When someone you love is sick, you pray.
That's instinct. That's faith.
But how we pray: and what we believe about healing: matters deeply. At Boundless Online Church, we anchor our understanding of divine healing in the Assemblies of God's 16 Fundamental Truths, specifically Truth #12: Divine Healing.
This isn't fringe theology. It's one of the four Cardinal Doctrines of the Assemblies of God: right alongside salvation, baptism in the Holy Spirit, and Christ's return. That means healing is central to the gospel, not a sidebar.
But it also means we approach it with both faith and wisdom.
Let me walk you through what that looks like in real life.

What Is Divine Healing?
Divine healing is God's direct intervention through the Holy Spirit to restore health.
It's not mind-over-matter. It's not wishful thinking. And it's not a magic formula.
It's God's power, applied by God's grace, in response to faith-filled prayer.
The Assemblies of God affirms that healing was provided for in the atonement. Jesus didn't just die for our sins: He bore our sicknesses too (Isaiah 53:4-5, Matthew 8:16-17). That means physical healing is a privilege available to every believer, not just a select few.
Here's what that means practically:
Healing comes through faith in God, not through superstition, ritual alone, or human manipulation.
God is the sole source of healing: making it fundamentally different from medicine (which God permits) or occult practices (which He forbids).
We pray in Jesus' name, trusting the Holy Spirit's power, not our own eloquence or effort.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe God heals today. We've seen it. We pray for it. And we do so within a community that supports, anoints, and intercedes together.
The Biblical Foundation: James 5:14-16
If you want to know how to pray for healing in an Assemblies of God context, start with James 5:14-16.
"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up."
This passage gives us the framework. James outlines five key elements that shape how we pray:
1. Corporate Prayer
Healing happens in community. Call the elders. Gather believers. Don't try to carry this alone.
2. Anointing with Oil
Anointing is a sign of the Holy Spirit's presence: an act of faith, not magic. It's symbolic, yes, but deeply meaningful.
3. Calling on the Lord's Name
We pray to Jesus. We invoke His authority. Healing flows from relationship, not formula.
4. Faith
This is confident trust in God's character and power. Faith doesn't demand; it asks and believes God is able.
5. Confession of Sin (When Needed)
Sometimes sickness is connected to unconfessed sin. James says, "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed." Spiritual health and physical health are intertwined.
At Boundless Online Church, we've built prayer rhythms around these principles. Whether you're joining us online, you'll find a community ready to pray with you, not just for you.

Faith AND Wisdom: A Balanced Approach
Here's where theology meets real life.
The Assemblies of God affirms that God permits: and even provides: medical help.
Doctors, medicine, surgery, therapy: all of these are tools God has given humanity. Using them doesn't mean you lack faith. It means you're using all the means God has provided while still trusting Him as the ultimate Healer.
Think of it this way:
Faith says, "God, I believe You can heal."
Wisdom says, "God, I'll also see the doctor You've trained."
Both are true. Both honor God.
We don't pit faith against medicine. We hold both in tension, always keeping God as the primary source of hope and healing. Prayer comes first. Anointing matters. And if God also uses a surgeon's skill or a pharmacist's prescription, we thank Him for that too.
This is especially important when dealing with chronic illness, mental health struggles, or conditions that require ongoing treatment. God doesn't condemn you for taking medication. He invites you to trust Him through the process.
How to Pray for Healing: Practical Steps
So what does this look like when you're sitting in a hospital room, standing beside a friend's bed, or bowing your head over your own pain?
Here's a simple guide rooted in Assemblies of God teaching and practice:
Step 1: Call for Prayer
Don't wait. Reach out to your church leaders, small group, or trusted believers.

Step 2: Anoint with Oil
If possible, have an elder or pastor anoint with oil in Jesus' name. This is a sacred moment: not superstition, but a tangible act of faith.
Step 3: Pray in Faith
Speak simply. Speak boldly. Acknowledge God's power. Ask for healing. Trust His timing.
Step 4: Confess and Receive
If the Holy Spirit brings something to mind: confess it. Receive forgiveness. Let go of any spiritual weight that might hinder healing.
Step 5: Continue in Community
Healing doesn't always happen instantly. Keep praying. Keep showing up. Keep believing. The church's role is to provide sustained prayer, care, and encouragement, not to abandon hope when the answer is delayed.

When Healing Doesn't Come (Yet)
Let's be honest: not everyone we pray for is healed immediately.
That's hard. It's painful. And it raises questions we don't always have neat answers for.
But here's what we do know from Assemblies of God theology:
God is still good.
God is still powerful.
God's timing is not always our timing.
Our faith is in Him, not in a guaranteed outcome.
When healing is delayed or withheld, we keep praying. We keep trusting. We hold each other up in faith. And we remember that ultimate healing: resurrection and eternal life: is promised to every believer (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).
At Boundless Online Church, we walk with people through both miracles and mystery. We celebrate when God heals. And we grieve, pray, and hope when He asks us to wait.
Testimonies Matter
When God does heal, we tell the story.
Why? Because testimonies glorify God and build faith in the community.
In our community, we've seen chronic pain ease after prayer. We've watched situations shift. We've heard doctors say, "We can't explain this."
These aren't fairy tales. They're reminders that God is alive, active, and still in the healing business.
If God has healed you: physically, emotionally, spiritually: share it. Your story might be the spark someone else needs to believe again.
