Evergreen Faith : Called to Serve - Understanding the Ministry

A Message from FA Memphis

Understanding the ministry is central to Assemblies of God doctrine. AG Truth #7 outlines a divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry provided by Christ for four specific purposes: global evangelization, corporate worship, edifying the body of Christ, and compassionate service. This divine mandate ensures that the Church remains focused on its mission to reach the lost, honor God, and grow believers into the image of Jesus Christ.

Bible Verses

Mark 16:15-20 "He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation...'"

John 4:23-24 "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks."

Ephesians 4:11-16 "So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up..."

James 1:27 "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."

Explanation

When we hear the word "ministry," many of us immediately picture a person standing behind a wooden pulpit in a suit or a robe. We think of Sunday mornings, organ music, or perhaps a large stage with bright lights. But at Boundless Online Church, we know that the ministry is something much deeper and more expansive than a physical location or a specific job title.

According to the Assemblies of God Fundamental Truth #7, the ministry is "divinely called and scripturally ordained." This means that leadership in the church isn't just a career choice: it’s a response to a direct invitation from God. This calling isn't for the benefit of the leader; it is a gift from Christ to the Church to ensure that God’s work continues until He returns.

The Fourfold Purpose of the Ministry

The ministry isn't just about "keeping the lights on." It has four very specific goals that keep the Church healthy and moving forward.

1. Evangelizing the World The first priority of the ministry is to reach people who don't know Jesus yet. Jesus was very clear about this: we are to go into all the world. In the 21st century, "all the world" includes the digital world. Whether you are a shift worker checking your phone at 3 AM or someone living in a place where a physical church isn't safe to visit, the ministry exists to bring the Gospel to you.

We believe in the power of the digital Great Commission. The ministry's job is to lead the way in sharing the Good News, making sure that every person has a chance to hear about the hope of Christ.

2. A Channel for Worship Ministry leaders are called to lead the community in worship. But worship is more than just singing songs. It is a posture of the heart. The ministry helps create an environment: whether in a room or in a digital community: where people can connect with God in Spirit and in Truth. Worship is our primary response to who God is, and the ministry keeps that fire burning.

3. Building a Body of Saints The third purpose is edification: which is just a fancy way of saying "building up." The ministry is there to help you grow. We aren't meant to stay "spiritual babies" forever. We are called to be perfected in the image of Jesus. This happens through teaching, discipleship, and the gifts of the Spirit.

The ministry equips you to do the work of God in your own life. It provides the roadmap for your journey of faith. If you're looking for a way to dive deeper into this growth, our Bible Study Club is a great place to start.

4. Meeting Human Needs Finally, the ministry is called to demonstrate God’s love through acts of compassion. This is the hands and feet of the Gospel. Whether it is praying for the sick, helping the poor, or standing up for the vulnerable, the ministry ensures that the Church doesn't just talk about love: it shows it.

We see this every day through our World Ministries and the many volunteers who give their time to serve others.

A Calling for All

While Truth #7 specifically addresses the "ordained ministry": those called to lead and shepherd: it also reminds us that we are all part of the body of Christ. The leaders are there to "equip the saints" (that’s you!) for the work of service.

At Boundless Online Church, we want to help you find your place in this mission. Maybe you feel called to help with digital video and photo training to spread the Word, or perhaps you feel a pull toward our volunteers and leaders group.

The ministry is a gift. It provides the structure, the leadership, and the spiritual oversight that allows us to grow "until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:13).

Why This Matters for You

If you’ve ever felt like your faith was just a solo journey, Truth #7 is a reminder that you are part of something much bigger. God has placed leaders in your life to support you, teach you, and pray for you. And if you feel God tugging at your heart to serve, don't ignore it. That "divine call" can happen at a keyboard just as easily as it can at an altar.

We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. Whether you are brand new to faith or have been walking with God for decades, understanding that the ministry is a provision from Christ for your benefit can change how you view the Church.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the ministry. Thank You for calling men and women to lead, teach, and serve Your people. I pray for our leaders today: give them wisdom, strength, and a clear vision for the mission You have set before them. I also ask that You show me my part in Your plan. Help me to grow in maturity and to find ways to serve others with the love of Jesus. May our lives together bring glory to Your name and draw others to You. Amen.
