Or perhaps you're carrying the weight of caring for someone who's hurting. Long hours. Hard decisions. Little sleep.
Whatever brought you here today, you know this feeling:
Everything changes. Everything shifts.
Jobs change. Health changes. Relationships change. Governments rise and fall. Technology evolves faster than we can keep up.
But here's what I want you to know today:
There is something that never changes.
The Anchor That Holds
The first of the 16 Fundamental Truths that Assemblies of God churches hold dear is this:
The Scriptures are inspired by God.
That might sound like religious jargon, so let me put it plainly:
The Bible isn't just another book written by smart people with good ideas. It's God's Word: breathed out by Him, written down by human hands, preserved across thousands of years, and still speaking truth into our lives today.
And unlike everything else in this world, it doesn't expire. It doesn't get outdated. It doesn't need a software update or a revised edition to stay relevant.
Listen to what God Himself says:
"The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever." (Isaiah 40:8)
Everything fades. Everything falls apart eventually.
But God's Word? It stands.
Why This Matters When Life Feels Chaotic
You might be thinking, "That's nice, but what does that have to do with my shift tonight? Or the bills I can't pay? Or the diagnosis I just got?"
Everything.
Because when the world around you is spinning out of control, you need something solid to stand on. You need a foundation that doesn't crack under pressure.
Jesus said it this way: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." (Matthew 24:35)
Think about that.
The actual sky above you and the ground beneath your feet: those will one day be gone. But what Jesus said? That's eternal.
When you're working the graveyard shift and wondering if anyone sees you, God's Word says: "I have called you by name; you are mine." (Isaiah 43:1)
When you're in a dangerous place and fear is real, Scripture promises: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." (Psalm 23:4)
When you're exhausted and running on empty, Jesus invites you: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
These aren't just nice sentiments. They're promises backed by the unchanging character of God Himself.
The God Who Doesn't Change
Here's why God's Word never changes:
Because God never changes.
"I the Lord do not change." (Malachi 3:6)
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8)
The God who spoke creation into existence is the same God who's with you right now. The God who parted the Red Sea is the same God who can make a way when you see no way forward. The God who raised Jesus from the dead is the same God who can breathe life into your dead-end situation.
His character doesn't shift with trends, opinions, or circumstances. He's always good. Always loving. Always faithful. Always powerful.
And His Word reflects who He is.
The Word That Points to the Way
Here's what makes Scripture truly unique:
It all points to one person: Jesus.
From Genesis to Revelation, the whole story is about Him. Every promise finds its "yes" in Him. Every prophecy points to Him. Every truth leads us to Him.
Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)
Not a way. The way.
Not a truth among many. The truth.
Not one option for life. The life.
In a world full of competing voices and contradictory messages, this is the anchor:
Jesus is the living Word of God. And the written Word: the Bible: reveals Him to us.
When you read Scripture, you're not just learning principles or collecting information. You're encountering the Person who never changes, who loves you completely, and who offers you a relationship that death itself can't break.
That's the gospel: the good news.
You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to have it all together. You just have to come to Jesus.
He meets you where you are. He forgives what you've done. He offers you new life that starts now and lasts forever.
What This Looks Like in Real Life
So how do you actually apply this?
Start small.
You don't have to read 10 chapters a day or become a Bible scholar overnight. Just open it. Read a verse. A paragraph. A chapter if you can. Ask God to speak to you through it. He will.
"My word that goes out from my mouth... will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:11)
God's Word does something. It's active. It's alive. It comforts the hurting. It convicts the wandering. It guides the lost. It strengthens the weak.
It's not magic: it's better than magic. It's truth that transforms from the inside out.
Carry it with you.
Write a verse on a sticky note and put it on your dashboard or locker. Set a Bible verse as your phone's lock screen. Keep a pocket-sized New Testament in your bag. Let God's unchanging Word anchor you in the middle of your changing circumstances.
Let it reshape how you see yourself.
The world will tell you you're just a worker. Just a number. Just another body filling a shift. God's Word says you're made in His image. You're seen. You're known. You're loved.
You're worth so much to God that He sent His only Son to die for you. That's your true identity. And no job title, bank account, diagnosis, or circumstance can change it.

Embracing Change with Faith
Life is full of changes. Some are small, while others can feel monumental. Yet, through every twist and turn, we can find comfort in the unchanging nature of God.
Finding Stability in Uncertainty
When everything feels uncertain, we can lean on God's promises. They serve as a foundation, reminding us that we are not alone. Each promise in Scripture is a reminder of His faithfulness.
Building a Community of Support
Connecting with others can help us navigate life's changes. Sharing our experiences and struggles can lighten the load. We can encourage one another, reminding each other of God's love and grace.
The Power of Prayer
Prayer is a powerful tool. It connects us to God and allows us to express our fears, hopes, and needs. When we pray, we invite God into our situations. He listens, comforts, and guides us.
Living with Purpose
Every change can lead to new opportunities. Embrace them! Ask God to show you how to grow through your experiences. Trust that He has a plan for you, even when it feels unclear.
Conclusion: A Journey of Faith
As we navigate the changes in life, let's hold onto the truth that God is with us. He is our anchor in every storm. Together, we can face the future with hope, knowing that His love never fails.
