Developing a Family Tech Plan That Protects Your Faith

Let’s be honest for a second. Raising a family in 2026 feels a bit like trying to build a sandcastle while the tide is coming in.

Technology is everywhere. It’s in our pockets, on our wrists, and built into the very walls of our homes. While these tools give us incredible ways to connect, learn, and even share the Gospel, they also bring a whole new set of challenges to our spiritual lives.

If you’ve ever felt like your family’s devices are managing you: rather than the other way around: you aren’t alone.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that technology is a tool that can be used to multiply the message of Jesus. But like any tool, it requires a steady hand and a clear plan. Developing a Family Tech Plan isn't about being "anti-tech." It’s about being "pro-faith."

Why a Plan Matters: The Biblical Foundation

Before we get into the "how-to," we have to understand the "why."

As followers of Christ, we are called to a different standard. King David wrote in Psalm 101:3, "I will not look with approval on anything that is vile." In a world where "vile" content is often just one accidental click away, we have to be intentional about what we allow into our homes.

Our eyes and our minds are the gateways to our hearts. If we want our families to grow in sanctification: one of our core beliefs here: we have to protect those gateways. We are called to be in the world but not of it. That means our digital lives should look different than the world's.

Step 1: Establish Tech-Free Zones and Times

The easiest way to start reclaiming your home is to draw lines in the sand. You don’t need a degree in IT to do this; you just need a little consistency.

The Dining Table: Make this a sacred space. No phones, no tablets, no distractions. This is where we look each other in the eye and talk about our day. It’s where we see the image of God in one another.

The Bedroom: This is a big one. We strongly recommend that devices stay out of bedrooms overnight. Not only does this protect your kids from late-night rabbit holes, but it also helps everyone get better sleep.

The Morning Hour: What’s the first thing you do when you wake up? If it’s checking notifications, you might be letting the world set your agenda before God does. Try starting the day with The Boundless Daily before anyone picks up a smartphone.

Step 2: Discernment Over Restriction

We can't just block everything. Eventually, our kids will grow up and have full access to the internet. Our goal is to teach them digital discernment.

Instead of just saying "don't watch that," explain why we choose certain content. Use the filter of Philippians 4:8: Is it true? Is it noble? Is it pure? Is it lovely?

If a game or a show makes us feel angry, anxious, or pulls us away from our Christian values, it’s probably not something we should be inviting into our minds. We want to help our kids develop a "spiritual gut feeling" that tells them when something isn't right.

Step 3: Use the Tools Available

While we focus on the heart, we shouldn't ignore the practical tools. God has given us the wisdom to create safeguards.

  • Parental Controls: Most routers and devices have built-in settings to filter out explicit content. Use them!

  • Accountability Software: Consider tools that send a weekly report of browsing history. Knowing that someone else sees what we see is a powerful deterrent to temptation.

  • Shared Passwords: In a Christian home, there shouldn't be "digital secrets." Parents should have access to their children's devices at any time. This isn't about a lack of trust; it's about a surplus of protection.

We call this "Digital Safety 101." It’s actually a modern way of fulfilling the Great Commission by protecting the hearts of the next generation. You can read more about that perspective here.

Step 4: Model the Behavior

This is the hard part. Our kids are watching us. If we tell them to stay off social media but we spend three hours a night scrolling through feeds, they see the contradiction.

As parents, we have to lead by example. We should be the first ones to put our phones in the "charging station" at 8:00 PM. We should be the ones choosing to read the Word instead of binge-watching a show that doesn't honor God.

Remember, our goal is to show them that life with Jesus is more fulfilling than life with a screen.

Step 5: Pivot Tech Toward the Gospel

Technology isn't just something to be feared; it's something to be harnessed. Your Family Tech Plan should include ways to use devices for spiritual growth.

  • Family Devotionals: Use your tablets to follow along with Daily Parent Devotionals.

  • Worship Music: Create a family playlist of songs that point you toward Christ.

  • The Prayer Wall: When your family identifies a need, head over to the Boundless Prayer Wall and post a request together.

By doing this, you're teaching your family that technology is a servant of our faith, not the master of it.

Grace for the Journey

You’re going to mess up. Your kids are going to mess up. There will be days when the screen time limits go out the window and someone sees something they shouldn't have.

When that happens, don't react with shame or anger. React with grace. Use it as a teaching moment. Talk about why we need Jesus and why His ways are better than the world's ways.

The goal isn't a perfect record; it's a heart that is continually turning back to God.

Next Steps for Your Family

If you’re ready to start, here’s a simple plan for this week:

  1. Schedule a Family Meeting: Sit down together (without phones!) and talk about why you want to honor God with your tech.

  2. Pick One Boundary: Start small. Maybe it’s "No phones at dinner" or "Devices charge in the kitchen overnight."

  3. Pray Together: Ask the Holy Spirit for strength and wisdom as you navigate the digital world.

We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. If you need more resources or want to join a community of families doing the same thing, we’d love to have you. You can find our online groups here to stay connected.
