Daily Parent Devotional: Seeing God's Hand in the Small Moments (March 7)

It is Saturday, March 7, 2026. If your house is anything like mine, the morning probably didn't start with a quiet cup of coffee and a leather-bound Bible in a sunlit nook. It probably started with a tug on your blanket, a question about where the blue socks went, or the distinct sound of a cereal bowl hitting the floor.

As parents and caregivers, we often wait for the "big" moments to encounter God. We look forward to the Sunday morning worship set, the summer retreat, or that rare hour of silence when everyone is finally asleep. We think that’s where the "spiritual" stuff happens.

But what if God is just as present in the blue socks and the spilled Cheerios?

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that faith isn't just a weekend event. It is a lived experience. We are a digital church serving those who cannot attend in person: whether you are working a weekend shift, caring for a newborn, or managing a chronic illness that keeps you home. We want to help you see that your home is a sanctuary and your daily routine is a liturgy.

The Burning Bush in Your Kitchen

In Exodus 3, Moses is out doing his job. He’s tending sheep. It’s mundane, dusty, and repetitive work. He wasn't at a mountaintop cathedral; he was just in the wilderness. Then, he sees a bush that is burning but not consumed.

The miracle wasn't just the fire; it was that Moses stopped to look.

Our lives are filled with "burning bushes": small moments where the divine breaks into the ordinary. For a parent, it might be the way your toddler stops to look at a ladybug. It might be the unexpected peace you feel while folding the third load of laundry. It might even be the realization of your own patience during a tantrum.

A mother finds peaceful reflection in her kitchen, seeing God's presence in daily chores.

When we recognize God in these moments, we are practicing what theologians call the "omnipresence" of God. This is a core part of our faith: God is everywhere at once. There is nowhere you can go: not even into the depths of a messy playroom: where He is not already there, waiting to meet you.

Why We Miss the Small Moments

Why is it so hard to see Him? Usually, it’s because we are moving too fast.

Parenting in the digital age is a sprint. We are managing schedules, worrying about digital safety, and trying to make sure our kids grow up with a solid foundation. In the rush to get to the "next thing," we bypass the "now thing."

We also tend to compartmentalize our lives. We have our "church life" and our "real life." But for the believer empowered by the Holy Spirit, there is no such distinction. Every moment is an opportunity for worship.

As an Assemblies of God ministry, we hold fast to the truth that the Holy Spirit is our Helper. Jesus promised in John 14:26 that the Helper would teach us all things. This includes teaching us how to see the world through His eyes. When we feel overwhelmed, we can pause and ask, "Holy Spirit, show me where You are in this room right now."

Finding Beauty in the Mundane

Let’s look at nature. Have you ever watched a child discover a dandelion? To us, it’s a weed that needs to be pulled. To them, it’s a golden treasure that turns into a "wish" when it goes to seed.

God designed the world with an incredible attention to detail. From the complexity of a DNA strand to the vastness of the stars, His handiwork is everywhere. If He cares enough to paint the petals of a flower that lasts only a day, how much more does He care about the small details of your family life?

A father and daughter admire a butterfly in nature, seeing God's hand in small moments.

In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us to look at the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. They don't toil or spin, yet God clothes them in beauty. This isn't just a nice poem; it’s a command to observe. When we take a moment to notice something beautiful with our children: a sunset, a cool breeze, or even the intricate pattern on a leaf: we are teaching them to recognize the Creator.

We are showing them that God isn't a distant figure in the clouds, but a Father who is intimately involved in His creation.

Practical Ways to Notice God Today

If you want to cultivate a "God-aware" home this week, try these simple steps:

  1. The Morning Breath Prayer: Before you even get out of bed, take one deep breath and say, "Lord, thank You for this day. Help me see You in the small things."

  2. The Nature "Stop": When you are walking from the car to the house, stop for 30 seconds. Look at the sky. Notice the trees. Ask your child what they see that God made.

  3. The Mealtime Gratitude: Instead of a generic prayer, ask everyone to name one small thing from their day that felt like a "gift from God." It could be a joke someone told or a good grade on a quiz.

  4. The Evening Reflection: As you tuck your kids in, remind them (and yourself) that God was with you both all day, even when you weren't thinking about Him.

These small shifts in perspective change the atmosphere of a home. They move us from a spirit of frantic busyness to a spirit of joyful awareness.

A Message for the Weary Parent

Maybe you're reading this and you don't feel "joyful." Maybe you feel exhausted. Maybe "small moments" feel more like "small burdens."

We want you to know that God sees you in that weariness, too. One of our 16 Fundamental Truths is that God provides divine healing and comfort. This isn't just for physical ailments; it’s for the soul. If you are struggling to find God in the chaos, it’s okay to cry out like the Psalmist: "Where does my help come from?" (Psalm 121:1).

The answer remains the same: "My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth."

He is the Maker of the heavens, and He is the Maker of your home. He isn't disappointed that you aren't doing a two-hour Bible study. He is invited into the two-minute prayer you whisper while washing dishes.

A tired mother prays by a baby's crib, finding strength and comfort in God's love.
