Review: Devotional | The Light of Truth

A Message from FA Memphis

Welcome to our daily devotional series. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that God’s Word is the foundation for every family’s faith journey. We are so glad you’ve joined us today as we explore the bedrock of our faith: the incredible truth that the Bible isn't just a book, it’s God’s very breath on a page.

Truth: The Inspired Scriptures

Scripture:

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." , 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Reflection

Think about the last time you received a letter or a text from someone you really love. Maybe it was a birthday card from Grandma or a note from a best friend. You probably didn't just glance at it and toss it aside; you read every word, didn't you? You could almost hear their voice as you read it.

The Bible is exactly like that. It’s a letter from our Heavenly Father, but it has a special "superpower." The Apostle Paul tells us it is "God-breathed." This doesn't mean God picked up a pen and wrote on paper like we do. It means He breathed His thoughts, His heart, and His truth into the people who wrote it down.

Imagine blowing bubbles. Your breath is what makes the bubble grow and float. Without your breath, it’s just soapy water. Without God’s breath, the Bible would just be a book of history. But because He breathed into it, it is alive! It guides us when we are lost, comforts us when we are sad, and shows us the right path when we aren't sure which way to turn. When we read it together as a family, we aren't just looking at old stories; we are listening to God’s voice guiding us toward everything that is good and true.

Action Today, let’s make God’s Word visible! Pick a "Verse of the Day" (maybe 2 Timothy 3:16!) and write it on a sticky note. Place it on your bathroom mirror, the refrigerator, or even the dashboard of the car. Every time someone in the family sees it, take a second to say, "Thank You, God, for Your Word."

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for the gift of the Bible. Thank You for speaking to us and not leaving us to figure out life on our own. Help us to hide Your truths in our hearts like hidden treasure. Teach us to follow Your path every single day. Amen.

Family Question

If you could ask God a question about a story in the Bible, which one would it be? (Parents, share yours too!)

Kids Story: Leo and the Whispering Map

Leo was an explorer. At least, that’s what he told his dog, Barnaby, every morning. With a cardboard tube for a telescope and a backpack full of crackers, Leo was ready for anything. But today, they were in the "Great Backyard Woods," and for the first time, Leo felt a little bit lost.

The tall grass tickled his knees, and the oak trees seemed to be whispering to each other. Leo looked at his map, a drawing he’d made with crayons. It had a big "X" for the swing set, but he couldn't see the swing set anywhere.

"Barnaby, I think our map is broken," Leo sighed, sitting on a mossy log.

Suddenly, Leo’s dad stepped through the bushes. He wasn't lost at all. He held a small, leather-bound book in his hand. "Hey there, explorer. Need a hand?"

"My map doesn't work, Dad," Leo said. "I don't know which way is home."

Dad sat down next to him. "You know, sometimes we feel lost in life too. Not just in the woods, but in how we should act or how we should treat people. That’s why God gave us a map that never breaks."

He opened his Bible. "This book is like a lamp for our feet. It’s filled with God’s own words. When we don't know what to do, we look here."

Dad read a verse about God being a shepherd who leads us to still waters. As he spoke, Leo felt his tummy stop fluttering. The words felt warm, like a hug.

"Is it like a magic map?" Leo asked.

"Better," Dad smiled. "It’s a living map. It tells us that we are loved, that we are never alone, and that there is always a way back to the Father."

Leo stood up, feeling brave again. He didn't need his crayon map anymore. He followed his dad, knowing that as long as they had the "Big Map," they would always find their way home.

The Chronicles of Aletheia: Chapter 1

The Lantern in the Attic

The dust motes danced in the shafts of afternoon sunlight as Maya pushed open the heavy wooden door to her grandfather’s attic. She wasn't supposed to be up here, but curiosity was a powerful thing.

Tucked behind a stack of old quilts was a chest marked with a symbol she’d never seen before: a flame carved into silver. When she lifted the lid, there was no gold or jewels.

Instead, there was a single, old-fashioned lantern and a thick book wrapped in linen.

As Maya’s fingers touched the cover of the book, the lantern flickered to life. It didn't burn with oil; it glowed with a soft, blue light that smelled like rain and cedar.

"The Book of Truth," Maya whispered, reading the gold-leaf letters on the spine.

Suddenly, the floorboards beneath her seemed to ripple like water. The walls of the attic faded, and the smell of cedar grew stronger. She wasn't in the attic anymore. She was standing at the edge of a forest where the leaves were the color of sapphires.

In her hand, the book began to hum. It felt warm: alive. A voice, as clear as a bell, echoed in her mind: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet.”

Maya gripped the lantern tight. She didn't know where she was, but she knew the book in her hand held the secrets of this new world. It was time to start her journey.

Tips for Raising Word-Centered Kids

Helping children love the Bible doesn't have to be a struggle! Here are a few ways to make it natural and fun:

  1. Model the Love: Kids do what they see. Let them catch you reading your Bible. If they see that you value it, they will be curious about why.

  2. Use Sensory Bibles: For younger kids, use Bibles with bright pictures or "seek and find" elements. For older kids, let them choose a Bible in a translation they can easily read (like the NLT or ICB).

  3. The "One Verse" Rule: Don't feel like you have to read a whole chapter at dinner. Pick one verse and talk about what it means for ten minutes. Quality over quantity!

  4. Connect it to Life: When your child is scared, read a verse about peace. When they are happy, read a verse about praise. Show them that the Bible has an answer for their real-life feelings.

Hands-On Faith: The "God-Breathed" Bubble Experiment

Items Needed:

  • A bowl of water

  • Dish soap

  • A straw

  • A Bible

The Activity:

  1. Mix a little dish soap into the bowl of water.

  2. Have your child try to make bubbles just by swirling their finger. (It doesn't work well!)

  3. Now, have them use the straw to gently blow into the water. Watch the bubbles pile up!

  4. The Spiritual Connection: Read 2 Timothy 3:16. Explain that just like the bubbles needed our breath to form and grow, the Bible needed God’s "breath" to become the powerful, living book it is today. Without His breath, it’s just words. With His breath, it’s life!

Heart of the Story: Helping children recognize that the Bible is the ultimate authority and a gift from a loving Father.

Theological Root: AG Fundamental Truth #1: The Scriptures Inspired.

Ages 3–6:

  • What is the name of God’s special book?

  • Did you know God "breathed" life into the stories in the Bible?

  • How does it feel to know God wrote a letter just for you?

Ages 7–9:

  • In the story about Leo, why did the Bible work better than his hand-drawn map?

  • What does it mean that the Bible is "useful for teaching and training"?

  • How can we use the Bible when we are feeling sad or angry?

Ages 10–12:

  • Paul says the Bible "equips" us. What do you think a "servant of God" needs to be equipped for today?

  • Why is it important to believe the Bible is inspired by God and not just written by men?

  • How can we make sure we are listening to God’s "breath" instead of just the noise of the world?

Prayer Closer:

"Lord, help our family to be people of the Book. Let Your Word be the final say in our home. Guide our steps and light our path. Amen."
