Evergreen Faith: What is the 'Blessed Hope' and Why Should You Be Excited?

A high-quality 16:9 landscape image showing believers looking toward a radiant horizon with clear takeaways about the Blessed Hope and the return of Jesus Christ.

The 'Blessed Hope' is the biblical promise of the resurrection of those who have died in Christ and the transformation of living believers to meet the Lord in the air. It is the confident, joyful expectation of Jesus Christ’s imminent return, providing every believer with the assurance of eternal life, ultimate victory over death, and a future free from sin and suffering.

The 'Blessed Hope' is a cornerstone of the Christian faith and specifically Truth #13 of the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths. It is the belief that Jesus is coming back for His people, an event often referred to as the Rapture. Rather than being a source of fear or confusion, this doctrine is designed to be a "blessed" or happy assurance. It serves as a powerful motivator for godly living and a constant source of comfort in a world that often feels chaotic.

Bible Verses to Hold On To

  • Titus 2:13: "...while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ."

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17: "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever."

  • 1 Corinthians 15:51-52: "Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed: in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed."

  • John 14:3: "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."

Understanding the 'Blessed' in the Hope

When we hear the word "hope" today, we usually mean it as a wish.

"I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow."

"I hope my team wins the game."

In the Bible, the word "hope" (the Greek word elpis) means something entirely different. It means a confident, settled expectation. It isn't a "maybe"; it’s a "definitely."

And why is it called "blessed"? Because this hope brings happiness and delight. It is the "happy expectation." When you know that the story ends in victory, you can handle a few difficult chapters in the middle.

At Boundless Online Church, we want to help you shift your perspective from the stresses of today to the promises of eternity. If you're wondering about the foundations of this belief, you might find our look at the evidence for faith a great place to start.

Why Should You Be Excited?

It’s easy to look at the news and feel heavy. There is so much division, sickness, and pain. But the Blessed Hope tells us that this world, in its current broken state, is not our final destination.

Here are a few reasons to get excited about the return of Jesus:

1. The Victory Over Death

The most significant sting in the human experience is death. We all lose people we love. But the Blessed Hope promises a reunion. 1 Thessalonians tells us that those who have "fallen asleep" in Christ will rise. Death doesn't get the last word: Jesus does.

2. Our New Bodies

Let’s be honest: life is physically hard. We deal with chronic pain, aging, and illness. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians that we will be "changed." We will trade these perishable bodies for imperishable ones. No more pain, no more exhaustion, no more limitations.

3. To Be Where He Is

The greatest part of the Blessed Hope isn't the golden streets or the absence of pain: it’s Jesus. He promised in John 14 that He was going to prepare a place for us so that we could be where He is. We were created for a relationship with God, and the Blessed Hope is the moment that relationship becomes face-to-face.

How This Hope Changes Your "Today"

You might think, "That sounds great for the future, but what about right now?"

The Blessed Hope isn't just a "pie in the sky" idea. It’s meant to change the way you live this afternoon.

It gives you endurance. When you know that your trials are transient compared to eternal glory, you gain a "calm power." You can endure a difficult job, a health struggle, or a season of loneliness because you know it is temporary.

It motivates you toward holiness. When we expect a guest to arrive at our home, we clean up. We get ready. In the same way, expecting Jesus to return any moment encourages us to live lives that reflect His love and character. It helps us prioritize what really matters: people, love, and the Gospel.

It fuels our mission. If we believe Jesus is coming back, we want as many people as possible to know Him! This hope is what drives us to reach out, to serve, and to share the good news. If you’re looking for a community to grow with as you share this message, consider joining our Bible Study Club.

A Hope for Everyone

Maybe you feel like you’ve messed up too much to be part of this "Blessed Hope." Maybe you feel weighed down by shame.

Let me tell you: this hope is a gift. It isn't earned by being perfect; it’s received by trusting in what Jesus has already done. If you are struggling with your past, I encourage you to read about overcoming shame with God's grace.

The return of Christ is a message of reconciliation. It’s God saying, "I am coming to make all things new." That includes you.

Living with Expectation

Through Boundless Online Church, we emphasize Spirit-empowered living. We believe that the same Holy Spirit who will raise us up at the last trumpet is available to empower us right now.

This is what we call "Evergreen Faith." It’s a faith that stays green and vibrant, even when the environment around it is dry. The secret to that vibrancy is keeping our eyes on the horizon, waiting for our King.

Are you excited? You should be! The best is yet to come.

If you're new to these concepts and have questions, we’d love to walk with you. You can always drop by our I'm New Q&A Welcome Center to chat with others who are on the same journey.

A Prayer for Hope

Lord, thank You for the promise of Your return. When the world feels heavy and my heart feels tired, remind me of the Blessed Hope. Thank You that death is defeated and that You are preparing a place for me. Help me to live today with the joy and confidence of someone who knows the end of the story. Let Your hope purifiy my heart and give me the strength to share Your love with everyone I meet. Amen.
