Evergreen Faith : Spiritual Warfare for Regular People: Standing Firm Without Fear

A Message from FA Memphis

Can a regular person handle spiritual warfare without being an expert? Absolutely. Spiritual warfare is simply the recognition that there is a spiritual dimension to our daily struggles, and we stand firm by relying on the authority of Jesus rather than our own strength. By using prayer, Scripture, and the "Armor of God," you can replace fear with peace and move from a place of victimhood to victory.

Spiritual warfare for regular people is the practice of resisting negative spiritual influences through prayer, Scripture, and faith in Jesus Christ. Instead of living in fear, believers can stand firm by recognizing spiritual attacks on their thoughts and emotions and utilizing the "Armor of God." It is not a battle of strength, but a battle of surrender to God’s authority and protection.

Bible Verses to Carry With You

Ephesians 6:11 (NIV) "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes."

James 4:7 (NIV) "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

2 Corinthians 10:4 (NIV) "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds."

1 John 4:4 (NIV) "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."

Understanding the Battle in the Everyday

When we hear the term "spiritual warfare," our minds often jump to scenes from intense movies or ancient legends. But for most of us, the battle doesn't look like a Hollywood production. It looks like a sudden, overwhelming wave of anxiety when everything was going fine. It looks like a persistent thought that tells you you’re a failure, or a sudden wedge of division that comes between you and the people you love.

At Boundless Online Church, we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and part of that growth is realizing that you aren't just "having a bad day." Sometimes, there is a spiritual influence trying to pull you away from the peace that God has promised you.

The good news? You don’t need a special degree or a title to stand your ground. If you are a follower of Jesus, you already have the authority of His name. Spiritual warfare is for regular people because God uses regular people to show His extraordinary power.

Recognizing the Attack

The first step in standing firm is knowing when you’re actually in a fight. It’s easy to blame our boss, our spouse, or our own "bad personality" for our struggles. While we are responsible for our actions, the Bible tells us that our real struggle isn't against flesh and blood.

If you feel a sudden, heavy sense of discouragement that doesn't seem to have a logical source, or if you find yourself unable to pray or read the Bible because of a strange "fog" in your mind, take a breath. Don't panic. Fear is the enemy’s primary tool, but it has no power over the truth.

We trust what the Bible says about our identity and our protection. If you’ve ever wondered why we put so much weight on these ancient words, take a look at our deep dive on why we trust the Bible. It’s our manual for the battlefield.

The Tools of a Regular Person

You don’t need a sword or a shield made of iron. You have something much better. Paul, one of the early church leaders, described the "Armor of God" in a way that anyone can understand:

  1. Truth: Remind yourself of what is actually true. The enemy uses lies (like "God is mad at you"). The truth is that you are loved and forgiven.

  2. Righteousness: This isn't about being perfect. It’s about knowing that Jesus has made you right with God. You are covered by His goodness, not your own performance.

  3. Peace: Even in the middle of a mess, you can have a "readiness" that comes from the Gospel. You are standing on solid ground.

  4. Faith: Think of this as your shield. When those "darts" of doubt and fear come flying at you, your trust in God’s character stops them cold.

  5. Salvation: Protect your mind with the knowledge that you are saved. Your future is secure.

  6. The Word of God: This is your only offensive weapon. When Jesus was tempted in the desert, He didn't argue; He quoted Scripture. There is power in the Word.

Taking Your Thoughts Captive

One of the most practical ways regular people engage in spiritual warfare is through "thought management." Have you ever had a thought that felt like it wasn't yours? Something dark, or incredibly fearful?

The Bible tells us to "take every thought captive to obey Christ." This means when a thought enters your mind that doesn't align with God’s love for you, you don't have to let it stay. You can say, "No, that’s not true. God hasn't given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind."

This is a mental and spiritual habit. It’s like weeding a garden. You don't do it once and expect it to stay clean forever; you check in daily. You can even wear reminders of your faith to keep your mind focused. Many in our community find that wearing a simple Christian hat or beanie or keeping a faith-inspired mug on their desk helps them stay grounded in the truth throughout a busy workday.

The Power of the Holy Spirit

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe deeply in the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. You weren't meant to fight these battles on your own "willpower." Willpower runs out. The Holy Spirit’s power does not.

When you feel overwhelmed, it is perfectly okay to say, "Holy Spirit, I can't do this. I need your strength right now." There is immense power in the name of Jesus. Just speaking His name in a moment of distress can shift the atmosphere of a room. It isn't a magic charm; it's a recognition of who is actually in charge.

You Are Not Alone

The enemy loves to isolate people. He wants you to think you’re the only one struggling with these fears or these "spiritual" heavy feelings. But you belong to a global family of believers.

Standing firm is easier when you’re standing with others. Whether you’re joining us for a live service on the weekend or just browsing our books and resources to strengthen your walk, remember that you are part of the Body of Christ.

If you're feeling stuck, don't stay silent. Reach out. We have people ready to pray with you and for you. Sometimes, just having someone else agree with you in prayer breaks the heavy feeling you’ve been carrying.

A Simple Prayer for Peace and Strength

Lord, thank You that I don’t have to fight in my own strength. I admit that sometimes I feel afraid or overwhelmed by the things I can’t see. Right now, I choose to put on Your armor. I take up the shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit, which is Your Word. I ask for Your Holy Spirit to fill me with peace and clarity. Help me to recognize the lies of the enemy and to replace them with Your truth. I stand firm in the victory that Jesus has already won for me. Amen.
