Evergreen Faith : Does God Still Heal People Today?

Yes, divine healing is a central promise of the Gospel and remains fully available to every believer today. God’s nature as a Healer is unchanging, and through the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ on the cross, provision was made for the restoration of the whole person, body, soul, and spirit. As a core doctrine of the Assemblies of God, we believe that the same Holy Spirit who performed miracles in the New Testament continues to bring healing and wholeness to those who seek Him in faith.

Bible Verses on Divine Healing

"But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." , Isaiah 53:5

"When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.'" , Matthew 8:16-17

Understanding God’s Heart for Your Wholeness

When we talk about divine healing, it isn’t just a "bonus" feature of the Christian life. It is actually woven into the very fabric of what Jesus did for us. If you’ve ever wondered if God cares about your physical pain, your mental struggles, or your spiritual exhaustion, the answer is a resounding yes.

The Provision of the Gospel

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we hold to the "16 Fundamental Truths," and one of those is that divine healing is provided for all believers in the atonement (the work Jesus did on the cross).

Think about that for a second. When Jesus went to the cross, He didn't just carry the weight of our sins. He also carried our infirmities. Isaiah 53 tells us that "by His stripes, we are healed." This means that healing is a "paid-for" privilege of being a child of God. It’s a gift that stems from His mercy and His desire to see His creation restored.

Three Dimensions of Healing

When we pray for healing, it’s helpful to realize that God often works in layers. He is a master of the "deep clean" of the human heart and body.

1. Physical Healing This is the most visible form. We see it in the Gospels when Jesus opened blind eyes, made the lame walk, and cured diseases. We believe that God still does this today. Whether it’s a sudden miracle or a gradual recovery through the help of medical professionals (whom God also uses!), physical restoration is part of His promise.

2. Emotional and Mental Healing Our world is heavy right now. Anxiety, depression, and trauma can feel just as debilitating as a physical illness. Jesus is called the Prince of Peace for a reason. He can heal the wounds of the past, quiet the noise of the mind, and restore joy to a broken heart. If you are struggling with internal battles, know that God’s healing power extends to your thoughts and emotions.

3. Spiritual Healing This is the most important dimension. It’s the restoration of our relationship with God. When we are forgiven and brought into God’s family, our spirits are made alive. This spiritual wholeness provides the foundation for everything else.

The Role of Faith and the Holy Spirit

You might be asking, "How do I receive this?"

Faith is the key, but don't let that intimidate you. Faith isn't about how hard you can "will" something to happen. It’s simply about trust. It’s looking at God’s Word and saying, "I believe You are who You say You are, and I trust You with my life."

Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. The more we lean into the promises found in Scripture, the more our confidence in God’s nature grows. The Holy Spirit is the one who does the heavy lifting. He is the "Executive of the Godhead" on earth today, applying the work of Jesus to our lives. When we pray in faith, we are inviting the Spirit to move in our situation.

Practical Steps for Your Journey

• Immerse yourself in the Word. Read the stories of Jesus healing people in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). Remind yourself that He hasn't changed.

• Join a community. Healing often happens in the context of fellowship. Check out our Bible Study Club to connect with others who can stand in the gap with you.

• Ask for prayer. There is power when two or more agree in prayer. Don't carry the burden alone.

• Keep a grateful heart. Even in the middle of a struggle, find small things to thank God for. Gratitude opens the door for peace.

Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are Jehovah Rapha: the Lord who heals. I lift up the person reading this right now. You know exactly where they hurt, whether it's in their body, their mind, or their spirit. I ask that Your Holy Spirit would rest upon them right now.
