Daily Parent Devotional: Trusting God When You're Running on Empty (March 5)

It is 3:14 AM on a Thursday morning. Maybe you are sitting in a rocking chair with a teething toddler who just won’t settle. Maybe you are standing in a breakroom under buzzing fluorescent lights, staring at a vending machine because you’re halfway through a twelve-hour shift and your brain feels like it’s made of cotton.
Or maybe you just woke up and realized that before your feet even hit the floor, your "emotional gas tank" is already blinking red.
We’ve all been there. That feeling of running on empty isn’t just physical tiredness; it’s a soul-weariness that makes you wonder if you have anything left to give to your kids, your spouse, or your job.
If that’s you today, take a deep breath. You aren't failing. You’re human. And more importantly, you are exactly where God can do His best work.
The Myth of the Super-Parent
We live in a culture that celebrates the "hustle." We see social media posts of parents who seem to have it all together: perfectly packed lunches, clean houses, and endless energy. For those of us balancing parenting with unconventional schedules, shift work, or health challenges, those images can feel like a heavy weight.
But the Bible tells a different story about our limitations. In our Protestant tradition, and specifically within our Assemblies of God heritage, we believe that human weakness isn't a barrier to God; it’s an invitation for His power.
When you are running on empty, you stop relying on your own strength and start relying on His. This is the "Divine Exchange." We give Him our nothing, and He gives us His everything.

Scripture for the Weary: Isaiah 40:29-31
There is a passage of Scripture that serves as an anchor for anyone who feels like they’re about to snap.
"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:29-31, NIV)
Notice that the text says "even youths grow tired." Fatigue is universal. It doesn't mean you lack faith; it means you are a person living in a fallen world. But the promise is that when we "hope in the Lord": or as some translations say, "wait on the Lord": our strength is renewed.
For a parent or a shift worker, "waiting on the Lord" doesn't usually mean sitting in a quiet room for three hours of meditation. It means a moment-by-moment leaning. It’s a quiet prayer whispered over a diaper change: "Lord, I don't have the patience for this right now. Give me Yours."
The Power of the Holy Spirit in the Mundane
One of our core beliefs is the work of the Holy Spirit. We believe the Spirit isn't just for big church services or mountain-top experiences. The Holy Spirit is a Comforter and a Helper for the 2:00 PM slump and the 4:00 AM wake-up call.
When you feel like you are running on empty, ask the Holy Spirit to fill you. It’s not about an emotional high; it’s about a spiritual sustaining. It’s that unexplainable peace that keeps you calm when the milk spills for the third time today. It’s the endurance that gets you through the final hour of your shift when your legs are aching.
At Boundless Online Church, we know that many of you can’t make it to a physical building on Sunday mornings. Your "sanctuary" might be your car during a lunch break or your kitchen table while the kids nap. God is just as present there as He is in any cathedral.

Trusting God With Your "Not Enough"
Do you remember the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand? A little boy offered up five loaves and two fish. It wasn't nearly enough to feed the crowd. It was, quite literally, "running on empty" in terms of resources.
But Jesus didn't scold the boy for not having more. He took what was offered, blessed it, and multiplied it.
Your "not enough" is plenty for Jesus. If all you have to give your kids today is ten minutes of focused attention because you’re exhausted, give those ten minutes to God. If all you have to give your work is a prayerful attitude despite your fatigue, give it to Him.
Trust that He can multiply your meager energy to accomplish exactly what needs to be done today.
Practical Steps for the Empty Tank
How do we actually "trust" when we are exhausted? Here are a few practical ways to lean into God's strength today:
Honest Prayer: Don't feel like you have to use "churchy" language. Tell God, "I am exhausted and I’m frustrated." He already knows, but there is healing in the honesty.
Micro-Devotionals: If you can’t read a whole chapter of the Bible, read one verse. Let it sit in your mind. You can find many of these on our blog.
Digital Community: You weren't meant to do this alone. Even if you are isolated by your schedule or location, reach out. Join one of our online groups where you can connect with others who understand the struggle of the "nontraditional" life.
Accept Grace: If the house is messy or you had to order pizza for the third time this week, let it go. God’s grace is sufficient for your parenting, and it’s sufficient for your chores, too.
A Prayer for Your Day
Lord, I lift up every parent and worker reading this who feels like they are at the end of their rope. I thank You that You are the God who sees us in the dark hours and the busy afternoons. I ask that You would supernaturally renew their strength today. Where they feel empty, fill them with Your Spirit. Where they feel anxious, give them Your peace. Help them to trust that You are holding them, even when they feel like they are falling. In Jesus' name, Amen.
