Evergreen Faith : What Does the Bible Say About Dealing with Anxiety?

A Message from FA Memphis

The Bible says to cast all your anxieties on God because He cares for you, and to replace worry with prayer and thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6-7). Scripture teaches that while anxiety is a common human experience, we are not meant to carry it alone. By bringing our burdens to Jesus, we receive a supernatural peace that guards our hearts and minds, regardless of our circumstances.

The Biblical Foundation for Peace

When we feel the weight of the world on our shoulders, it is easy to feel isolated. However, God’s Word provides a roadmap for navigating these turbulent emotions. Dealing with anxiety isn’t about pretending everything is fine; it’s about acknowledging our struggles and inviting God into the middle of them.

Key Bible Verses on Anxiety

  • Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV): "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

  • 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV): "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

  • Matthew 6:34 (NIV): "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

  • Isaiah 41:10 (NIV): "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

  • 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV): "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."

  • Psalm 56:3 (NIV): "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you."

Understanding the "Exchange" of Anxiety

In the book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul, writing from a prison cell, gives us a profound strategy for peace. He describes a spiritual exchange. We give God our "prayer and petition with thanksgiving," and in return, God gives us His peace.

This peace is described as "transcending all understanding." This means it doesn’t always make sense. You can have peace even when the bank account is low, even when a relationship is strained, or even when the news is frightening. This is because this peace isn't based on your situation; it’s based on God’s character.

Casting Your Burdens

The language Peter uses in 1 Peter 5:7 is very intentional. To "cast" something means to throw it. Imagine you are hiking with a backpack full of heavy stones. If you try to carry it the whole way, you will eventually collapse. Casting your anxiety is the act of taking that backpack off and handing it to Jesus.

Why can we do this? Because "He cares for you." This is a fundamental truth in the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe in a personal God who is deeply involved in the details of our lives. He isn’t a distant observer; He is a loving Father who wants to carry the heavy lifting for us.

The Power of a Sound Mind

In 2 Timothy 1:7, we are reminded that fear does not come from God. When anxiety grips us, it often feels like our thoughts are spinning out of control. But the Holy Spirit provides us with "power, love, and a sound mind."

A sound mind is one that is disciplined and focused on the truth of Scripture rather than the "what-ifs" of the future. This is part of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, it provides us with a supernatural strength to overcome the mental battles we face daily. When we feel overwhelmed, we can ask the Spirit to settle our thoughts and remind us of who we are in Christ.

Practical Steps to Handle Worry

Knowing what the Bible says is the first step; applying it is where the transformation happens. Here are a few ways to put these biblical principles into practice:

1. The Gratitude Filter

Philippians 4:6 mentions "with thanksgiving." It is incredibly difficult for anxiety and gratitude to occupy the same space in your mind at the same time. When you start to feel anxious, try listing five things you are thankful for. This shifts your focus from what you lack or fear to what God has already provided.

2. Live in the "Now"

Jesus taught in Matthew 6 that we shouldn't worry about tomorrow. Most of our anxiety lives in a future that hasn't happened yet. God provides "daily bread," not "monthly shipments." He gives us the grace we need for today. If you are struggling, focus only on the next hour, or the next ten minutes, trusting that God will meet you in the next moment too. For those navigating difficult seasons, like caregivers, finding rest is essential. You can find more on this in our caregiver’s prayer resource.

3. Seek Community

You weren't meant to carry anxiety alone. Whether you are in Memphis or halfway across the world, being part of a faith community matters. Sharing your burdens with others helps "lighten the load." Is There Hope When Life Feels Overwhelming?

Sometimes, the anxiety we feel is tied to the environment around us. We see the struggles in our cities and wonder if things will ever get better. At Boundless Online Church, we believe there is always hope. Even when things look dark, God is working. We’ve explored this deeply in our post about hope for Memphis, and the same principles apply to wherever you are standing right now.

Anxiety often tries to tell us that the story is over or that the worst-case scenario is inevitable. But the Bible tells a different story, one of redemption, strength, and ultimate victory through Jesus Christ.

A Prayer for Peace

Lord, right now I bring my anxious thoughts to You. I admit that I’ve been trying to carry these burdens on my own, and I’m tired. I choose to "cast" these worries, my finances, my family, my health, and my future, into Your capable hands. Thank You for caring for me. I ask for Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard my heart and my mind. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and give me a sound mind. I trust You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
